Nikon has better auto focusing with its 11 AF points compared to 600Ds 9 AF, and better low light ISO performance

600D has the edge in video mode, that's about it.

i'm new to DSLR's and found your line of video's and have watched quite a few. I think I've decided on a T3i and a friend on the D5100. My question is about weather sealing? I don't plan to submerge it but have two middle school boys who play plenty of outdoor sports. I live in NE USA and would like to be able to take it out in the mist and drizzle without worry. Are these suitable or do I have to go up in model lines?

People wanting the 600D may be better off getting the Canon 550D. It has the exact image sensor, and is basically the same camera minus the swivel screen. The swivel is a big bonus for video work, but like I mentioned, if you really care about good video, get a video camera, which will be then the dslr. The 550D is now a fraction of the price of the 600D, and you're not really loosing much other than the swivel and a few small details.

Continued. DSLRs are for the ability to take good photos, and their flexibility with lenses, so on this fact alone the Nikon wins out. The D5100 has the same sensor as the Nikon D7000, so you're basically getting the same image quality at a fraction of the price. This difference in image quality may not be a big issue with the intended target audience, but it will matter to people are working in fine detail. The D5100 is for people who need/care about image quality, Canon is for video quality.

As stated below, Nikon has better sharpness, this is due to it's larger sensor compared to Canon's. Canon tries to stuff 18MP into a smaller sensor which actually shrinks the amount of light captured. Canon also has more aberration, where it's hardly visible on the Nikon under the same settings. Nikon also has 50% more battery life in comparison, and a sharper kit lens. The real only reason to get the Canon over the Nikon is for better video, but if you want good video, get a video camera

@khallidwageningen They are totally different types of cameras. The 600D is a DSLR which has a mirror that direct slight from the lens to an optical viewfinder. The Nex5 is has no mirror, so no viewfinder so it's like using live-view only with a DSLR because you have to look at the LCD display in order to see what you are about to shoot. The Nex5 is basically a highly upgraded P&S w an interchangable lens option. I suggest researching and find a list of pros & cons of dslrs and mirroless cameras

Wow, whatever happened to the photographer being more important than the gear being used? Either of these cameras is great for beginning photography. Little things like chromatic aberrations can be fixed in post anyways.

I had a Nikon D3100 (fabulous camera), but returned it for a Canon 550D. Why? It worked better for ME.

The continuous autofocus during videos of the Nikon D5100 isn't really great, you better turn it off anyway...

You better focus before you start filming and then you should either try to avoid having to focus or to focus manually, of course if really necessary you can also focus (certainly the same with the Canon) by pressing the shutter release button.

I have to say the Canon pictures look a lot better, I almost want to sell my Nikon and buy a canon. Mind you almost, nikon performs so much better at higher ISO's and it's not just this model, it's almost every model. Nikon also has better flash calibration and the buttons are more intuitively placed. The lens quality is also unparalleled, as nikon makes the best and most expensive microscopes in the world and they have a whole industry based on glass.

@Octavian88mtl canon's L lens blows nikons apart. and L lens have uber fast apertures. which means in low light you wouldnt be using high ISOs anyway, which is exactly why not many people talk about ISOs.

@PigsArseifyYou Sounds like you're a canon user. I've used both and while they're both good systems nikon definitely wins in terms of quality. Canon won the race in the 90's because their AF system was a lot faster and because people invest in lenses a lot haven't gone back. However nikon glass is simply amazing, you can check out nikonprecision if you want. They make a lot more than cameras and they're world renowned for their accuracy and precision, often beating zeiss and leitz.

I have both the T3i (600D) and the 5100. Both are great cameras. I do like the fact that the Canon T3i (600D) uses your standard USB cable whereas the Nikon uses its special USB cable. That I didn't like. I travel a lot and if I use the Nikon camera and I forgot my Nikon USB cable I am screwed. That's why I like the Canon. I forget the cable, no problem, I can use the same cable for my laptop external drive USB cable. The T3i (600D) takes better videos.

@VladPayne You'd mentioned that you would hate to rotate the LCD screen every time you took the camera out. Just leave the LCD screen facing out like any digital camera. It is no big deal. The rotate screen only comes in useful if you plan to video yourself for YouTube or making tutorial videos where you want to be able to see yourself while video taping. So if you upgrade in the future you may want to reconsider.
