I have a snapping turtle that looks like yours kinda,I thought it was an alligator turtle but then I got corrected. Anyways my ? is its in a 100 gallon tank where should the water level be should it be where he can stretch his neck to get air or is it ok for him to swim up to get air?
@legallatin1 Yes you should have to where it doesnt have to strain its neck to get air but if you have rocks and driftwood where it can sit on it should be fine if you have it half way deep. Mine never basks so everything I have is mostly underwater. Check out my other vids so you can see what im talking about.
water isnt too high, you have a little shallow water set up that looks perfect.. but i noticed you saying "she" to me it looks like a male, it has long claws which is used to latch on to the females, i have i female snapper and her claws are much shorter, another way to tell is to look on the tail the slit will be about an inch past the shell for the females and about 2 inches for the males
very nice tank, i have a snapping turtle as well and he just LOVES to play in the bubbles, whenever hes not hunting rosies he's playing in the bubbles loll & idk if a oscar would work to good, i tried adding some fish other then feeders but after about a week they ended up being the prey..
@gymnist2 yea I know now not to waste money, but I got one red eye sunfish from about 5 in the tank that lives there now. He's too quick and I think monster is scared of its fins. Check out my other vids
@gymnist2 the sunfish I got have been in there for a while, I try to feed my turtle so it doesnt have to be too hungry where it will hunt the fish but it still always tries
@dcCamba8 Wow, I give a helpful suggestion and you respond like a preteen with a hormonal imbalance. GROW UP. And until you learn to have some respect for the animals in your care, the least you can do is have the compassion to pass them on to a more intelligent person who will at least meet their basic care requirements.
@dcCamba8 thats a beast of a turtle, i think he should be able to swim to to the plat form lol all it needs is that top area to get away from the bubbles and get dry, thats a massive tank :)
@dcCamba8 How do you handle snappers while they're swimming in water? I mean picking snappers up by the tail hurts them. It's claimed that snappers can reach your fingers even if you are holding them by the sides.
@dcCamba8 common snappers average out around 20", i've caught snappers well over 30+ lbs, and some have been known to weigh over 70 lbs. that 125 wont last very long unless you want an unhappy turtle. it's best if you know someone who has a large pond for it to live in. best of luck.
@mari7750 Looked online and got one shipped to me. Ive been doing it for over ten years. I used to order Alligator Snappers too but I prefer Common, they are more active and much more fun to observe.
Nice tank. A sump filter would be the most efficient way to filter that tank, you can make one yourself for about 100 to 150 bucks plus you can put the water heater in the sump so your turtle won't bite it like mine did
Looks sick man..i cant wait till i get a big ass aquarium when my turtle grows up..really nice setup and th ebubbler looks great in every aquarium and glad she likes it
i have a decent sized Tilapia that has lived with my snapper for a year now hes never attacked it cause there so aggressive and my snapper is twice as big as yours but if the fish are bout same size or bigger and aggressive the snapper wont mess with em prolly ive had big bass and carp but there dumb and non aggressive so he eats them
I will not put Oscars in because after seeing how fast the crayfish and feeder fish went I know that Oscars wouldnt last very long. Ill look into getting other fish like African Cichilds and any other anyone recomends. I aso want to put moss, plants, large rocks, and wood for cover and decorations. Which will all get updated
I thought it was a female because it was non agressive when growing up but now im seeing that is changing as it grows, so I will look into its sex.
Also i agree with xarr0wsx as you should not put Oscars in with the snapping turtle. I had two Oscars and both were devoured rather quickly. What i have found to work are African cichlids they seem to be to fast for the turtles. Nice setup though and your turtle looks very healthy!
Are you sure this snapper is female? from the research ive done the anus is further down on the tail like yours if its a male and close to the base of the tail like mine if its female.
wow nice! i got my snapper a 125g tank also, hes a little bigger than hatchling tho, he loves it, i heard your puting oscars, DONT DO IT AT ALL, only if you want them for breakfeast for your MONSTER. even tho a oscar is a little to big, tho snappers are curious and WILL bite at it, and oscar will die sadly, only big fish i have are 6 pleco fishes, my snapper doesnt bother them at all.
Im no expert. . but im pretty sure that turtle has a dick.
