In Germany they found out that the cash for clinkers cars there were secretly exported - literally cash for clunkers. The whole thing seems rather political anyhow... I hate to see waste.
There's poor people out there who actually need cars like this nice red Lincoln that these jackass dealers destroyed. Cars that still have a sufficient amount of life left in them should be fixed and retrofitted with E-85 Flex Fuel conversion kits. Those cars that have a severely damaged body, are the ones that need to be crushed and recycled. I dropped the catalytic converters and retrofitted my 1995 Ford Thunderbird's 4.6L OHC V8 engine to run on E-85. My car has never been so powerful.

As a Political Science major in college I'm interested in others theories, and, of course, broadening my knowledge...but, as they say, we are here on the front lines, in southern California, (one of the worst hit states with not only house foreclosures, but unemployment also) and I've seen so many dealerships doors completely closing putting everyone out of work and on to unemployment.

Speaking for only this CHEVY dealer (since that's what I know about) the Cash 4 Clunkers program has brought in a lot of customers who bought a lot of new AMERICAN cars. People who work for new car dealers have been hit very hard in this crapy economy (especially in California). So anything that brings in business, keeps the dealerships open and AMERICANS actually working, is a good idea.
My parents own 2 Ford products a 92 Lincoln Towncar similar to this being destroyed and a 97 Mercury Gran Marquis... both have the 4.6 engines NEVER a issue with either car. BOTH have been flawless and STILL run absolutely perfect so take your rice burners and take them back to China. CASH FOR CLUNKERS SUCKS... WHAT A STUPID PROGRAM!
i agree. except im a chevy man, well at least PRE-GOVERNMENT MOTORS. everything i own was made before the government takeover of GM. i have a 1989 chevy camaro with a 350 tbi swap. it has 175K on the odometer. the original engine was a 305 and had 173K on it, still ran good. in fact i sold the old engine. i also have a 91 cavalier that has been nearly issue free. 145K on that one. they really dont make them like the used to. doesnt matter what brand, they all were good back then
