Without that offroad excursion, he could have been the first f1 driver to win his first race. But still, having the pole isn't bad. He was the third to acheive it, after Andretti and Reutmans
@HammerLex77 Wheel to wheel, no, but as a hotlapper and car developer...notice how Arrows drastically improved from almost DNQ'ing at Australia in 1997 to being 0.058 off pole at Jerez? Not to mention Hungary. Even the paydriver Pedro Diniz was qualifying in the top 10 with that thing.
@darthbandon10 I agree. Hill was not pure racing talent but he was as effective as he could be- solid but not spectacular.
However, like his father, he was very good off the track and he brought big improvement to both Arrows and Jordan during his time there. A very good man, too.
@ComradeOblivious It was his choice to choose money over competitive cars. He was indeed one of the hottest drivers on the market during 2000 season because his stellar performances with BAR Honda. McLaren, Benetton were interested in him etc. I hope he will be involved in F1 somehow in the future though, maybe founding a team or something.

Let's be completely honest - Damon Hill wasn't very good.

As Hungary 1997 proved, it's funny how things come around again.

I think it's a real shame at how downhill Villeneuve's career went after he left Williams, drives like this showed that he deserved better.
