  • @drummerman558 : It seems IMHO to be about artistic choice rather than mere ability, as he has turned his sticks upside down, *and* (at least here) is using a metal snare drum. :)

  • Roy Haynes is one of the greatest drummers in history, but he has definitely lost his touch with his age. I feel like everything I hear from him lately is too loud and uncontrolled. He used to have such an amazing gentle touch and still be able to play unbelievably fast. But i suppose it is just to be expected with age. I certainly wont be able to do anything like that when i'm 80.

  • born to swing

  • Roy's playing here is percussively obnoxious. Intrusive, loud and patently unmusical.

    Undignified for a Jazz master.

  • hay que tener mucho huevo o ser un pobre tipo para ponerle pulgar abajo a roy eh?

    go roy go!!!

  • gotta love this kind of raw playing.. Roy doesnt give a flying F about finesse.. just lays it down.. its weird. refined yet bordering on sloppy.. hard to explain. the passion and knowledge of the music is evident throughout

  • How old is Roy Haynes here?

From his appearance and the energy with which he plays, I'd say... late 40s?

  • @SAHBfan He's around 80.

  • vídeo q

  • Jazz sounds like 5 people playing a differnt song, 5 people who think they are God's gift to the music world that is!

  • @faithycoins All these men were making a living and recording music when you were still in your father's balls. You are a stupid kid with nothing to offer.

  • this rly is alot of noise... could be so much more.. not bad, but could be so much better... jazzpictures you should put the effort you put into criticisms into something worthwhile, doesn't do much to waste your thoughts and efforts on constructing "intelligent" criticisms of some random person on an online video message board.

  • @botabatiki

"alot" is not a word, and never has been. It's two words. A lot.

  • He has good left-foot-work! ;)

  • where have this been all my life!!

  • The rythm is above good, but sadly it's too noisy! Mr. Haynes your'e better than this!

  • interesting how he has his shells set up - snare, floor tom, rack toms all on the same plane.

  • I kind of dig it, it makes sense. That leaves no rim or surface sticking up (or too far down). It's like a forerunner to some of todays drummers that think all drums have to be ruler flat (uncomfortable for me.)

  • i love you roy hanes!

  • hes amazaing!

  • i have his signature drumstick ^^

  • Holy ear wax Batman, I don't see ear plugs.

At 85 Haynes be play'n pro for 55 years, tell me no hearing loss?

  • I caught him at modern drummer 2005. Never heard of him before he walked out onstage. He was celebrating his 80th birthday, been playing professionally since 1945, and he is easily the coolest cat i have ever seen. It just radiated out of him. Amazing swing in his ride and feel.

  • is this snare ludwig brass?

  • Hi, I would think it's his signiture Yamaha snare, it's copper

  • Definetly his signature snare.

  • hahahahahaha i saw him not too long ago and my friend and i were trying to figure out if he was being either really groovy in his playing or just dropping beats all over the place.....i think its a little of both

  • you must be kidding.. RH does not 'drop' beats

  • @groupieoftheyear you are a tit. talking of dropping beats..... were you dropped on your head when you were a child?

  • @groupieoftheyear NOT a little of both, man this is Roy Haynes, not some drummer in your garage. He is on it 100%

  • @groupieoftheyear My answer comprises two parts: 1.Yes, he was being really groovy, as only the great Roy Haynes can.

    2. You may wish to take some introductory music lessons, so that you can become better acquainted with the basic principles of music ( e.g. beat, meter, rhythm, and melody.)

    Good luck:)

  • i've know Haynes during the question and answer tour; he's one of the greatest genius in drums, modern every age he passed iwith his drumming

  • Does Roy Haynes know how to play drums?... HELL'S YEAH!!!! you should here him play 4 john coltrane in '63...Awsome!!!.. I'm kinda suprised to see him playing yamaha drum's!.. It doesn't matter, keep playing Roy, show us how it's done!

  • yeah me too...maybe it was just a kit that was there for him for he gig?, he has his flat top ride though!

  • he endorses yamaha drums...

  • the years behind every stroke, truly incredible, best jazz drummer alive!

  • the years behind every stroke...

  • david rocks :)

  • great drummer love his excessive hard hitting crashes...this guy got soul in his beats

  • wow.. roy haynes makes the worst recording sound like gold... his persicion is fucking amazing... long live roy... hahaha...

  • It's not over until it's over - with Roy Haynes it will never be over!

  • Best drummer ever

  • okay, i dont mean to be harsh cos i know hes a great, i can see that he could have once been great, but i dont see it here.

probs cos i havnt matured enough as a drummer and musician...

also, what kind of jazz would you call this??

  • OK, let's straighten this out right about NOW. This is called 'straight-ahead' style jazz. He STILL is great, don't let a distorted/low-fi recording fool you. He's totally cooking here and I've never seen him NOT cook, even on a subtle, soft ballad. Nuff said. He's a master's master and he's totally undiminished even today, in his 80s.

  • lol

    cheers

    : P

  • it's all good Exile, just keep listening--there's nothing wrong with a little skepticism, anyway.

  • jazz is jazz. its just jazz man. and roys the man. aint nobody like roy. and hes the baddest cat on the planet, every one knows that. just keep listening and maybe youll hear it...

  • Your favorites is a rendition of "Round Midnight" by Thelonious Monk. Roy Haynes is a major Innovator who played with Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Monk, Coltrane and many other greats. Jazz is progressive by nature and Haynes as progressed to encompass what you appreciate and more. Keep listening and hopefully you will progress beyond the safe haven of the familiar. Ask those you appreciate and they will probably set you straight. He's is a great to any jazz drummer worth his salt.

  • rite, kk.

just to let you know that my favourites are VERY incomplete....i dont really use youtube favouriting that much at all...

  • his snare drum technique and musicallity are soo impressive he deserve so much more praise then he recieves

  • So explosive, or effortless, so much widsom from the years of mastery. Roy is THE MAN. How about at 1:23.....BAAAAZAAM!!

  • My wife and I were both impressed with Roy Haynes when we saw him in Vancouver. Unbelievable talent!

  • nice,,,,,,, my heart belongs to daddy

  • To the "fans" whose comments have now been removed:

If you have no ears, no abilty to discern complex musicanship and no knowledge of the principles of bebop, swing or time, kindly refrain from comparing fellow musicians to one another in the disrespectful fashion that you have; especially the brilliant virtuosos you have made mention of. Your sophomoric commentary belies any legitimate interest you may have in the music and your uninformed remarks are unwelcome here.

  • well said

  • @jazzpictures YOU TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY

  • The eternal Roy haynes. What more can you say. The man is incendiary and ageless. He is 82 years young and still going strong. A great musical improviser and a master of over the bar line phrasing.

  • He is incredibly subtle these days. This is just one particulary smokin' interlude. Elvin used to play much more thrashy stuff. Sorry, you don't get it.

  • Sure is beating the hell out of that flat ride!!! It's meant to be played lightly.

  • Yeah, I'm sure Roy Haynes needs jazz drumming advice from some random internet person. LOL!

  • the camera is stuck up in the cymbals, I`m pretty shure Haynes balances it fine, the guy has toured with Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Parker (3 years) Dizzy Gillespie Pat Metheny Chick corea, list goes on

I`ve heard him twice , and thats been the two most inspirational concerts I`ve been to

  • Ignorance is bliss. I bet you're quite happy and pleased with yourself.

  • hes is so damn explosive..... this dude ages like wine...
