  • Very well done Pat. I enjoyed the video a great deal. I find myself in the crossada position fairly often but I have only been taught to do it with double daggers. I like the idea of practicing that method with other weapons and mano mano.

  • I love your style of teaching and your methods. seems very sound, and I have Arnis/Kali experience.

  • @garciagungfu Thank you, if your ever in the area please drop by.

  • i would have to say compared to dog brothers this is more art form and less realism

  • The art form is the back bone of the art and without it you would be hard pressed to pull off any realism in your FMA, have a look at our Black Eagle Society fights, raw and with a bit of realism too, one cannot survive without the other. After all it is the art that gives you your basics and attributes.

  • yeah i agree, although a lot of the artform can be dropped or never learned and one can be a fearsome fighter. most of the artform is kinda pointless imo, like most artforms they dont transend into real fights very well.

i have watched some of your black eagle fights thats how i ended up at this vid.

the sticks that were being used seemed lighter than normal? this might just be sound quality though.

  • however what i was really interested in asking you is what gloves you use? they looked smaller also, atm using ice hockey gloves which are a little bulky and unrealistic

  • I would have to disagree on the art side as it has more than benifited my fght skills. The sticks I used in the Black Eagles where by no means lighter, I like a nice heavy beast. And the gloves I use are street hockey gloves as I find the ice hockey ones too cumbersome and bulky. Hope that helps

    Pat

  • cool thanks i'll look into them, i thought it might have just been the sound quality. All the best :-)

  • do you know the address of the school you have in Aguascalientes, Mexico?. thanks.

  • nice video no more easily move to doing

  • if you watch ong bak 2 2009 the film only skims the surface of the arts history

  • All very interesting but no proof at all to back up what you say. Until such time as proof can be given we can only conclude that you are making assumptions. Just because someone say it is so, does not make it so. Best regards Pat

  • Ong Back is a film, it is not real...

  • It is there for your entertainment much in the same way as the Bourne Trilogy

  • these people who moved like monkeys and crows they had long nails sharp nails use your imagination GUNTING eye strikes etc after all these styles are taken from studying animals or better yet under developed humans who moved like animals kicks were not just kicks they were claw feet scrapeing your skin

  • chinese warring each other but the spanish just added fencing style sword fighting to it thats why after ww1 ww2 practitioners lost the monkey stance for a more static fencing style stance i come from the mountains 5 hrs away from cebu in the old days there were people who lived in the forest who knew the arts but moved like monkeys and crows they were called wak waks or aswang some scary people but the japs killed most of them so forget history books there only biased to there source

  • books there all biased to there sources just tally up the amount of silat styles sorounding all those islands and your result will be silat they never used to move so static it used to look like a monkey with sticks it obvious it came from indians arabians and

  • silat at the beginning from filipines to the malay to indonesia you can find the word silat in many styles do the math i beleive it was called the majapayat empire which included mauy thai forget history

  • the original term for all these systems is silat this is what it was called before phillipines was westernised it is an art originally practiced by muslims and im catholic so im not being biased its realy a case of adding the numbers all these arts are similar but there are more styles with the word

  • HEY!!!!! wait!...

those maneuvers are dull!! i mean, i'm not that good in arnis, but, those maneuvers are dull...

i've seen so many spot to make a counter-attack in his moves..

arnis don't give such an easy spot to attack on the defense ( he is using mainly the defense and counter-attack after defense)

i don't know if he is just making dull moves 'coz it is not the real spar, but, i don't know. that's not the arnis that i've grown with all this time. manong will definitely agree w/ me

  • If they are dull, simple, dont watch. But first of all I am teaching slowley, if it is done at full speed it is a different matter and if it is not your Arnis, fine. But having learned this principle from the late GM Presas, and that is what it is just a principle and a very small portoin of the art that has worked for me in real encounters, I like it.

  • Look Man, I think you are very good Arnisador but it better to simply leave history to historians. Why don't you just simply settle;

"That Arnis is definely a Filipino Martial Arts that has been practice by our ancestor during the Pre-Spanish period."

    And, that's that........

  • Historical records show that Lapulapu came from Borneo and returned there after the Spanish left the Philippines for the first time, and I have never said Arnis was not FMA I just questioned some of the descriptions behind some of the terms that are not proven.

  • Historical too that was put under debate by the historians themselves since the late 90's, I should know, co'z I'm a history teacher from a respectable science high-school in mla.And to be honest, it was never proven.

  • May I also suggest you read the book Cebuano Eskrima Behond the Myth, this is a very educational and well researched work by two very notable Pinoy writers and practioners of the FMA

  • You know what...dude, your recomemding those 2 pinoy writers whose theory was never proven. The fact is, there are a lot of different arnis styles in the Phils, and each has it's their own stories about the history of the Philippines and their style of arnis. Yours (cebuano eskrima) is just one of them, so dude, just stick to being a good arnisador and leave history to historians

  • Your correct, none of it is proven, but as a history teacher you yourself should know that we have to deal with the facts that can be seen and not assume something is true just because someone say's so. I look at several resources and I am happy with accepting that nothing is proven at this time, therefore people claiming that Kali is an ancient art is at this time not proven either.

  • Magellan certainly was killed by Kali/Arnis/Escrmia.

He was killed by bow and arrow...but bow and arrow is part of Kali. If you think Kali is only stick fighting, you need an education.

Kali has many areas...stick, double stick, stick and knife, bolo, spear, bow and arrow, sling, throwing knife, portable cannon, healing arts, biting and pinching, empty hand. The warrior Lapu Lapu was a kali warrior.

  • Actually if you red the historical account of the battle by Pigafetta (the chronicaler of fleet) you will find Magelland was injured by a spear, he then went to draw his sword and could not, the tribesmen decended on him and hacked him to death with spears and swords. And this was after many hours of 30 plus Conquestadors fighting some 1500 tribesmen.

  • There was never any mention of Lapu Lapu even being present at the battle and there is much debate as to which island the battle actually took place, It may have been Mactan as many beleive but some historians think it may be possible that it could well have been another island.

  • There is no mention of Kali in any Spanish records including that of Pigafetta. As a matter of fact it is comonly known amoungst many FMA GM's that before the early 20th Century most of the old Eskrimadors simply refered to their skills as 'Fughting'.

  • Evidence is pointing towards the term 'Kali' (which is just one term for the FMA) as being a recent 20th Centuary term that has been adopted by many groups.

No historical records or artifacts have shown the term Kali being used or referd to before the mid 20th Centuary. So the book is still open on this.

    Best regards

    Pat

  • Actually read the account by Pigafetta and you will find he was injured by spear and then mass attacked by sword and spear, there is no evidence that Lapu Lapu was even there and certainly no evidance of the existance of Kali at that time

  • Also Lapu Lapu was actually a Pirate from Borneo. And where in Kali do you find the portable Cannon techniques?????

Sorry but without factual evidence you are jumping to conclusions.

  • The first time Kali was ever mentioned in any records was in 1957, before that there has yet to be found any mention or records to the term Kali. Kali, like Eskrima and Arnis are names that have been adopted and accepted for the FMA in more recent times. Before that no one knows what it was called, if anything

  • As for biting, I hope your not refering to KinoMutai (SP?) that has already been proven to be very unsound indeed and it's real meaning can be quite embarrasing if you use it in the Philippines

  • ooh i miss doing this...

"you're not jesus, your feet arent nailed to the floor, MOVE" - stayed with me, that has.

it's a shame exams got in the way... i think i'm gonna start back up once i get to uni, if i can find a club

back to the beginning though...three years is too long a time to remember everything.

    :D

  • Ah the old Jesus quote, I still use that now hahaha

  • i worked with them

    get me (h)

  • i think kali is way older than magellan and lapu lapu era. the art was probably being used during the malay nations era. not just old. it's ancient... the use of the sticks was developed because the conquestador missionaries banned native bladed weapons...

  • Actually the Spanish encouraged the use of blade fighting skills from the local villaged to help them defend against the Moro raiders who constantly raided the coast in search of wealth and slaves, they actually train local garrisons as they did not have the man power themselves to defend all their out posts. People forget that the majority of the Philippines was anamistic in religious beleifs hence it was so easy to convert them to catholosism and they where quite keen to defend against Moro's

  • more history it defended against the forged sword of the european sapainard again filipino rattan fighting sticks moving twice as fast and thats against the spainards twice till the third time when the spaniards brought the gun and the common cold ghaaaaaaaaad so much drama anyways keep up the good work in here "its all GOOD!

  • I shall take this knowledge I have gained here to my next pillow fight xP

  • where this sport origin?

  • It's origin is the Philippines

  • how old is it?

  • since worldwar I.. ^__^

  • even before magellan the spanish conquestador came to philippines in 1421 a.d..... filipino warriors used this martial arts for defense.

  • Its as old as magellan..its an hybrid warrior art made for a warrior of a clan..one example is Lapulapu(a DATU..a leader of a Clan)..it is this art that killed Magellan 6 Days upon landing in Mactan.

  • idiot,

stop believing any bullshit they tell you at your school. i am filipino-american and according to filipino, european and american historians, magellan was killed by an arrow and javelins, NOT KALI/ARNIS/ESCRIMA.

  • kung ayaw mo maniwala mag basa ka ng libro, historical accounts written by spaniards who survived the battle of mactan.

  • Actually Magellan visited other islands before Mactan, he landed and stayed several days in Cebu and only visited Mactan for the battle. Evidence also shows that Lapu Lapu was a pirate from Borneo.

  • Hate to say this to you dude, but your knowledge of Philippine history is flawed. Lapu-lapu is no pirate, he is a tribe leader whose tribe is already engage in trade with the Chinese and other Asian traders. He simply foresees as to what will happen next if more Spaniard started to arrive.

  • Actually he came from Borneo and settled in Mactan with his wives and some tribe members and kept raiding the ships that where passing off of Mactan Island to trade with Humabon hence Humabon considered him a pirate and is the main reason Humabon requested Magellan sort him out

  • Soory man, your info is still flawed, Borneo was acually owned by the Sultan of Sulu, if so the Lapu-lapu may have been related to the Sultan of Sulu- unfortunately there are no evendences that say so. Also, before the Sapainard, the Philippines being an a group of islands is ruled by diffent tribes, it is not uncommon for these tribes to be at war with one another. As for Humabon and Lapu-Lapu- they are just simply two tribes who are at war with each other.

  • Lapu-Lapu was a true local and very much related somehow to Humabon; I forget exactly, sorry.

Side note: Magellan offered to fight Lapu-Lapu on behalf of Humabon. Lapu-Lapu real estate was a good bargain for Humabon and accept the crown of Spain; not a reality, of course. Magellan was eager to fight and prove the power of the VATICAN (Jesus), the NAVAL GUNS he so proudly flaunted, and the KNIGHT ARMOR, which had a very different application from the locals. The actual fight was classic.

  • the original name of arnis is kali... it was first develop by lapu lapu a local hero in the philippines together with his warriors that defeated the of ferdinand magellan and those spanish conquestadors....

  • LAPULAPU invented nothing and definitely not kali, it`s a mere rumor to attract westerners.

  • excuse me my friends, but did is see my good old friend Maginoo Lucy doing working out while preggy? Truly amazing! Hats off to you mate! Jun Angeles Santa Barbara CA USA.

  • very nicely done, good solid technique. pisau77

  • lol that baby hasn't been born yet and it's already learning arnis!

  • Thank you for sharing your art,Master Pat...it must be wonderful that you can share your passion for martial arts with your wife...wish I had that!

  • haha i'm pretty sure arnis doesn't endanger pregnant women the same way smoking does.

  • mmm

  • Why? She is pregnant, not ill. And what if someone decided to attacker her, should she not learn and use her skills?

  • eskrima is not good for pregnant women.

  • only if the pregnant women in question is the one attacking an excrima expert ;)

  • well ummm... It's not the exact same thing but it is the basic block counter which was taught to us during our first week of summer training. His name is Ryan Gialogo and he also teaches the singapore arnis team as well as being a teacher in Ateneo de Manila.

  • Ah! did he teach the Singapore team that competed in December 2005 in Manila at the Master Rey Dominguez event? It may not be the exact same thing but I am sure it follows the same principals which is the great thing about FMA, it can be the same but different.

  • umm.. I'm not sure. I think I have to ask him... All I know is that he actually went to singapore and he is also part of the national Philippine team. :P

  • aha! My coach taught us something like that too :D

  • Who is your coach???? maybe I know them

  • good by Danilo Rossi italy

Was good to see you at Rey Galangs Bakbakan seminar. had been a long time! Still teaching in Bolton, but not on big a scale as you....

  • I have over the years learnt from Modern Arnis, Pekiti Tirsia, Lapunti Arnis De Abanico, JKD Kali, but mainly from Doce Pares, but this is our own interpretation from many of the Masters that have taught us.

Don't worry about Lucy she often gets pay back on me hehehe!
