Annie Hall deserved it 100%. In true Allen style, the film was kept simple, but the gem was the writing, the characters, the acting, the simplicity, the wit, the humour, as well as the layers behind the screenplay. It's an incredible film. Star Wars is a great film too. But in my opinion does not trump Annie Hall.
Yes, “Annie Hall” deserved it. Great writing, great characters, great acting, and a great look at relationships. Plus, Woody Allen went on to create “Manhattan”, “Hannah and Her Sisters”, “Crimes and Misdemeanors”, etc.
“Star Wars” had good special effects for 1977, but really bad writing, bad acting, cardboard characters, and anyone who says Carrie Fisher is a better actor than Diane Keaton is a moron. Plus, George Lucas went on to do “Howard the Duck” and Jar Jar Binks.
I've seen Annie Hall. I thought the part where we read Annie's thoughts was funny. Star Wars is my favorite movie of all time. It's the most exciting movie. And it also has a sense of humor. Annie Hall was just okay.
If you are sensitive to the bittersweetness of relationships and the human condition, Annie Hall delivers. Star Wars is a classic hero's journey, and the cultural impact of Star Wars is clearly greater. However if I had to choose which film tells us more about ourselves, it's Annie Hall.
Of course Annie Hall deserved it, Star Wars had great moments but this and Manhattan are the reasons why Woody Allen is considered a genius. Personally, Star Wars doesn't even come close.
'Annie Hall' and 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' are to me the Allen films that hold up best. Allen was a real filmmaker of considerable wit and skill. 'Hall' is a masterpiece.
No comparison to the overblown video game by Goofy George.
"I'm into leather," "Nana hates Jews," "Alvie, you're an artist, so you'll understand . . . "
"I sound like FM radio." Jeez, it just goes on and on. Decades after this was produced, my wife and I still enjoy the hell out of it . . . it must be the eggs.
In fact, now that I'm thinking about it. The thing that I really enjoy most of all about Star Wars is remembering my childhood and its impact on my then. There's a lot of great stuff in the film, but that's my favorite thing about it.
Annie Hall is by far the better movie in almost every category except universal appeal. People from all ages and backgrounds can enjoy Star Wars, but most children are not going to like Annie Hall and feel its intended impact because they are too immature to fully understand and appreciate it. I would have totally said Star Wars had you asked me this question before I was say 20 years of age and could completely begin to fully appreciate all of the aspects Annie Hall has offered to the world.
@ptownpsjdlc I'm over 20. I study film. Annie Hall is very amusing, but Star Wars is the better movie. Star Wars is much more than just action figures. It's a highly influential motion picture. It enchanted me as a boy and it continues to inspire me in my adult years.
Exactly what innovations did Annie Hall establish? I'm obviously missing something. And yes, I have seen Annie Hall. The school memory interaction and cartoon segments were brilliant. But Star Wars is my favorite movie. That's not just because it's so entertaining. It's a part of my psyche. Even though the plot structure is an ancient archetype, it tells a story that is both compelling and moving.
@dtwhitney Thier would be no star wars if it not for 2001 a space odysee, Kubrick invented the modern sci fi not star wars, anni hall as invented the rom com and changed comedy forever
@dckitchen Have you even seen 2001? 2001 and Star Wars are two completely different movies. In fact, they're different in almost every aspect. Tone, pace, plot, music... The only thing they share is that they are both found in the "Sci-fi" section at Blockbuster video. You can't really put Star Wars in the same genre as 2001 just because they both happen to be set in space.
This is a wise decision from Oscars between 2 great movies.
Special effects are brilliant, but overall, they don't make the film itself better or much superior to others. Meanwhile, Annie Hall achieved the milestone of being one of the finest films without that.
gay... that belonged to star wars easily.... star wars inspired a generation and is still a legacy that lives on.... annie hall was way to typical for the oscars
"annie hall left no footprint" sorry, but that is a incredible ignorant statement. you obviously dont realize the impact annie hall has had and continues to have. The innovations debuted in annie hall are used over and over from "The Office" to "Pulp Fiction". it was innovative and creative and easily one of the most influential movis in the last 50 years. Star Wars was nothing more than the same old thing told with a new and exciting venue - outer space with new graphics. dialogue was old.
@JPCO85 i think hes presented the award more times than anyone. i forget how many, like aound ten. but look it up on wikipedia, on the Oscar for Best Picture page

Im a big Star Wars fan and think that it should win, but who cares? George Lucas got the last laugh by becoming 10 times richer than Woody Allen and Star Wars made 5 sequals, Annie Hall didnt even make one. Its not about the award, its about the quality of the film and the impact it has on people.
@iAndyi Yes, Annie Hall, the movie that influenced an entire generation, dramatically changed moviemaking forever, introduced a dozen unforgettable characters, and created a modern mythology....oh wait, that was the other one.
@jawsfan95 While The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi are both fantastic movies, it has very little to do with them being sequels. Aside from needing some information from the previous movies, these movies alone are still great films. Also, no one in their right mind can say that The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones were great movies. Sequels are not always good, and more importantly, there does not always have to be a sequel. Although Annie Hall 2 would kick ass I'm sure...

I know fanboy types get very agitated about Annie Hall trouncing Star Wars - but get a grip fellas, Annie Hall is a much better film. And it doesn't have any fucktarded prequels either!
Annie Hall, like most Allen films, is a piece of self-indulgent crap by an aging, perverted blowhard whose screenplays read like the grotesque fantasies of a hermit. He never got any girls when he was young, so in all his films he pairs himself w/ someone who he could never get w/out his fortune and his neurotic tendencies provide the comic relief, the only redeeming staple of his films.
@NirvanaFan4Life Nice try. He was 40 when he made this, and falling in love with his adopted daughter 17 years later doesn't make him a pervert then. This is the movie Allen made when he began to acknowledge his attractiveness to women despite being an urban neurotic, and this is proven by the fact that Diane Keaton's real name is Diane Hall, and that the movie parallells their own relationship. Many of his films do feature improbable pairings, esp the later ones, but not this one.
The best film he ever made was Hannah and Her Sisters, which is telling b/c it's one of the only early Allen films that doesn't shamelessly serve to stroke his overinflated ego, instead shifting the focus to the much more talented Michael Caine.
There is a story that in Annie Hall when they go to California and Woody gets sick he was supposed to give Charlie Chaplin his honorary Academy award. That is what he's talking about. Does anyone know if that's true. I thought I read that he couldn't go because he was filming a movie. Anyway if anyone knows let me know.
Annie Hall is as close to perfection as a movie can be. Wonderful writing acting, and the filmmaking is amazing. Star Wars had special effects but Annie Hall uses almost every other technique in moveis, from subtitles, split screen, animation etc. I was very happy when it won.
Rocky has touched the lives of so many people. Taxi Driver was a great film, but Rocky has inspired. I also b elieve the score by Bill Conti had a huge impact on the film winning.
Well the Lifetime channel inspires many lonely women, but that doesn't mean it is well done, that is, artistically valuable. Rocky is a good film, but not as good as Rocky. And Taxi Driver IS a good film, not was.
the academy loves crowd pleasing movies. forrest gump is a great movie. but pulp fiction is genius. the academy would never risk giving the award to pulp fiction. Its a crime
When i think of the film that should win the oscar for Best Picture of the Year, I think of a film that should stand out from all the others as an extraordinary work.
In 1977, one film did more than any other to advance the art of filmmaking by taking into bold and new directions.
One film was wildy innovative, and pushed the envelope of what cinema could do for a public GLOBAL conciousness.
Only one film gave birth to a modern mythology for the young.
I agree with you completely. Woody Allen was able to produce similar work throughout his life, but nothing like Star Wars will ever be replicated (well, maybe LOTR).
@vadimzdonutube Since when was the Best Picture Oscar = film that stands the test of time because of popularity and a tremendous amount of sequels + merchandise?
i'm a big star wars fan, yet i agree with the oscars giving annie hall all the award. i'm pretty sure that if staar wars was out a year later it would have win all the important awards
Annie Hall is a classic, as much as Star Wars is. But in no other context would people be talking about both these films... They're SO different. But you're not helping the reputation of Star Wars geeks by trashing Annie Hall. It may not be to your taste, but Star Wars is not my taste, yet I can still respect it. And people remember Annie Hall. It's simply false to state otherwise. EVERYONE quotes it. Dead sharks. The size of a buick. We need the eggs. Where's my mantra? CLASSIC!
History kind of has the last laugh, though. While Annie Hall is a great movie, I only knew about it initially because it happened to beat Star Wars, a movie I've seen millions of times, for the Best Picture Oscar. There are a few true classics beloved by everyone that won the award (Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, The Godfather I and II, Rocky, Forrest Gump, Titanic, Lord of the Rings, etc.), but for the most part, the films that win are forgotten about by the general public as time goes on.
we dont appreciate innovative movies till time has passed, Star Wars got snubbed b/c it was a sci fi movie but in fact it's not so sci fi, it's a story just like every other story with deep themes plot and character told in an incredible way
Annie Hall lacks in all these aspects, Woody Allen and Keaton were great but the plot and character were very shallow and monotonous, though highly entertaining even to this day
The movie is brilliant in that it portrays how most relationships that end well are looked upon with happy memory. Thematically, the film leans toward the notion that relationships aren't meant to be forever, but for a short while until you realize that your time is up. Not really a positive way to look at them, but the character Alvy personifies a skewed world view, and if Annie Hall doesn't ring true with you; you must be one of the lucky ones in a perfect relationship...
annie hall deserved the award. it's funny! its the last comedy to ever win best picture so it's not like a movie such as that wins every couple of years.
@bacardibum Shakespeare in Love is a comedy, and Forrest Gump and American Beauty have comedic parts. And it's not like movies like Star Wars ever even get nominated.
As much as I luvvvv Annie Hall and Woody, I am disappointed that Star Wars didn't win. In 30 years, I think Star Wars has proved to be more of a classic and a household name than Annie Hall. Still, both good movies.
I used to not get the big deal about Annie Hall for awhile until I rewatched it and now I totally get it and it's become one of my favorite films and I can watch it over and over. Sorry Star Wars fans but it's Annie Hall for me.
Yeah - Star Wars will always be perhaps the sentimental favorite for me, as I have watched it and loved it since I was a kid, but if I'm going to be honest I have to say that I think Annie Hall deserved the Oscar more.
Agreed. I'll add that Star Wars had the misfortune to made in an era (the 70's and 80's) when the Academy shut out pictures that hit huge at the box office and/or were not "serious drama" from winning any of the "big four" awards(best picture, director, lead actor, and lead actress).
Actually Star Wars just hit some bad luck. Had it been nominated any other year it would have won best picture, director, screenplay ect, but after about a bagillion nominations the Academy saw fit to give the oscar to Woody. Plus nobody could have predicted what kind of an influence it would come to have on today's culture.
woody allen is a great film maker denOnde, brilliantly witty, and discuss the complexities that relationships have very well. okay so he's not bergman, kielslowski, or herzog. but why compare them? allen and bergman's films discuss different aspects of life but i dont think one is more important than the other. there just different.
It's also an okay movie that has skyrocketed the career of a mediocre filmmaker to levels of legend, I almost throw up every time someone compares Allen to giants like Fellini or Ingmar Bergman.
oh stop being so pretentious we get it you took a film class at a nice community college annie hall is the only film i have ever seen that honestly portrays the reality you face when your relationship breaks down and it STILL made me laugh out loud throughout. Woody Allen films are a matter of taste you either love him or hate him but why compare him to Bergman??
To bad the Woodman wasn't there. He was hilarious at the Oscar's in 2002 while introducing a short film about New York filmakers (in a tribute to New York after 9/11).
Me too! As a kid I couldn't begin to understand how Annie Hall won over Star Wars. My friend's dad took us to see it at the Cine Capri in Arizona - huge curved screen; people lined up for hours.
After seeing it we got back in line and we waited several more hours to see it again! That movie changed everything.
I am older now & love Woody Allen's films. I'm a cultural historian, educated, well-read. But I still have that childhood emotional sense that it is totally wrong Star Wars didn't win.
choosing between annie hall and star wars...dear god. I don't think I could. that's like literally choosing between my childhood and adult life. i'd still probably give the oscar to star wars, though. just for the fact i always had awesome christmas presents because of it. ;)
Annie Hall deserved it 100%.

Annie Hall is a classic, but so is Star Wars
we dont appreciate innovative movies till time has passed, Star Wars got snubbed b/c it was a sci fi movie but in fact it's not so sci fi, it's a story just like every other story with deep themes plot and character told in an incredible way
Annie Hall lacks in all these aspects, Woody Allen and Keaton were great but the plot and character were very shallow and monotonous, though highly entertaining even to this day

The movie is brilliant in that it portrays how most relationships that end well are looked upon with happy memory. Thematically, the film leans toward the notion that relationships aren't meant to be forever, but for a short while until you realize that your time is up. Not really a positive way to look at them, but the character Alvy personifies a skewed world view, and if Annie Hall doesn't ring true with you; you must be one of the lucky ones in a perfect relationship...

annie hall deserved the award. it's funny! its the last comedy to ever win best picture so it's not like a movie such as that wins every couple of years.
bacardibum 3 years ago
Are you kidding me Star Wars was 10 times better and it changed the way people watch movies.
grievous1 3 years ago
Forest Gump won for Best Picture in 1994. A comedy in most regards.
MUhockey26 2 years ago
@bacardibum Shakespeare in Love is a comedy, and Forrest Gump and American Beauty have comedic parts. And it's not like movies like Star Wars ever even get nominated.

that movie was shit, Star Wars should've won by a long shot

As much as I luvvvv Annie Hall and Woody, I am disappointed that Star Wars didn't win. In 30 years, I think Star Wars has proved to be more of a classic and a household name than Annie Hall. Still, both good movies.

I used to not get the big deal about Annie Hall for awhile until I rewatched it and now I totally get it and it's become one of my favorite films and I can watch it over and over. Sorry Star Wars fans but it's Annie Hall for me.
Tigerlily21 3 years ago 3
Yeah - Star Wars will always be perhaps the sentimental favorite for me, as I have watched it and loved it since I was a kid, but if I'm going to be honest I have to say that I think Annie Hall deserved the Oscar more.

Unlike Star Wars, an instant classic, which several million people can rewatch again and again...? Biggest robbery ever seen at the Oscars
Shamq 3 years ago
Agreed. I'll add that Star Wars had the misfortune to made in an era (the 70's and 80's) when the Academy shut out pictures that hit huge at the box office and/or were not "serious drama" from winning any of the "big four" awards(best picture, director, lead actor, and lead actress).
ScrapyardApe 3 years ago
Actually Star Wars just hit some bad luck. Had it been nominated any other year it would have won best picture, director, screenplay ect, but after about a bagillion nominations the Academy saw fit to give the oscar to Woody. Plus nobody could have predicted what kind of an influence it would come to have on today's culture.
Malvegil93 3 years ago
This was actually his first movie to get any Oscar attention.

This is one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history, and I'm happy that Annie Hall won.

That guy who kind of looked disappointed was I think the producer of the movie "Julia".

woody allen is a great film maker denOnde, brilliantly witty, and discuss the complexities that relationships have very well. okay so he's not bergman, kielslowski, or herzog. but why compare them? allen and bergman's films discuss different aspects of life but i dont think one is more important than the other. there just different.
debevec12 3 years ago 3
It's also an okay movie that has skyrocketed the career of a mediocre filmmaker to levels of legend, I almost throw up every time someone compares Allen to giants like Fellini or Ingmar Bergman.
DenOndeMister 3 years ago
oh stop being so pretentious we get it you took a film class at a nice community college annie hall is the only film i have ever seen that honestly portrays the reality you face when your relationship breaks down and it STILL made me laugh out loud throughout. Woody Allen films are a matter of taste you either love him or hate him but why compare him to Bergman??

Annie Hall vs Star Wars?
I'd give the award to the one that doesnt have the PAINFUL screenplay.

whenever I think of great Academy Award injustices, I take a little solace in knowing the right film won it in 1977.

To bad the Woodman wasn't there. He was hilarious at the Oscar's in 2002 while introducing a short film about New York filmakers (in a tribute to New York after 9/11).

Woody Hall seems to be only a hobby film maker, and yet look what he has acheived

Being a 9 year old kid at the time, I was beyond crushed, destroyed and pissed beyond belief when "Star Wars" wasn't chosen as Best Picture.
I love Annie Hall, it took me 28 years to finally sit down and watch it in 2005.
gregfujita 3 years ago 21

I don't think I could. that's like literally choosing between my childhood and adult life. i'd still probably give the oscar to star wars, though. just for the fact i always had awesome christmas presents because of it. ;)
