This is wonderful! All of these clips look like a full dress rehearsal - is that correct? I know there was a live telecast planned but it never happened due to a musician's strike. I attended the 1974 production in the SOH and it was one of my greatest nights at the opera. I never thought I would see it again. Thank You!
Correct on all acounts! This is from a dress rehearsal. There was a telecast planned but it never took place. It is a pity, at least there are some video records of Joan in this opera :)
A shame the quality on the video is poor (the unfortunate ravages of time... amazing how far we've come for recording), because it seems to really show how HUGE the voice was... she towers over that tenor, lol. Perhaps this is in Australia?
The French from all of them is unfortunately HORRIFIC in this - verging on farse... weird too, because Dame Joan was usually not too bad with the language.
I love getting to see this though, since it shows something other than her Olympia!
I LOVE Sutherland and my CD recording of this with her, and I'm SO happy to see this staged! THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!

I love her accent!
Almost Fledermauss, the Hungarian countess...ha ha.
Zsa Zsa Gabor....
The low timbre of her voice, and evil person Guilietta was...GREAT!!!!!!

She always had the quality for Giulietta.
More a bit of a mezzorole, but suited La Stupenda like a glove.
Indeed a huge voice, but always...lovely as Joan!
Hail La Stupenda!!!!!

Yes - it is in Australia and, while we are being pedantic, the diction is superior to your spelling: "farce" not "farse".

Great video, who is the tenor?
TheAleph74 4 years ago
The tenor is Anson Austin a New Zelander that sung with The Australian Opera for many years.
The Dapertutto is Gregory Yurisich.
I was lucky to have seen Dame Joan do this opera a few times, she was the only soprano to have coped with the low tessitura of Giulietta.
