  • osadharon; i love this instrument so much; the feel is entirely different when you hear esraj!!

  • he is playing bhairavi & not sindhu bhairavi;

    sindhu bhairavi belongs to asavari thaat with a prominent 'shuddha' Re; this has prominent komal Re, which is a trait of bhairavi

  • Very nice. Can you tell us about your instrument? Is it a cross between an esraj and sitar? It looks much larger than most esraj that I've seen.

  • @mikaelsong this is an esraj - but a much larger and more sophisticated version of the instrument that is played chiefly in shantiniketan, the tagore university near kolkata in west bengal. the fingering, seating position, etc are completely different (the thumb goes behind the fretboard), enabling the player to play on three strings and be versatile. buddhadev is the head of department of esraj in shantinkent. another great player, shubhayu sen majumdar, lives in kolkata.

  • OMG: simply amazing, takes you to a different world.
