I learned about Plath when a professor I had (one I did not like)- skipped her in the anthology b/c she said Plath had no talent. What troubles me so much is sometimes, I question if people treasure her poetry or just the suicide. Every video I view- people discuss her suicide NOT her poetry.I do think Hughes contributed to her death as she was very apparently in a bipolar DOWN..I don't think she would want to be remembered for her death.
Of course, NOT one of us knew her- just a thought.
I know she was a gifted poet and tormented person but I've little heard anybody barefacedly challenging her humanity for commiting suicide while her kids are sleeping in the room next door.
I have a question. In school, was Sylvia Plath not "accepted"? Meaning she was sort-of an outcast? Or not have many friends. I learned about her in school last year, and was always curious if it was legit. Thanks in advanced!
the fact that he didn't marry the woman he left sylvia for, doesn't change the fact that she killed herself after being with him for a number of years.

Yeah, they were togethe, but the were NOT married! Sorry, but I'm just setting the facts straight! I don't think it's meaningless, it's just a fact!
And, sorry, but you don't know how extactly Ted Hughes was treating women! I'm definitely not a Hughes fan and I'm not taking blindly his side, but I think it's ridiculous to assume we know everything!!
I suggest, you read Assia's biography "Lover of Unreason".
she dreamt of monroe and miller visiting her and ted.
her subconscious was warning her of betrayal and destruction.
every fake feminist jumped on the bandwaggon to defend hughes, despite the fact that his second wife killed herself too and that he was a typical giant toddler husband that sunk sylvia in crushing domesticity.
if you're a brilliant American artist who happens to be pro-civil rights, they will find greedy jealous rats to tear your name and talent apart...for money.
Ted Hughes's SECOND WIFE didn't kill herself!!! She is still alive and her name is Carol (Orchard) Hughes! If you are talking about Assia Wevill, she killed herself, that's true, but she was never married to Ted.
God, I wish peole could have the facts straight, instead of sprading wrong informations!
Well, I've adored her since I came across her works many years ago in a local library. Every time I read Lady Lazarus I'm overwhelmed by her passion, wisdom, insight, inteligence, grief, love, and desperation and by her unbelievable talent. As a great aficionado of literature and a poet myself (not matching Sylvia at all) publishing at times I recently translated the poem into Polish, and posted it on my literary blog. R.I.P Sylvia.
Thank you so much for posting this. Sylvia Plath is the greatest Poet ever. Before I read it, I just was not very fond of poetry, after knowing her unique art, poetry has become an obsession to me.
I adore Al.Algarev's book "The Savage God", which contains an insightful chapter on the life of Sylvia as a poet and about her suicide. It's an amazing book and has opened my eyes to a new sort of world that has lived seperate to my world. Thank you for posting this important documentary :)

This world is mad and depraved
Not much will be saved
So why'd you go and jump the gun?
If I was Ted we would've had fun
Did you hear a word that I just said?
Things would've been different if I was Ted.........

'Documentary from the 90's'? No! Sylvia Plath died in 1963, and the voice over said she died 'last week', so it must have been made in 1963! :)

@t3331157 The recording of the voice is from 1963. They didn't have the now-crude then-awesome video effects in the 60's...

I like Plath's work, all we need to do is ban women from ever reading it.
Some of their hyperbole is ridiculous. 'Greatest poet ever'? Not even of her decade.
TenWhoWereTaken 7 months ago
That would be uncouth or something.

When you're sick enough to consider suicide, you're not much thinking of humanities.

@UptownThriftStore
Or like lots of suicides she had strong melancholic as well as narcissistic tendencies.

As you can tell by reading her work, she was extraordinarily self-absorbed. Sylvia seldom thought about anyone other than Sylvia.

anolta,
no thanks on that suggestion, as i'm not a bimbo chaser.
my interest in plath and her life is related to poetry and her great talent, as well as her political intelligence.
