@colbybartlett technically, a panther isnt a real animal, its just a name that can be used for animals like leopards, jaguars, and cougars/mountain lions/pumas. so, technically, a panther DOES exist, and it DOESNT exist
Panthera is the Genus that includes lions, leopards, tigers and jaguars. In South America panther is used to describe the Jaguar, as seen here, while in North America panther has been erroneously used to describe the mountain lion or cougar. Black panther is used to describe the rare melanism of the skin, the opposite of albino, which is possible in any of the above species and even humans where it is known as Black Jaundice.
@29Texan not u can exclude the jag buddy and panther is used more than often to describe a black leopard or black jag and the cougar is only called panther in florida i dont know why cause they are not big cats they arent in the panthera genus
@29Texan u said Panther, jaguar, mountain lion, puma, cougar.... they're all the same damn thing. the jaguar is not a cougar, the cougar has all the names u listed except the jaguar which is a big cat just like the tiger, lion & leopard, the cougar is in small cat family not Panthera
@29Texan u said Panther, jaguar, mountain lion, puma, cougar.... they're all the same damn thing. the only thing wrong with what u said is jaguar, cause jaguar is not the same as the cougar, the jag is a big cat like the tiger, lion & the leopard while the cougar(m.lion, catamount, puma etc.) is a member of the small cat family, & the term 'panther' also refers to the cougar but when u say 'black panther' it describes a black leopard or black jaguar
Jungle? At night? Here in my home, my heart jumped in same second I hear the hoar. Even thus, Black Panther is my 2nd favourite animal. Lions rules during the day, but... black panthers are the queens of night, the shadows hunters, the silent death.
@cheesegrater1330 loz, ya. I'd probably pee mai pants and try to do my best lion roar or scream for my lion. After all, my name is Lion (lolz seriously :|)
Cougar="Puma concolor", a felidae from the Americas. aka panther, but only in the Americas
Leopard="Panthera pardus", a felidae from Africa and Asia. (there are no felidae of the genus "Panthera" native of the Americas, except for the Jaguar="Panthera onca")
"Black panther" refers properly to melanistic variants of individuals of the "Panthera" genus.
@Coopenator ... truly, The black one called Black Panther... Panther is all kind of species in Panthera genera... including Lion, Tiger, Leopard, and Jaguar... Both Leopard and Jaguar had mostly rare black variant... All of them are able to roar...
@Coopenator I do know that people out here call pumas 'panthers' as well, at least half of the ones I talk to. But that's probably like how we call bison 'buffalo.'
There is no actual species as a Black Panther, a so called Black panther is a black variant of leopard, cougar or jaguar. If in Africa and Asia it will be a black leopard (Panthera pardus) If in North America a black cougar or mountain lion (Puma concolor) & If in South and Central America a black jaguar (Panthera onca). In good light you will still see the spots & rossetes in the coat of a black leopard / jaguar.
I believe that is the actual sound of a North American Cougar or Puma, also called a panther. A cougar can take down prey weighing up to 5 times his size by leaping and snapping the neck instantly. He is very powerful, fast, with great night vision 10x ours and usually very quiet - unless he's MAD!
the sound made me jump lol i love black panthers
