Hey everyone - I was one of the editors of this amazing movie, directed by an all-star group of documentary filmmakers - opens October 1st - check it out!
It looks like it's just repeating what's in the book. I hope they have something that wasn't in the book otherwise there is no point in seeing it if it's going to tell me something I already know.
@iMoeKingg That's not ironic, that's just a coincidence. For something to be ironic there has to be a situation where the exact or near opposite of what is expected occurs. The Wikipedia definition states it concisely: "a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results when enlivened by perverse appropriateness." What you see in this trailer is not that.
honestly who asks a kid if money can buy u happiness? I bet the parents barely spend anytime with him, he doesn't give a damn of how the parents earn it and cares only about the thing he can get. Also wtf about Black people and white people are very different. Look through out thousands of years the human race has split up migrating to different countries and what not. Let me just say this, we all have 2 eye, 1 mouth, 2 ears, 2 leg, 2 arms. Another thing we all have in common is survival.
@MillyPopa Money can indeed buy happiness if you know what to spend it on. Sure a ton of toys buys false happiness, but having enough money to spend quality time with your children instead of working a multitude of jobs and coming home drained . With enough money to circle the globe together to learn & experience other cultures can indeed buy happiness. Having enough money to live in a house filled with books & enough money to provide your kids with quality food can make one very happy indeed
@ayumikoshiro Money cannot buy you a loving family to spend time with or circle the globe with or provide a house filled with books for. The things that make most people truly happy in life (such as finding true love or having a healthy child) are things that cannot be bought.
My friend was brought up with stimulating books, good food and excellent parenting by working class parents. Money is only useful to a point, happiness at it's core is a talent, not a thing.
@ayumikoshiro You are confusing necessary and sufficient conditions. A certain minimum standard of living (and, therefore, a certain minimum level of material wealth) may be necessary to achieve happiness, but material wealth in itself is not sufficient for happiness. You will not be happy if you are able to spend time with your children but you have an angry and impatient mind; nor will you be happy if you can travel the world yet you are close-mined, prejudiced and fearful.
@yallip1 I don't think that ayu is confusing these terms. I think you misunderstood the point that she was trying to make. Ayu was not saying that happiness is not dependant on perception, as it seems you are incinuating. Ayu was just giving hypothetical examples of situations where money, really can bring someone happiness.
@Theinnocentbot I understood her comment in exactly the same way as you. Though the confusion here might be an issue of semantics, I fear that her choice of words is reflective of a deeper misconception. She stated that "money can indeed buy happiness if you know what to spend it on." I am saying that money can only buy the conditions necessary for the attainment of happiness, rather than buying happiness itself. Ultimately, it is not money that brings you happiness but your state of mind.
Dunno bout you, but I am SO looking forward to being spoon-fed 'unconventional' factoids by 'rogue economists' and self-important journalists with bad haircuts. With music by MOBY!!!
Protip: if you're excited by this, please kill yourself.
