Unfortunately, not only did this version NOT follow the original end, but it was utterly VULGAR in places, where the original asks us to assume certain things, this version hands us TOO much about Mildred's sex life. And I mean TOO much!
@MrsWLeach can you tell me how the novel ends? does it explain more about veda? i can only explain her behaviour as sociopathic. seriously WHAT was going on with that girl?
@samanthak2205 Hi! Unfortunately, I've never read the novel, but according to the original movie, with Joan Crawford, Veda kills Monty Barrigan when he tells her that he'd never marry her. The first movie opened with Mildred in the police station. She was gonna take the blame for the murder. You probably nailed it. But the most simple term is that she was a BIG TIME SPOILED BRAT!!!! She was utterly GREEDY and did what she could to get what she wanted!
@tripjet999 Good point. I don't think so. In the original, there was smoking, and they wanted to give a genuine feel of the 40's. But in 1940's movies, the sex was ASSUMED, not shown. And definitely NOT in such detail. But this was HBO, the same network that gave us The Sopranos, so it's pretty much No Holds Barred as far as what's shown. Sex, smoking, the lot!
This was BRILLIANT! I just watched all 5 episodes. no wonder Kate won an award for this. She, and the two girls who played Veda and also Mare Winningham were amazing!
@MrsWLeach The action of Cain's original novel—and the Haynes/HBO miniseries—begins at the onset of the Great Depression. The book, though unspecific, probably spans the next decade...at least until the end of the 30s, maybe the early 40s. The US involvement in WW2 would not have started. In the Joan Crawford film, the action was updated to the time the film was made—post-WW2.
i love mildred pierce on HBO version, eventhough i didnt watch mildred pierce on hollywood version back in 45, but i saw the trailer and read the synopsis on imdb. at the end of the story theres should be shoot-ing act when Veda literally shot Monte and he died. i thought that was dramatic.
but in HBO version, eventhough there no shooting action at the end of episode, i felt how suffer but strong, Mildred is. and really tough woman.
Kate Winslet i always adore u and u are a great actress.
This show was really amazing! i caught it at episode 4 and thot it was kinda cool. then later i found out that it was an ol 1940's movie and i watched and i thot "wat a kewl old movie" its a really good story! i think tha shows an movies set in the 20s & 30s are popular now cuz the US then is very similar to the US now. The US was goin thru a lota changes in technology and ideas jus like 2day!
The only bad thing about Mildred Pierce is that it's over. I couldn't get enough! It was 100% incredible, and this making-of made it 10 times more incredible! This was my first HBO miniseries but i'm about to go back and watch a whole lot more now.
i'm a 19 year old fan of the whole mildred pierce history, i have the book since i'm 9, and i'm a huge fan of crawford and 1945 film, but this one, just takes the cake, so close to the book, the relationship between veda & mildred it's insane, the more sexual tone of mildred in this one, i love how real and human those characters are. I waited like crazy week after week the 5 episodes, i just finished watching them, number one fan here.
This series was so good they really need to create an award for it. Visually, it was a great opportunity to showcase the rich designs of the 1930s and they did it brilliantly. The writing and acting are unparalleled!
Love it ,Love it ,my mother used to see the old version but this is the one ho represent that time and today too, Kate is Mildred Great for this great picture.
11:53 CHICKEN & WAFFLES! I thought that was strictly "soul food" from the 70s but just looked it up and found out that's what the original restaurant was in the book. Even the Pennsylvania Dutch have a version of Chicken and Waffles.
I'm psyched for this to come out. Kate is such a phenomenal actress, and I know she'll shine through with this tremendously. She's truly one of our most talented actresses now, and every film/mini-series she does is simply gold. Even back to her first and last mini-series Dark Season (worth watching on Youtube), when her acting wasn't up to par, she was still great in it.
I can't wait until this comes out! I love the 1945 version but this is gonna be truer to the book.! I would love for HBO to do a mini series of Gone with the Wind that is completely true to the book. I absolutely adore the 1939 version, but the only way I could handle any remake of it would be a mini series which would show the ENTIRE book including all the children Scarlett has.
Mildred in the chicken house was hilarious XD

Should have left out all use of the tobacco drug. People go to the bathroom, too, but they didn't show any of THAT, did they?

Ms. Vachon! Shame on you a little...there was no war going on during the time period in which the novel takes place. Maybe in Spain...?
disneylandman66 6 months ago
@disneylandman66 Wasn't it the 40's? Unless it was '45 or after, WW2 was going on.

I know this shouldn't annoy me so much, but it does. I don't like people referring to a mini-series as a movie

@gmk0607 You should listen to her sing "What If" from "A Christmas Carol". She did that several years ago so she already is a singer
