  • Yes I agree, stupid ads. Im not going to buy anything from rich tv pricks.

  • "...why the eruption of mt saint helens took everyone by surprise"

What the hell? Scientist knew mt saint helens was gonna blow. Theres that famous story of an old timer refusing to leave his lodge when he was told that the mountain was gonna blow.

  • What they are referring to is the fact that the blast was lateral rather than vertical.

  • My browser hangs when the video gets to the first stupid ad. I have tried three times with two different browsers, but I can't get past the first ad. I can watch only the first part of the documentary because of this. Did anyone else encounter this problem or knows how to fix it? I'm angry enough that I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM AMWAY!

  • I had to close my browser once and reopen then it worked, I agree the ads are annoying.

  • Stupid Bullshit commercials

  • i agree

  • one long video its 46 minutes and 8 seconds ?!?!

  • please try to comment on the vidoes

    not politics

  • I say that this is better than any action movie ever.

  • i agree.

  • I am still amazed how the volcanic dust ended up all the way around the world!

  • when did this happen? my brother lives in oregon and he said he saw it smoking before.

  • holy shit my Teachers sistser was there when it happened her house was destroyed

  • Bah! Without warning? They knew it was going to blow, they evacuated most people, and the side of the volcano was swelling at quite a swift rate. That's enough to suggest that the volcano is going to blow.

  • i lived 10 miles out side the "blue zone"...its scared the living day out of me

  • Hey! I live in Vancouver WA!

  • I lived on the Oregon coast when it erupted, jolted me right out of bed. Funny thing is, everyone I know from Portland (which is much closer) never felt it.

  • How on earth can a video not be available in CANADA.... Great video but I can't watch the rest of them D:

  • go through a proxy so it looks like you're in the US

  • When it erupted i lived in california.. we had ash all over atleast and inch..

  • This is soooo annoying, don't get me wrong, I loved this episode and I wanted to watch all the other episodes but somehow they're not allowed in the UK!? That sucks BIG TIME, I hate being in the UK:(

  • It's the same here - I'm in Germany and it's "Not Available in your country". So rubbish.

  • that is so messed up! is the uk a communist country? try going through a proxy server.

  • Volcanoes are like a big ass,

They blow out hot steamy messes and sometimes without warning. They love to storm out gas and sometimes that gas kills.

Like i said, volcanoes are like big asses.

  • i did not know it was that bad

  • Politicians should not be the last word on Scientific / Safety decisions. Politicians have ONE CONCERN: POLITICS!

    NEVER TRUST A POLITICIAN...DUH!!!

  • There are ways to increase the You Tube screen size - I watch all vids in 800x600...

  • how how ?

  • this is old

  • you cant

  • how do you get the video player to be this size?

  • you become a large corporation

  • smoke cloud went around the fucking earth... when I was in 4th grade in Shelton Washington at Mountain View Elementary they gave us samples of the ash and pictures in a tube.

  • how long ago was this ..?

    somebody PLEASE FUCKING HELP

  • Probably network cooties.

  • dude calm your ass the fuck down lol

  • You're computer may not be hi-def capable, depending on how old it is. . . otherwise it could be an internet issue. Try restarting your browser and finding the video again. And if that doesn't work, i'm stumped.

  • How about pressing play?

  • you should try paying your youtube bill on time

  • Nice. full episode.

  • omg this is full episode , how awesome is national geographic???

  • their awsome

  • Full episodes? Now that's cool.

  • never takes thing too lightly, especially before disaster strikes.

  • exactly!

  • full episodes yay!!

  • Bagel

  • yay full episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Superb documentary! I've never seen such a detailed analysis of the "why and how".

  • Wow, a landslide that turns in to a volcano burst.....deadly

  • i had never even heard of Madagascar until that funny film came out with the animals..

  • these kind of natural catastrophes remind me that we're all sitting in the same boat. its time we humans unite for our own good

  • ahh FYI killing isn't in the name of God and thats why we are going to be destroyed because of people like you, idiot

  • Come on guys , I'm not that old, do you really never heard about Mount Helen?

  • I'm not that old, either, but i remember it happening clearly... though most of the boys don't remember much about it, because they only learned about it in history or something in school

  • at the start they say it.. 1980

  • Comment removed

  • The main eruption was on May 18th 1980

  • May 1980. I have studied this in school and heard it mentioned for years.

  • INteresting, Well done!

  • tjat was fucking crazy 20,000 logs, it isnt even water anymore lol

  • My dad was ten miles south of the mountain. He said he was in the red zone, maybe he meant blue zone.... I'm thinking, dad why were you there if you were in any kind of zone!! He was just making waffles for his birthday when it erupted. Well, good thing the blast didn't go south or I wouldn't be here today.

  • lights out

  • .... i live near mt saint helens before and they're were warning about the volcanic eruption, they thought it would be big but not that big

  • I remember all that... they said it would be a big eruption and it would cause some destruction, but they said it would be close to the mountain.... shows how much they know about volcanic eruptions..

I remember this pretty well... it was on the news for weeks

  • So it was 1500 times more powerful than the hiroshima bomb....

but it only killed 57 people.....

Mt. saint helens sure is a pushover.

  • It's all got to do with location and evacuation and safety precautions. Had there been a city like right next to the mountain, as in... RIGHT next to it, then there would have been many more dead. You see the evidence of this all the time in history... people were just lucky that they weren't frozen in time like they were in Pompeii

  • true. I live in washington and my grandma said she heard the massive shockwave and could see the plume in the air.

  • yeah, you could see it for hundreds of miles.

  • It is two channels that i love, it is Discovery and National Geo :)

And I am glad I have them both at home :)

I have seen this documantary several times :)

  • omgg i love both of those channels too

  • THIS WAS AWESOME!

  • This is very good.

The only thing is, they highlighted the negative parts which really made me think that we humans are really stubborn, or just plain stupid(some of us). Like how the Governor I think, Ignored the warnings.

and How the Scientists didn't even think about the buldge O_O God ! they said that it was growing 5 feet everyday WTF Imagine ur pimple growing 5feet a day, wouldn't you freak out and ask a doctor ??? who wouldn't think that It will erupt in sideway ? XD

  • humans are stubborn and the governor was stupid and scientists hadn't really had a lot of time to seriously study and understand the complexities of a volcanic eruption

  • not against ur comment but, maybe we are just stubborn, or sometimes everybody doesnt state the negative parts and only talk about the positive, it teaches us what we really are. i think its pretty good that they higlighted all the negative parts.

and if i had a huge pimple... growing 5 feet a day... i think it would've have popped in an hour..

and one gy did thin it would expload side ways, they just didnt listen to him...

  • GEARS

  • This was F interesting!!! More please! More of this lenght on Youtube!

  • I like it! Big Screen, great show :P hope to see more! :D

  • Where did they get such a big screen for this one?

  • interesting ;)

  • 27:16 Looks like Borat ! :D

  • this was very interesting , i watched the whole thing

  • If You Tube is going to serve it's patrons along with Discovery and National Geo then longer videos are more enjoyable and worthwhile to watch not the 30 sec-1 1/2 mins that we've been saddled with.

  • up to 10minutes now, watched it before but i love doc's so xD

  • WTF huge screen...

  • HOLY SHIT big screen.

  • nice vid...thanks

  • I don't think it's them..... I think it's the new youtube advertising. Look at the video it's 46 minutes long, and I think youtube wants money for thier space.
