@ProddyRyan Since the early 19th century, military drummers and buglers wore the "inverse" uniform of the regular troops. In other words, the Marine musicians would wear red tunics instead of blue. The idea was to make them look different and more visible than the fighting troops. The musicians were primarily used for signaling orders to the fighters via drum cadences and bugle calls. The "President's Own" Marine Band continues the tradition with the red uniforms.
nice , metered open rolls... its so hard to get some players to interpret the snare parts correctly.... but this is the way it was done and should be done.... always. thank you!
It has become a tradition that many marching bands --- from high school to military (both foreign and domestic) come marching into the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. to stand before the grave of the March King, John Philip Sousa, and play one or two of his pieces in honor of the true master of the musical genre.
My elementry school and all the other elementary schools in mount olive played this at our distric band concert I play alto sax but I didn't hear it in this one
Music like this sends goose bumps down my spine , what inspiration , Sousa was a genus. Too bad we don't have the talent to score more pieces like this today and by the way the marine band was first rate! bravo!
@Live4Flute4Ever Yes, Sousa no doubt wrote the part for piccolo and flute. Since this band is a scaled down version of the President's Own, no flutes are marching and only the piccolo part is covered.
@vaq33ens Oh, alright! The day before break my director breaks the news that that's what we're going to start this piece next week. And I just switched over to piccolo like a week ago, so I'd really rather not have to play this on flute because I'm still having quite a difficulty at switching from each one quickly....
as Bands go, I don't think it gets any better than the Marine Band. the one at 8th & I. (I think that's the designation). USMC 69-70 72-76 Al Hail The Marine Band, Semper Fi guys. May God BLess America and The COrps.
There paying for the long since past John Philip Sousa who wasa famous leader of the marine band and composed many famous american marches such as stars and stripes forever, on his birthday
nice military music!

I don't understand. They always wear red.
newyearjew 3 weeks ago
Just a quick question... Why are they wearing red tunics apposed to their normal blues?

@JeffHaney1224 That's a statement that embodies the sentiment of "duh." It was the celebration of Sousa's birthday.

I liked my old high school band's rendition better with the Bennett arrangement. the dynamics were better,& the drums finished with a 7 stroke roll!

im supposing that they are playing for a fallen comrade due to the fact that they are in a cemetery

@TheBetterGuy999 That comrade is one John Philip Sousa, who never knew any of the band members.
