It's kind of amazing when you stop and realize that over fifty years after the fact you are sitting here watching Julie over and over again. How did nature ever get that much woman into one person? I don't think there is any question that natural female pulchritude reached it's zenith during the 1945-75 time period. The likes of Julie, Sophia Loren, Anne Margaret, Raquel Welch, et al. will likely never be repeated.
Thanks Catgirl6. And if you look at that same group with Valerie you'll see in the red checks with her hair up in ponytails a very young Beth Howland, who later played Vera on TV's "Alice".
I guess it's a possibility, but my guess is that it is sheer coincidence. Bettie Page is merely the most well-known 50s model of the contemporary era, but the outfit she wears was fairly common attire amongst cheesecake models of the day.
julie newmar is stupefyin' jones--okay?she was also catwoman on the old batman tv show--leslie parrish in so sweet and vunerable--earthquake mcgoon sickens her--lil abner is a goodlooking idiot--she need her a rugged looking man to love her --not no pretty boy like lil abner who will break her heart with his dumb ass
i think richard boone would have been just right for lesliie parrish lovely ass-cause she ended up marrying a man with the same initials as him--a r.b. --richard bach author of a book called jonathan livingston seagull-still-it is interesting to wonder--boone would have treated her lovely behind like a queen--they would have made pretty babies together.
I don't mean to be rude, but the answer to this question is covered in some detail in the "More info" section. That's the section that screams out to people to read it - obviously to no purpose.
Wow, Julie Newmar really is stupefyin' in this. I remember seeing this years ago on late night television and ran into it serendipitously while surfing. Nice find.
Sorry, I missed this question. The sexiest dance number from the 1950s that I know of is Debra Paget's near-nude thrusting and writhing in the temple dance sequence from Fritz Lang's "The Indian Tomb" (1959). It's on Youtube of course.
The great Hollywood columnist James Bacon once aptly described Julie Newmar as "the most beautiful big girl the movies have ever seen". Hard to argue that after watching this.
By the way, anyone know who played Apassionata Von Climax on Broadway? That's right-another 60's sex icon-Tina Louise. Only wish she had done the movie version as well.
He was shooting "Don't Give Up The Ship on an adjoining sound stage, and he only agreed to shoot a brief cameo scene for this movie IF he would be "uncredited".
Stella Stevens was a dish, but why would she need to be so here with voluptuous and leggy Julie Newmar on the scene as Stupefyin' Jones? And if you look carefully, you'll see a young Valerie Harper (wearing pigtails and an orange dress) and Beth Howland (Vera from the TV sitcom "Alice" in pink) among the chorus dancers.
no...there's a comma missing after "here," I think. "So" refers to "being a dish." Read it: Why would she need to be a dish here, with Newmar on the scene?
Wow, what a treat! I remember seeing this on the Broadway stage as a kid, but somehow never caught the film (or even knew that one existed). Must say that Stella Stevens looks disappointingly buttoned-down as Appassionata.
The film is a riot. Check it out on the stunningly beautiful Paramount DVD. And yes, this is not the film to watch for Stella Stevens eye candy. I recommend "Slaughter" (1972), with Jim Brown, in which all is revealed.
Wow, I haven't seen Lil' Abner since I was 14 I think. Thanks for posting; interesting series.

Obviously, no one reads the "PLEASE READ THIS" notice attached to this video ( top right). It contains a mini-biography of Julie Newmar.

Was it intentional that Julie Newmar was dressed a la Bettie Page?

Hi, Did you leave out a word from your comment, "but why would she need to be so (?) here with voluptous and leggy Julie Newmar".
What's the missing word? Conservative? Prudish? Restrained?

no...there's a comma missing after "here," I think. "So" refers to "being a dish." Read it: Why would she need to be a dish here, with Newmar on the scene?
