  • Magnificent...makes me realise how much I miss John Peel...

  • Beefheart is beyond anything in popular music.

  • no mr. zoot horn rollo? :(

  • The Captain Abides...we miss ya but will always have Trout Mask Replica, Safe As Milk and the rest to keep us in touch. Thanks for the sweet cosmic racket.

  • 9 dislikes ?? Do humanity a favour -- do not breed.. and then take your own life.

  • @b33int seconded

  • 9 dislikes? fuckin' idiots!

  • best are first to go

  • Does anyone know how to make the long lunar note?

  • I am hoping that 100 years from now when people talk about creative artists of the 20th century, the Captain's name will be one of the first mentioned. He was too good for his time.

  • Fantastic!

  • 1:19 one of the most powerful riffs i've ever heard. Fuckin immense.

  • That blissful bass riff at 2:00 combined with the guitars....damn...can't describe how awesome that is.

  • I used to hate these guys.....Now, they`re actually alright.....Well, some of their songs anyway. They don`t beat Yes or White Stripes though.....Hiw hard would you say this song would be to play? Might consider doing it for As performanc next year

  • @guitargoddess002 wow.....

  • @guitargoddess002 It's two interlocking guitar parts, so good luck trying to play both of them simultaneously. I learned the Zoot Horn Rollo part years ago and love playing along with it - although now I watch this video I realise that in fact I've been playing parts of one part and parts of the other part at different times. Maybe I should do an instructional video. One tip is to tune your guitar to DADGAD if you're playing the slide part. Makes it way easier.

  • @lexo30 Drop D is awkward, but worth it.....

  • @guitargoddess002 The only other Beefheart guitar part I've ever figured out is Grown So Ugly from Safe as Milk, and that sounds great in Drop D. Especially if you use a compressor to get a tight audio close-up (so to speak) in the quiet bits.

  • @lexo30 Compressors probably WOULD actually, thinking about it.....Music Tech stuff comes in handy at times. Their music is much harder than it sounds to play overall then? From the songs you`ve mentioned so far.....Got rid of our CB album a while back because we hated it.....Not sure about now.....Regret it, because any music is good to keep regardless of how bad it sounds when we get it. Do you agree?

  • @guitargoddess002 I agree, although I admit that I've gone through two copies of Trout Mask Replica and I still don't fucking get it. :) I know it's meant to be great but I can't listen to it with anything resembling basic pleasure. Yeah, Beefheart is not easy. It's very intricate, it's very arranged and it's often highly unpredictable - you can't just riff along with it. I recently tried to figure out the time signature of Grown So Ugly's quiet bit and I think it's 7/8 - but I might be wrong.

  • @lexo30 Some time signatures, if there is one, is very hard to work out, even play to.....Mars Volta is rather difficult, but it`s probably more predictable and clearly structured than CB, behind all the effects

  • @guitargoddess002 I'm that old that the Mars Volta came along after I'd stopped paying attention. Even bands like Crimson and Henry Cow, when they have irregular time signatures, usually have them in a fairly predictable way (not that that's bad...) but with Beefheart it's like the structure of each song is bespoke. You have to learn the whole song, or else you're screwed. Nobody could ever have sat in with Beefheart for a verse and a chorus and then picked it up.

  • @guitargoddess002 But sure, it's better to hold onto something that you don't get now, on the grounds that you may like it later. It took me a long time to like Zappa, for example. For years, I thought he was just annoying. Eventually I read a fascinating book about him that sent me back to the music, and I spent hundreds getting most of his enormous output. Now I admire him as a towering genius and listen with pleasure. Funny how things work out.

  • @lexo30 Could you perhaps show us the parts? I'd appreciate it.

  • @weinerbongo I'll be happy to, when I get the chance.

  • @lexo30 Awesome, thanks.

  • @guitargoddess002 Hate is a strong word... also bands like white stripes and yes are good in there own way... can't compare them to beefheart EVER! what you meant to say was, "these guys never used to be something i could get into, but now im starting to feel it. I think i'm still more keen on White Stripes or Yes."

  • He was a genius. Can't believe his death has gon so unremarked. Rest in thought Don.

  • straight on to my favourites ! thank you, their music creates many lucid moments for everyone that listens. A timeless performance that will exist forever, even cheating oblivion, what a guy !

  • Back for more. This is one of the most intricate songs that Ive ever heard. The way that the guitars weave in and out of each other is mezmerizing. The Captain's voice compliments it perfectly. Is this show available on DVD?

  • Ive been a Zappa fan for many years and love "Bongo Fury" with the Captain.Just now getting into the Capn's solo stuff and am grateful for YT and all of the CB posts on here.Im blown away by the incredible musicians that played with him over the years. There was some serious mental perception going on between band members to play that stuff! That kind of chemistry cant be bought. The mainstream could never embrace this music. Its for the few who "get it."

  • For D

  • miss you Captain - hope you hooked up with Frank!

  • fucking brilliant!!!!!

  • It's great to see this performance, thank you. Great wordplay, rhyming, energetic band.

  • Dead as a doornail!

  • R.I.P Don

  • this is a Masterpiece...

  • Farewell Mon capitan. Webcor webcor....

  • Thank you so much, that makes it easier... go wild!

  • 3.42 PERFECT switch, props to the band

  • thanks for this great upload Hewish !

  • I love and listen to every kind of music from Bach through Yardbirds to King Crimson, but this music can't find the way to me, probably I should listen to it all the time? I'm afraid it's boring.

  • @sanyivagyok Start with the "safe as milk" album, it's kinda hard to jump right into "trout mask". My first experience was painful; now I can't go a day without it... it's kinda like sex.

  • @Kaligulasucks I dunno... been listening to every kinda music since I was 10, now 53. sometimes takes long time to find the hidden beauty in music, other times you fall in love in a minute. lotta times oyu think you already know everything about a certain piece, you nkow it inside-out, but still can find a little sound, or something new in it, and you'll love it even more. that's the beauty in it

  • Can somebody please explain me what,s the big deal with this guy and his music? I've been trying to listening to his songs, but can't finish with any of them. It sounds like a mess to me, though Zappa sounded messy the first time too. Is it so great, because he can't sing at all? This music is a very basic one, somebody mentions Led Zeppelin here, doesn't know anything about music, they can't be mentioned on the same page. One single member of Zeppelin is worth more than 10 of this guy. ...morte

  • CBH used the music to paint his words, the complexity of the words and music mirror each other.

Howling Wolf was his vocal influence.CBH brought organic chaos to the sound.

Look at a Jackson Pollack painting,it seems to be a mess but patterns do emerge,so to in this music.

CBH wanted the listener to be disturbed, humored, and left in awe.

Only a hand full of musicians could,or can play this music.

Its not commercial listening music,it demands attention.Good bad thats a taste issue.try listen again.

  • @sanyivagyok "One single member of Zeppelin is worth more than 10 of this guy..." It's like you hate music or something lol... how can you be a music lover and say that about such an incredible musician, sure it's not your style but, between John Peel and about 10000000000 others Beefheart is one of the greatest things to happen to music, hes different but when did different make things bad. Rock n roll would have been burned at the stake in the 40's with comments like that.

  • @omegant he's probably John French. Like, not even a fanboy or anything, but quite literally John French. Johnny boy there funded a new documentary recently with the specific goals of shitting on Beefheart and claiming that Led Zeppelin was actually a more innovative band than Beefheart's bands were. If you've ever seen the Beefheart documentary with footage of John French standing in the woods with a house phone nailed to a tree held to his ear, desperately trying not to look into the camera

  • @godfreyhowatchin just trying his sad, old man's hardest to pretend to be cool, bragging about how all the drum lines were really his idea and not Don's, you've got the wrong documentary, shut that one off and burn it and watch the John Peel one.

  • @godfreyhowatchin Whats your beef with John French? Vliet was primarily a sculptor, he used the musicians to realise his ideas.John French was there at the start....without him transcribing the stuff the Captain would be unable to reproduce any of it.So take a chill pill and give John a break he is keeping the stuff alive and doing a great job of it...not Shitting on Beefheart but showing him respect.Read Lunar Notes and Mike Barnes's excellent book and find out what a Twat Beefheart was...

  • Royal In Perfect

  • THIS IS WHEN I FELL FOR HIS MUSIC - AND ON IT WENT YOU GOTTA ALL CATCH THE DOCUMENTARY BY JOHN PEEL

  • Superb.

    RIP

  • It sucks that an ordinary and kinda mediocre band from the same era like led zeppelin get elevated to the status of gods while a true genius like van vliet didn't get the attention he deserved. the man didnt give a fuck

  • R I P Don

    you re great, forever

  • I also miss him. What a genius.

  • RIP, legend.

  • I will miss you, but you will always be with me in my truck!

"Cause a man or a woman without a big eyed bean from Venus

Is suffering with the worstest of curses!!"

  • RIP Don. Thank you for music that has been part of my life for 35 years.

  • RIP What a wild, wild track from a wild, wild man.

  • RIP

  • RIP, captain.

  • Beefheart was THE man...

    RIP, Don...

  • Is this true? The whole universe is smaller if the Captain is dead. I can't believe that so much genius could die.

No more moonlight in Vermont. Gonna cry now.

  • RIP Don. You were an original.

  • If he packed on more weight, he'd turn into Strother Martin.

  • RIP Captain, one of a kind.

  • RIP..............thumbs up to show your respect

  • @electrickabuki thumbs way way up

  • RIP Captain...........thumbs up to show your respect

  • "Hit that long, lunar note and let it float . . ." RIP

  • Wild - just revisiting some of my old favorite cap'n videos and find him gone. passed on to continue the ride on the other side. His performances will live forever - fair travels Captain!

  • RIP don - he'll be sadly missed.

  • RIP The Captain.

  • R.IP. Don,

There will never be another musician like you. You changed mine and many other people's lives with your honest, thought provoking music and your surrealistic personality and art. You were TRULY one of the originals, and your beautiful spirit and art will live on in our hearts forever.

"The dust blows forward and the dust blows back....."

  • thanks to a genious, who was called captain beesomewhat i saw them and i loved him but that is bullenscheiße

  • @Joppason

  • Listening to this is like taking part in a ritual of madness, I love it!

  • Distant cousins, there's a limited supply.

And we're down to the dozens, and this is why:

Big Eyed Beans from Venus! Oh my, oh my.

  • One of my fave Cap'n songs. The drumming inparticular is mesmerising.

  • "Check these out, Big Eyed Beans from Venus. I'll let a few out, and let em pass in between us."

One of the coolest lines in a song ever!

  • "Big-eyed Beans from Venus! Oh my oh my!"

    :)

  • am shuttin my eyes and hearing the wolf..this is wow music

  • @stevom31

Beautiful comment.... I'm shutting my eyes right now!!!

  • HE is The MANNNNNNNNNN!

  • I love me some Beef

  • DEVO, The Fall and many others, this man is a massive influence. I had a ticket for his last UK tour in 1980 and sold it, as I was I poor student. What a twat I was!!

  • the best rock and roll band EVER

  • great... thanks for keping this alive

  • This song was done in 1972 well before "Jocko Homo". Devo and quite of few of the Akron and Cleveland bands openly acknowledge Beefheart as an important influence.

  • splendido!

  • great song, thia guy may not live forever but hes music will!!

  • rip?

  • Still alive as far I know - he turned 69 in January this year.

  • @Hewish Roy Estrada has confirmed that he's alive and struggling against some kind of cancer

  • @Hewish

Hahaha, one of my all time faves of theirs -

and I always explain that Captain Beefheart has been long gone. Don Van Vliet. however, is still alive! :)

I imagine that Beefheart was as much a character created by the artist DVV in the same way any of his paintings were.

  • @Hewish sadly no longer with us as of today.........

  • @Hewish Sadly he Passed today!!!! RIP DON VAN VLIET!!!!!!

  • @Hewish he just passed away today. Complications from Multiple Sclerosis.

  • @Hewish RIP Captain. I'm impressed he lasted so well

  • @Hewish M A Y H E R.I.P.

  • @nspcvdgg now dead. yesterday.

  • Comment removed

  • @nspcvdgg Died today.

  • @nspcvdgg your a prophet? :)

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou -1, if someone is sick for years, you're not a prophet to randomly guess his death

  • @rurakker just a joke bro

  • @nspcvdgg

Yes, sadly now he is ... Good-bye Oh Captain, my Captain ...

  • @nspcvdgg yah :(

  • Sounds like the drums from Jocko Homo.

  • Beefheart ain't dead!

  • Only Don can tell the crowd their lazy because they won't stand up for the tune..

  • I just love this stuff

  • J'etait à l'enregistrement de ce concert, j'avais 17 ans GEANT, je me souviens encore de la reprise de "sheriff off hong kong" du total delire........

  • It takes genuis to seize meaning from chaos ! Love the Capt! Great Band !

What a talent to create artful chaos ! Or is he injecting absurdity into order?

Who cares ! it sounds great !

  • He is absoulutly out of his F'n gourd- gotta love him.

  • Hope you're doing as best can do, Don. This is pure magic, as always!!!

  • At 0:34 - 0:37 Don's up to his old tricks he clearly fluffs the lyrics (he never rehearsed with the band) and immediately raises his hands to the soundman to raise the levels blaming his error on the soundman - if you look at his other clips on YouTube he does this all the time - on many songs and tries to blame the soundman - this is corroborated in John French's book _through the eyes of MAGIC_ this is a great song but a mediocre vocal performance - the band as always are great.

  • @drkanukie

His vocals here are mediocre? Then my perception must be warped - for I like this one too much for words.

  • Is that Jack White at 0:25????

    (Kidding.)

  • when my human get's me blue and miror man won't do, i like big eyed beans from venus...

  • Beefheart could easily be the shrink for Sigmund Freud ! this cats gone from sane right through to totally fucked up to GURU ,THATS ALL A MAN COULD WISH FOR

  • this cat is nuts!

  • what an innovate man , what a fuckn cool man. stone cold. cool.

  • slippin peter in a box

  • yo si fui la esceula oinhe pute

  • This album was his masterpiece - and quite possibly the best album in the world...

  • best song ever written

  • Exquisite as always - Shame the "Good" Captain was such a complete tossa.....

  • Haiku meets the Beat in a harmolodic frenzy... Thanx for being Captain Beefheart...

  • Far out man he totally looks like Howard Moon a bit hahahhahaha

  • Amazing, The Captain never fails to amaze!

  • Well put Honeysuckle!!

  • that long lunar note sounds incredibly great in this version...

  • Excuse me, I eat too many Big eyed beans from Venus.

  • Absolutley Smoking, makes my hair stand on end!

  • This man illuminates everything around him.We shall never see his like again.

Genius doesn't come near to describing him.

  • If only because "genius" is trite compared to whatever adjective you might dig up.

  • Sorry, but this man is in a class of his own.You either get him or you don't.Words however elequently phrased can never do him justice.

  • If you read mine past comments here, I love Beefheart probably as much as ye do. So I was praising him with that statement. OK?

  • Got my wires crossed, all the best.

  • @evajom1 I'd try , loosening the grip on the edge of this marvelous cliff the Magic band has me hanging onto to explain my feelings deeper; but I'd only fall off backwards to sink n drown in the pool of my well earned sweat n stuff that awaits my final fall from this dense earthly platform.

  • Nobody paints music like Captain Beefheart..

    .

  • Paints music...... I like that.

  • A huge steaming pile of pure BRILLIANCE

  • What an incredible track!

  • one for wolves to howl to - love it.

  • clearspot is the best album of all time!

  • 3:41 one of the cleanest live changes I've ever heard. See, Beefheart was country-club-balls-frostingly weird, AND managed to get highly skilled musicians to play their asses off for him.

  • Just gettin into this madness after being turned off at a early age. This is pure FUKIN GENIUS to rank alongside all the originals.Where do i start ?

  • thanks for these videos. I love them Hewish

  • Go to see beefheart & sit there like a bunch of lazy toads.....must be a french thing.

  • Maybe because they respect Beefheart...?

  • If Beefheart can't be recognized for duly reconfiguring rock music into an alternate universe of re-energized possibilities, as I think he should be given, then let him be recoginzed for his approach to the lyric - his lyrics could still clobber anything any day, so original is his conception.

  • And why, may I ask, do I receive hostile reactions from ye?

If by any chance this is some Beefheart-hater doing this, I refer ye to some songs out of Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off, Baby: Orange Claw Hammer, or Frownland, or Space-Age Couple, or Petrified Forest?

  • this ain't nothin but magic...wild.

  • "Midnite hat size"

    Great nick-name.

  • @CaptainPillowMusic

Obviously a reference to Tom Snyder and his talk show "Tomorrow," that came on at midnight.

  • Excellent!

  • It's an absolute slide symphony. It's kinda like one's first time on LSD. Incredible intensity yet sublime.

  • The sheer awesomeness.... Captain forever!
