I heard the tarp idea is to keep water from flowing thru the radiator and fan. The fan blades can bend while spinning in the water damaging the radiator.
You've all got bars.... TARP 'EM! A snorkel won't stop the water actually getting into your engine bay, which would be especially shite for those people running a (AHEM) petrol 4wd.
The description of this video is all wrong. The Jeep would have been in the same situation as the defender if it was stock with no lift or snorkle. You could drive a GEO through that with a lift and snorkle.
@TheCaferocker Defender had a snorkel, it is on the left side as opposed to the right. Looks like it wasn't air tight. Whoops... you're right about the stock vehicle though. Doesn't matter what kind of rig you own. Submerge the air filter and you're hydro-locked all the same.
@pupleon DAMN REALLY!!! You guys in the UK get all the cool shit. But I did hear that we're going to get diesel JK's here in the USA real soon hopefully.
@delta599 hmmm yeah, i reckon the trooper was a diesel though? this shows nothing but bad prep. Devon 4x4's competition LR's are V8's and they'd cross that easy.
lol, the defender had already problems before it went into the water, plz use a proper one next time and do the test again, then it wont fail like this, i can make a jeep look rubbish too, by getting a very bad condition one and putting it in a mud hole and afterwards throwing a 10000 euro land rover in there =|
The reason for the defender stalling is one of 2 reasons the first is the distributer got wet or the snorkel wasn't sealed properly. And although I have nothing against Jeep's I feel a diesel Land rover with a sealed snorkel is better for wading. Please could u give me the location of where this is and is it a FORD in the road.
I'm a Ford guy, but always liked those jeeps. I buy Ford Super Dutys because they come with factory locking hubs, lever shift 4x4 engagement, and strong axles like Dana 60 up front. Those jeeps also come from the factory with good stuff. When I get some money I'll get a used jeep
sweetbilly, what on earth on you talking about? A light vehicle has NOTHING to do with weather it will roll or not. Wheelbase and vechicle height will. And since when do you drive a Unimog as a daily driver?!?!?!?! The brilliant thing about Jeep's are they can do that shit on the weekends, then drive to work all week, every week, for years on end. You're comparing apples to oranges. May as well say, jeeps are crap, my ATV can kick it's ass 4x4ing. Well duh!
Jeeps are shit for 4x4-ing cause they are too light, they roll too easily, but they are made for mud and water ...except they tend to float away when the water is too deep cause once again they are too light. I'd still take a land rover over a jeep any day just because of the weight distribution. But I'll take a Dodge over EVERYTHING ...except a Unimog. Those fuckers are bad ass but they're ugly as hell!!
Right off the lot, they are too light for serious water crossings, but think about it. Who is seriously going to try and cross the amazon in a stock jeep anyways? to get to the place these guys were at, theyd have to have modded 4x4s to begin with. I say go Jeep, but have fun with whatever you choose to wheel
If you really wanna do some 4x4'ing I say buy a Unimog, I've literally seen them climb over a 4 foot concrete wall and NONE of the tires left the ground ever. They are absolutely the Baddest 4x4's on the planet, bar none. EVERYTHING on those bad boys are factory sealed to prevent water infiltration. All the trucks in this vid prolly had to have the oil changed in the diffy after crossing this stream. People never think about changing their dif oil cause of water but it will fuck ur truck up.
A lot of peeps take their jeeps 4x4ing over here in Moab they roll them all the time. Watch the roll over videos here on YouTube most are Jeeps. People come over from Denver Salt lake or from Cali and think they can just go out and go anywhere in those things, they just don't understand that jeeps aren't really made for rough 4x4ing like that. Early 40 dodges, Unimogs are the best Chevy and fords are ok too because they are fairly heavy vehicles. The heavier the vehicle the better
Another bad thing about jeeps is that their gear ratios are too high for 4 wheeling, the lower the ratio the better. The gear ratio in my Dodge, i have an older ram, is so low when I go hunting I can actually get out of my truck and walk in front of it, it can literally drive itself uphill while idling. Maybe one day I'll put a snorkel in my truck just for fun :P
first the reasn for rollovers has nothing to do with jeep being light its wheelbase....thats why ya run a stinger if you doin stuff that has the possibility of goin end over end
secondly my 4.0L Auto XJ has the same gearing as a 2nd gen dodge 1500 and my 6cyl puts out the same torque ratings as the 318 in the same dodge
plus lets not forget the fact that when i go hunting my jeep with go way farther then your fullsize dodge if i take an animal down way up in the bush chances are better that i can drive to it then your dodge
as for water in diffs if ya seal them and vent them properly ya wont have to many problems
but in the end jeep was the first 4wd pickup and thats all that counts
jeep is the pioneer in 4wd sure they have gone down hill in recent years but the old ones are unstoppable
Thats what a land rover is pretty much built for extreme offroad lol, im pretty sure stock vrs stock a land rover would wreck a jeep, although the older jeeps were great
that would be interesting to see, Jeep vs LR all stock. If u like those older Jeeps tho, check out my friends, its a 70's pickup/cherokee, its a monster I can send u the vid if u want, otherwise it's in my top vids.
Those defender are so expensive. If I going to i would want to do it in something cheap like the trooper.

what are all the modifications that would have to be made to the average (gas) 4x4 SUV to go hood-deep in water? how about for a 4x4 diesel SUV?

Not 100% sure (I'm a LR fan) but doesn't the Jeep have a 6 cyl motor though?? Maybe it stole some from the Rover lol
spk197 2 years ago
you could get three options with the jeep, 2.5 turbo diesel, 4.0 straight 6 and a v8
pupleon 2 years ago
The TJ Wrangler model in the video only came with the little straight 4 or the famous 4.0 straight 6 but it never had the diesel or V8 option.
TheCaferocker 2 years ago
that mabe the case in the usa, but in the uk it was available with the 2.5 turbo diesel
