this isn't Noh, even though a Noh mask is used...this is a cross between Bunraku (the priest who is crossing the river) and really good Kabuki (the actor is using a acting style called ningyo buri...imitation puppet)
Truly amazing style of theater. I never would have thought of a character playing a puppet, being puppeteered by a puppet, being puppeteered by a stagehand. AWESOME!
Tamasaburo is pretending to be a Bunraku doll. And behind him is a Bunraku doll that is supposed to be the puppeteer. All of the actual puppeteers are dressed in black so they sort of fade into the background.
The priest in the boat and the puppet master behind Tamasaburo are both puppets.
I actually saw this production, so it's interesting to see the video. Apparently I completely missed the fact that Tamasaburo was playing a fake puppet, because I have no memory of that.
I'm sorry but I can't find any of this in video stores. Breaks my heart. I've tried to turn my wife and kids on to kabuki and this type of theater. Suggestions? It's all wonderful.
this video is from a TV broadcast and as far as I know this act was not available in DVD/VHS. However other DVDs from Tamasaburo are available. For more info see tamasaburoDOTorg/dvd.aspx (replace DOT with .)
it would've been so nice to see al the play tamasaburo looks so gr8 when he is in the river, the noh mask is something i didnt expected, i think it is hannya, for representing the demon who posseses kiyohime the kimono is amazing, i suppose the red kimono has the same function as in sagi musume, many similarities with the dojoji musme is it the same play?
They are based on different sections of the same story. In here, Kiyohime was chasing after the monk she loved. (Not shown here was the scene that the monk hide under a bell and Kiyohime the serpent melted the bell and burnt the monk).
In the kabuki play "Musume Dojoji", many years have passed, and the temple has a new bell. A young girl comes to the temple and the priests agree to let her dance in honor of the bell. As she whirls in a dance with hats, they become scales and she reveals herself as the demonic serpent-woman.
Oh wow! I had a really hard time trying to figure out if it was actually him or a puppet that really LOOKED like him. Fantastic! My love for him grows daily. ♥
how very interesting! Noh Kabuki! that's one of the coolest things i've ever seen!

In this type of act, Kabuki actors pay homage to the Bunraku puppet theatre from which several Kabuki plays are drawn.
