@1998tuna I have had a lot of requests to play it :-) Er, the thing is, when I last attempted to learn it, I found I could not do it! I just could not get from the verse to the chorus without getting in a big pickle. The drumming is terrifying on it!
I will have another go I think in 2012, 'cos my drumming has improved a lot over the past few years. Maybe I can do it now?
@jouxplan I remember when I first started trying to learn Jaco's bass line to Barbary Coast, initially I thought I will never be able to do this, but I came back to it a year later and funnily enough I go it down in one weekend, and I could not stop smiling. In case you never heard it here it is watch?v=RU8mZVEqWW8
Check it out. The drumming is also very nice. Actually there is another project for you. Learn the drumming from it. Please do it.
@essxpaul Not sure what you are trying to say. That my attempt is no good? If you are saying he did not use echo and things on this track, the common consensus is that he did, as he did on a lot of his studio recordings, to wonderful effect.
Nonetheless, also by common consensus, Copeland is one of the greatest drummers ever, and he plays stuff that most of us can barely imagine, whether in the studio or live. I for one struggle to copy his work, as I have said on every video I have done.
Thanks for posting,it would be easy to take potshots, damn difficult to do what you did.I'm sure someone is grateful to have you in the driver's seat of their band.
I've looked at some of your drum covers on this, Message in a Bottle and 'Dreamer' (Supertramp) and I've got to say how impressed and amazed I am because I've been trying to play the same three songs myself on drums (and bass) and I could never do as well as you did there...I really need to practice my rudiments if I want to hit the hi-hat as fast as you with one hand. I'm just practicing the rolling hi-hat/bass drum thing you mentioned on Dreamer myself. Very amazing.
Everything takes practise, and it would certainly be a lot easier to do those one-handed hi hat things with wooden sticks - a lot more bounce than using the Flix. I was at my absolute limit on this video :-)
Yeah, he used echo, but his own settings and no overdubs. I enjoyed your Synchronicity II. Shame you're not this side of the country (Herefordshire) cos I do a fair Sting but can't quite get the other 2 band members to put a whole gig together.
he did indeed use the echo effect, using triggers. I had the privilege to go to a drum clinic that his old drum tech did around June of last year and he showed us the tricks.
@jouxplan it was awesome, I'd say it's not bad for a first time drum clinic. now if I could just drinks some of the magic cool-aid that the drum tech had.. then I'd also gain some of that skill that he displayed on a couple of the songs he played.
@hurdle2228 To be honest, they make it much harder - they have much less bounce than a wooden stick (5A or 7A) and so the fast triplets on hi hat with right hand are damn near impossible. I am sure it would be much easier with wooden sticks :-)
In case your question is of a more general nature - I use Flix sticks on many of these vids simply because I was trying to keep sound levels low - I recorded using just a camcorder and drumming along to cd - no mixing.
Impressive! What would make it more of a spectacle would be if you were wearing a smart "Blues Brother" outfit with hat & sunglasses & you had at least four cameras shooting you: 1. from where the camera s now, to the side... 2. one from above looking str8 down... 3. one on your feet, smart black shoes a must... 4 one pointing square on in front of you. Peace. U NO HU
nice. i've been messing with a drumset for about 2 years now and i'v got most of this tune down. i just need to fix my snare triplets while i'm keeping the 8th notes going accurately on the high-hat, thats the trickiest park for me
@92soothsayer I'm 45 and have been trying to play this right for about 30 years - and only got it to this standard 3 years ago. So dude, if you are getting close after only two years, and you are 18 according to your channel, I take my hat off to you :-) Most of us find this absolutely hell to play!
@jouxplan well thanx for that, bro. yea it really was hell when i first started. but i enjoy the tune so much that i had to keep trying. funny i think how the bass and guitar tracks to this song are playable by maybe a 13 year old compared to the drum track
all respect to Sting and the guitar player of course along with Copeland for writing such a laid back tune for us to just chill to or have fun attempting to duplicate lol.
@69drummerdan hmm, now that i think about it, it has been almost hard for me lately to call those snare "triplets" i was talking about actual triplets (that snare trick after the first chorus and toward the outro). because the pattern that they're hit confused me for a while
but you know what? now that u mention it, \:) yea shuffled16th notes on hi-hat, and quarter-note triplets on snare is whats actually going on there, isnt it? lol thanks i think u just opened the door to the answer for me
Fair enough. I couldn't get them to rebound like you can, I like Pro- Mark cool rods, but you can't do side sticking with them. I really appreciate your video.
Really impressive the way you have paid attention to such detail. Its easy to improvise over this track but you have not strayed. True professional. I learned this when I got my first kit in 1981 and it took me a year!
@clivegreen45 1981! Ha! Ha! You beat me to it by 5 years my friend - my kit (the one in this vid!) I got in 1986!
Your comment is really apreciated, thank you! Yes, I spent several decades improvising to this, and it was not until I sat down to do this vid that I really bothered to try and play it 'right'. Nearly killed me! I think I worked for several weeks on all the details and tricky bits, and surprised myself with finding ways to play it. Great fun!
@Chrdrummer Thank you, glad you appreciated the video. It's a bit harsh to call the Flix crumby though! I think they are way better than other similar types of stick :-)
Your finesse is mind-blowing. The one-handed ruffs starting at around 1:00 are very impressive, as is the rest of the cover:] You done justice to one of my very favorite drummers, great work!
@ChonchQQ1332 That is very kind of you! When I look back on it, I wonder just how the hell I did it, especially with the Flix sticks - those ruffs were supremely tough to pull off without the bounce of the wooden stick.
I am thinking of doing a 'How I played Walking On The Moon' video at some point :-)
Wow, impressed how close this comes to the original. And if I may give a little rant to some overrated producers like Timbaland about who is said he makes hot beats... Listen to this, eat your heart out and stop using templates. ;)
The older I get, the more I think Stew Copeland is highly underappreciated... He not only formed the Police (not Sting, btw) he is truly a brilliant, brilliant rock drummer. All drummers strive to have some sort of sound, but there is clearly only one Stewart Copeland, and the mold is broken folks...
@JAB5625 He is truly unique. Hard to imagine The Police being anything like as great without his phenomenal drumming style - anyone else would have made their stuff boring, I suspect!
@mcpeepants92 Hello. They are Flix Sticks. Made in Scotland. Get them from any good drum shops, increasingly available worldwide :-) They are the business!
Dude amazing! I am a drummer and i love Neil Peart and John Bonham, but when it comes down to it I have the hardest time learning Stewart Copeland's hi-hat/rim shot style of playing. REALLY GREAT JOB.
@mcpeepants92 Dude that is very high praise! I am humbled. For what it is worth, when I did my cover of Rush's 'YYZ', it almost killed me! I cannot get anywhere near Peart, and as for Bonham - he is just God. Even when I play along to something as 'simple' as Kashmir, I make it sound pants :-) Bonham's groove was just something else.
A friend of mine in highschool took up drums and years later he thought he had progressed immensely because he could actually play some Police songs at a rather poor level...
Sent messages in the past.....but you are the MASTER! Amazing Copeland repro fella! Thank You for the lesson , audio and video excellence!!!! TB in NJ USA. This is a stretch but can you talk out the the timing on the high hat beginning?
@tbasis Hi hat - well, I could try, but you have to realise I have never had lessons and as such I struggle to convey in 'technical language' what I am doing. In essence, the hi hat is simply a shuffle, with odd accents and triplets thrown in here and there! I will have to listen to it again and try and explain in more detail :-)
You're getting it for the most part; I used to practice to this tune a lot back when this song was fairly new :-P No, not that much echo used on this song, but Stewart did use it to great effect a lot throughout Synchronicity. Dude, get rid of the gimmicky sticks and your rim shots will sound 200% better. You sound a lot like I did in 1987 :-)
@drumrb0y I also used to play this when it first came out, though back then my ability was such that I struggled like hell to do anything.
The gimmicky sticks as you call them are for a reason - so they are easier to see on these vids and so the drums are quieter - note I use no mics or mixing desk, just the music and my camcorder. Sticks would be too loud.
You are the Master of this Copeland thing fella! Hope all other aspects of your life are great by what you do for us! Thanks for the absolute best lesson , sound and and camera angle and quality. TB in NJ USA
@macdogq It is true to say that I have been trying to play along to this ever since I first heard it, when I was about 16 (30 years ago - aaaarrrrrrgggghhhh!). I remember back then I could not even get the bass drum to do the right thing :-) It is only very recently, and when trying to record this vid, that I realised there was a way to play it pretty close to the original, and then after a load more practise, I managed to make my arms and legs actually play what my brain wanted!
@magicdicko Agreed. A few years ago I tried playing a salsa thing that required such four limbed co-ordination it blew my mind. I almost gave up. Just could not get everything going at the same time. After hours of working at it, my limbs started to understand what my brain was asking, and it started to come. It can be very frustrating at times, but it is worthwhile in the end :-)
I have all their albums, and I've been a nmusician for 30+ years, and I love this song! The songwriting is excellent, I love the chord progression, the drumming, the guitar arrangements, the bass reggae feel, everything is so tasteful about it! I cannot find one reason why someone would think this is "not one of their best".
@vampiroangelico Ha! Ha! I am sorry if we have upset you! For my part, all I was saying was that compared to a lot of the other Police tracks, this one was not one of my favorites :-) That said, I have of course always been fascinated by the drum part (haven't we all?).
I remember hearing this song on the radio back in 1980 (doing my math homework at 7.00 in the morning!) and immediately enjoying it.
Then I remember myself a couple of years later, listening more seriously, discovering the insanity of the drum part, especially the solo, and becoming aware of what a fabulous drummer Stewart actually was.
But now, seeing you drumming that part makes me rediscover the song again. It's jaw-droppingly exciting! With a musicality deep into the veins. BIG respect!
@hminkema That's a wonderful comment - really glad this brought back memories for you and humbled you enjoyed my rendition. 'Insanity of the drum part' - I like that description! Quite right too - it is mad! But genius too. Copeland was fantastically exciting with his whole approach to the drum parts on all the Police songs.
The response I have had to this video just blows me away. It makes me realise that all those years of me wondering what the hell it was that Copeland was doing on this track, and trying to figure a way to copy it, have not been a sad waste of effort at all.
You are right about this song not being their best, but for drummers, it is insane :-)
Your technique, hand speed, discipline, and timing are strong from my angle. But you have something else, instincts akin to Copeland's, and that is why it appears "simple" and "fundamental" in spite of the difficult plane shifts and dynamics. Keep at it PLEASE, you have a gift that should be enjoyed AND INSPIRING to all, even....a newbie like me! Hana HOU!
I've been watching your videos nonstop since yesterday! I'm not a drummer, but a rhythm-obsessed dancer, and this piece in particular blows my mind. You definitely get my vote for the "best musician covering another musician on youtube" award!
@spershall Hey! Thank you! For a non-drummer to have enjoyed my videos so much means a lot to me - I am humbled.
As you will see from all the comments on this particular video, you are quite right - all of us drummers consider this a Copeland masterpiece, and it is horrific trying to copy it :-)
try and do "The Cinema Show" by Genesis, The time signature changes throughout make it really difficult to keep time. Thats your next challenge from me.
@MaryLax17 That is high praise - thank you! For what it is worth, I am at the very limit of my ability on this, and frankly, don't know how I did it! If I tried to play this again on camera, I would never get it this close again, I am sure!
Very nice job. It was pretty impressive all the way through. I don't think most people realize just how difficult and intricate this track actually is.
I agree - a lot of people under-estimate this, presumably until they really sit down and try and play all the little fiddly bits. For my part, it has driven me nuts for like 30 years, and I only recently worked it all out - it's not like I could play this 20, 10 or even 5 years ago!
I may have commented on this one before, but again excellent job. It was fun and instructive watching your very fast hihat doubles. And at 2:16 and at 3:19, well those triplets (or is it 3/2 or what?) looks like lots of fun. Well done!
I'm just learning. It will be a long time before I get this sort of independence and speed, especially with the amount I practice (too many other hobbies). Maybe I'll play this at my funeral :-).
You'll see that I've discussed the bits at around 2:16 and 3:19 with a few people - and I am not really sure what I am doing myself!!! I am just trying to make it sound the same as the original, in my own funny way :-)
Have a look thru the comments - there are some interesting discussions on here - this must be my most discusssed vid of the lot!
Anyway, don't lose heart - this is extremely difficult to play for a beginner! Just have fun!
My understanding is that there is lots of dubbing and echo's and stuff going on. have a look at my description, and read through some of the comments from others below, many of whom know far more than I do on this subject :-)
Superb job there, jouxplan. I think it's safe to say Stewart did indeed make liberal use of the echo machine on this one. Your simulation from 3:18 onwards is brilliant. Stewart's sound is indeed iconic and virtually unmatchable. Nice job !
Damn good cover. Good job!

A friend of mine in highschool took up drums and years later he thought he had progressed immensely because he could actually play some Police songs at a rather poor level...

Great i'm not drummer but my favorite drummer is steward cooperland but i have a question Which is your opinion about the way of play of cooperland?

@1172404 Thank you.
Sorry, I do not understand your question. Can you re-phrase it?

Thx for the response! Don't want to put you up to additional work, but you are so good at this my man!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sent messages in the past.....but you are the MASTER! Amazing Copeland repro fella! Thank You for the lesson , audio and video excellence!!!! TB in NJ USA. This is a stretch but can you talk out the the timing on the high hat beginning?
tbasis 1 year ago
@tbasis Hi hat - well, I could try, but you have to realise I have never had lessons and as such I struggle to convey in 'technical language' what I am doing. In essence, the hi hat is simply a shuffle, with odd accents and triplets thrown in here and there! I will have to listen to it again and try and explain in more detail :-)

Nicely done mate
vigilhammer 1 year ago
You're getting it for the most part; I used to practice to this tune a lot back when this song was fairly new :-P No, not that much echo used on this song, but Stewart did use it to great effect a lot throughout Synchronicity. Dude, get rid of the gimmicky sticks and your rim shots will sound 200% better. You sound a lot like I did in 1987 :-)
drumrb0y 1 year ago
@drumrb0y I also used to play this when it first came out, though back then my ability was such that I struggled like hell to do anything.
The gimmicky sticks as you call them are for a reason - so they are easier to see on these vids and so the drums are quieter - note I use no mics or mixing desk, just the music and my camcorder. Sticks would be too loud.

Always loved this song because of the drumming. Your cover is really great!

Rest of my life is very good, thank you !

That was pleasant. a little to hard on the drum edge maybe, but good work
Silverballer45ACP 1 year ago
I am not a instrument player of any kind, but it looks as if it takes a lot of practice to play this kind of complicated drums solo.
macdogq 1 year ago
@macdogq It is true to say that I have been trying to play along to this ever since I first heard it, when I was about 16 (30 years ago - aaaarrrrrrgggghhhh!). I remember back then I could not even get the bass drum to do the right thing :-) It is only very recently, and when trying to record this vid, that I realised there was a way to play it pretty close to the original, and then after a load more practise, I managed to make my arms and legs actually play what my brain wanted!
jouxplan 1 year ago
@jouxplan But it sounds great!!
macdogq 1 year ago
@jouxplan way i learnt my latin beat my brain reconised it after a while and now its hard to get it wrong
magicdicko 1 year ago
@magicdicko Agreed. A few years ago I tried playing a salsa thing that required such four limbed co-ordination it blew my mind. I almost gave up. Just could not get everything going at the same time. After hours of working at it, my limbs started to understand what my brain was asking, and it started to come. It can be very frustrating at times, but it is worthwhile in the end :-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
@jouxplan im workin on salsa right now its hard but im nearly there

Says who that this is "not one of their best"??
I have all their albums, and I've been a nmusician for 30+ years, and I love this song! The songwriting is excellent, I love the chord progression, the drumming, the guitar arrangements, the bass reggae feel, everything is so tasteful about it! I cannot find one reason why someone would think this is "not one of their best".
vampiroangelico 1 year ago
@vampiroangelico Ha! Ha! I am sorry if we have upset you! For my part, all I was saying was that compared to a lot of the other Police tracks, this one was not one of my favorites :-) That said, I have of course always been fascinated by the drum part (haven't we all?).
:-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
@jouxplan OK fair enuff.
Yeah the drums are of course great....Copeland has always been one of my favorite drummers (and I'm a guitarist).
vampiroangelico 1 year ago
I remember hearing this song on the radio back in 1980 (doing my math homework at 7.00 in the morning!) and immediately enjoying it.
Then I remember myself a couple of years later, listening more seriously, discovering the insanity of the drum part, especially the solo, and becoming aware of what a fabulous drummer Stewart actually was.
But now, seeing you drumming that part makes me rediscover the song again. It's jaw-droppingly exciting! With a musicality deep into the veins. BIG respect!
hminkema 1 year ago
@hminkema That's a wonderful comment - really glad this brought back memories for you and humbled you enjoyed my rendition. 'Insanity of the drum part' - I like that description! Quite right too - it is mad! But genius too. Copeland was fantastically exciting with his whole approach to the drum parts on all the Police songs.
Many thanks!

Wow I can't believe you nailed those odd notes at 2:20.
Funny this isn't one of their best songs, but it is a great piece by Stewart.
You crushed it.
gooney0 1 year ago
@gooney0
I am humbled, thank you.
The response I have had to this video just blows me away. It makes me realise that all those years of me wondering what the hell it was that Copeland was doing on this track, and trying to figure a way to copy it, have not been a sad waste of effort at all.
You are right about this song not being their best, but for drummers, it is insane :-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
Your technique, hand speed, discipline, and timing are strong from my angle. But you have something else, instincts akin to Copeland's, and that is why it appears "simple" and "fundamental" in spite of the difficult plane shifts and dynamics. Keep at it PLEASE, you have a gift that should be enjoyed AND INSPIRING to all, even....a newbie like me! Hana HOU!

@MaryLax17 That is high praise - thank you! For what it is worth, I am at the very limit of my ability on this, and frankly, don't know how I did it! If I tried to play this again on camera, I would never get it this close again, I am sure!
:-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
Very nice job. It was pretty impressive all the way through. I don't think most people realize just how difficult and intricate this track actually is.
jsmitty227 1 year ago
@jsmitty227 That's very kind of you :-)
I agree - a lot of people under-estimate this, presumably until they really sit down and try and play all the little fiddly bits. For my part, it has driven me nuts for like 30 years, and I only recently worked it all out - it's not like I could play this 20, 10 or even 5 years ago!
jouxplan 1 year ago
@jsmitty227 as is for every police song

I may have commented on this one before, but again excellent job. It was fun and instructive watching your very fast hihat doubles. And at 2:16 and at 3:19, well those triplets (or is it 3/2 or what?) looks like lots of fun. Well done!
I'm just learning. It will be a long time before I get this sort of independence and speed, especially with the amount I practice (too many other hobbies). Maybe I'll play this at my funeral :-).
mathomas1962 1 year ago
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
You'll see that I've discussed the bits at around 2:16 and 3:19 with a few people - and I am not really sure what I am doing myself!!! I am just trying to make it sound the same as the original, in my own funny way :-)
Have a look thru the comments - there are some interesting discussions on here - this must be my most discusssed vid of the lot!
Anyway, don't lose heart - this is extremely difficult to play for a beginner! Just have fun!

Superb job there, jouxplan. I think it's safe to say Stewart did indeed make liberal use of the echo machine on this one. Your simulation from 3:18 onwards is brilliant. Stewart's sound is indeed iconic and virtually unmatchable. Nice job !

I am insulting Copeland?
I don't think so. If I was Copeland, I would be proud and humbled that amateurs like me try so hard to copy his unique and wonderous drum parts.
Or are you saying that Copeland is such an asshole that he would actually be insulted?
No my friend, it is you who is insulting me, and all the people on here who have enjoyed this cover.
I have no intention of stopping. None.
Please post you video of this, so that we may all learn how to avoid insulting Copeland
