That did not occur. The movie was basically just jumping from one foreshadow to the next, which is the extreme opposite of what you're propositioning.

You COULD argue that he doesn't cause it, only instigate a role in it, but that's still CAUSING it. You could even say that he's not a new character, but if you ask me, donnie's Frank is a preminition, whereas the one that runs over gretchen is the actual frank, and entirely new character.

When one wears a suit, the person is not the actual thing that he is pretending to be. The line signifies that Donnie is not human, and that can be taken in many different ways.
