Thanks Eric and Ernie - Eric's legacy to Harefield Hospital saved my life last year when I was treated there after a heart attack so a big thank you to his family too.
Vic and Bob are far more surreal- Morecambe and Wise were essentially from the music hall tradition, Vic and Bob are a lot more influenced by the Goons and their descendants, both Oxbridge (Python, Cook) and non-Oxbridge (Benny Hill, the 1980's "alternatives").
@matthe3234 I think the BBC continues to bring us great shows, it's just the type of show has changed. What about Sherlock, Great Expectations, Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes, Frozen Planet, Hustle and Later With Jools Holland? Or comedies like Have I Got News For You or Would I Lie To You? It's ITV and channel 5 that lowers the level of class!!
My gran died last tuesday and last night was her funeral, this was the song they played at the end of the service, not the orginal but the M + W version, I think she'd have loved it and I can play this and think of her and smile
The lady at the end was Janet Webb - she only ever appeared at the end of the show and accepted the applause saying "I’d like to thank you for watching me and my little show here tonight. If you’ve enjoyed it then it's all been worthwhile. So until we meet again, goodnight, and I love you all!" M&W were always totally bemused as to who this persn was - sheer comic genius - we miss these guys!
As a 17 year old, i wish there was still this sort of comedy knocking around. Those alive in the 60's and 70's were very lucky for televison, football and music!
This brings nothing BUT smiles to my face! I remember this show and looked forward with glee to the programme. It was healthy fun with the occasional slight naughty suggestion. I remember at the end after they sang that song, a man with a moustache would appear at the back of the stage (there was a hidden drop). Anyone remember that?
Just amazing. What i always get from watching Morecombe & Wise is the real affection they had for each other. They remain (alongside Laurel & Hardy in film) as the greatest of comedy double acts
I wish TV was still this good, these days its not worth shoving your hand down the inside of the dirty couch to retrieve the remote to flick through 300 channels of pure crap.
CLASSIC, Great Piano sound on this version, just think if Eric had been born four miles down the road and it could have been Heysham & Wise, doesnt quite have the same ring to it though does it?
Morecambe & Wise were, quite simply, THE BEST . Theirs was the only show that my Grand-parents, Parents & myself (3 generations) all loved to watch together !!
lankylad i agree with you they were 1 hell of a comedy duo but u say no duo comes close i can think of a duo that comes close the 2 ronnies its obvious ronnie barker not only did the 2 ronnies but went onto do lodes of other great shows as well i like morecambe and wise a lot but to me it was the 2 ronnies winning all the way i know its kinda hard to compare these acts as they were all class in their own right but still all the comedy acts back then was what our tv was made for
So much love you can give for each brand new bright tomorrow - shown by everyone who's posted. Thanks to you, Eric & Little Ern will live forever more.
Not only they don't make them like this any more, they can't make them like this any more. Today's overnight sensations come and go in a blink; Eric and Ernie are immortal. It's amazing how much love I have for what these two have done.
do u know what nothing ever will ever come close to these pair ever legends these days x factor etc thats what our life is now its rubbish saturday nite is shite
Did I see the great Peter Cushing's name roll by in the credits? I'd love to see Peter getting the M&W "treatment." I love these guys, and I'm an American.
I love these guys. So warm, friendly and genuinely funny. I never heard a bad word or an expletive ever pass their lips. They were from a gentler age of simple comedy when there was more respect for each other; an age now sadly gone. Like others have said, today's comedians are not the same, and the world seems a harder, more cynical place than the M&W era. They were the greatest. Thank goodness for all the recordings they left behind! Rock on, Eric and Ernie.
i'm 20 and i love morecambe and wise, as well as two ronnies. It reminds me of my grandad, watching him laughing in his chair with tears rolling down his face, these guys were comedy genius and no1 will ever come close to doing what they did, may they rest in peace and continue to bring enjoyment to the people of the world
I agree with all of your comments here, i grew up watching Eric and Ernie, i really used to look forward to Saturday night on TV. I agree with lankylad69 ,it does bring tears to your eyes, especially when you hear the Bring Me Sunshine song. Life seemed much happier back then. What a miss Eric and Ernie are.
Ohhhh man, i'm a 40yo man and this brings tears to my eyes lol I'm 8 years old again, in my striped pajamas eating jam and bread and drinking tea and looking forward to my mams home made cheesecake. @lankylad69 I so much agree with your comments , those Saturday nights could never be matched by anything today , little did we know what we had then , that was television at its best , and the likes of these two comedians will never be seen again .
@lankylad69 Well said. Heart aches just listening to this. Beautiful, beautiful times and comedy at its sweetest and best. Eric and little Ern. What a gift they were to me,
@lankylad69 I'm 54 and have tears in my eyes reading your comment, I also would love to go back to those Saturday nights and the Morcambe and Wise show, mum and dad still here, couch pulled forward, close to fire, me and my sister 12 or 13 or so, and the treat, a glass of cream soda with a dob of ice cream. I am so with you.
@BritishCompilations I'm totally with you mate. Everything you said was the same in our household. Settee pulled right up to the fire. And oh man don't even get me started on cream soda and ice cream :) I'm SO there right now, best times ever :)
@lankylad69 Yeah, those great Saturdays!: Champion The Wonder Horse, Robinson Crusoe, Grandstand, The World Of Sport, Candid Camera, Dr Who (John Pertwee), The Generation Game, Morecambe & Wise, Match Of The Day (when English football was the best), Parkinson (super legendary guests) and a Peter Cushing - Christopher Lee hammer horror movie to finish off. ABSOLUTE BLISS.
@lankylad69 you are spot on brother, Im 45, from Birmingham.......this is saturday teatime aye!! Fills me with a warm glow and like you, almost to tears. Harmless, funny wonderful entertainers....love it!!!!!!!!!
@lankylad69 god i know exactly what you mean just to trade a few hours of now to go back to then saturday night with my pikelets as we called them and watch morcambe and wise, black and white minstrel show, the good ole days and seaside special they really were special times for me.
I love at 1:22 where Eric just laughs a little at Ernie's dancing, it shows they really were having a great time as well as making amazing tv. Love them both
No matter how much M+W took the micky out of the 'star guests' very few turned down to opportunity to go on the show. M+W and the two Ronnies are still Britain's best double acts. The likes of Ant and Dec are a waste of space in comparison
Their show was one of the highlights of my xmas as a youngster, it will never be the same without them. The best double act this country has ever had.
@brandywine1960 It's funny, here we are a few days away from christmas, and you are here, I also remember as a kid, Christmas night, with the Morcambe and Wise special, wonderful tmes, sadly my mum and dad are gone, all those days are gone (but never forgotten) I love your comment
Watching these at Christmas was a magical time, when things in the news wasn't as bad as what is is today! and Christmas felt like Christmas and not commercialised as it is today! and no hundreds of channels to watch, bliss!!!!
Oh, I totally agree with you 555pointifex. I am only 18 years old but even I think that modern comedy is rubbish compared to classic comedy. Modern comedy lacks the charm, wit and genius of classic comedy.
@SwingStu wrote "Americanization destroyed British comedy, the best kind." Well maybe - but remember that "Bring Me Sunshine" was written by Arthur Kent ans Sylvia Dee. Two American songwriters. It's hard to even think of ol' Eric and Ernie without that bit of Americanization.
Wonderful stuff. The phrase 'national treasure' is banded about in the press too often, but M & W were the real deal. Everybody loved them, and with good reason. We ar still missing them today.
They were and will always be the greatest double act of all time. I am fed up with all the crap that is shown on TV now days.
So called celebrities are being paid ridiculous amounts of money for doing nothing, they have no talent, where as on the other hand look at the amazing talent Eric and Ernie had. At least Eric and Ernie will always be remembered unlike some of these modern day clowns just look at the viewing figures they had that says it all. Rest in peace Eric and Ernie
You're so right. Comedy nowadays is mostly cynical and self promoting. I follow modern comedy and enjoy it but acts like Eric and Ernie are like therapy - they leave you feeling joyful and refreshed. That must be a really difficult thing to achieve.
When things are getting a bit on top of you at work/personal life or whatever, this is the tune to brighten up the situation...great stuff.

No matter how much M+W took the micky out of the 'star guests' very few turned down to opportunity to go on the show. M+W and the two Ronnies are still Britain's best double acts. The likes of Ant and Dec are a waste of space in comparison
madabbafan 2 years ago 77
@madabbafan compairing ant and dec to M&W is like compairing the Niagra Falls to a bathroom tap.

Their show was one of the highlights of my xmas as a youngster, it will never be the same without them. The best double act this country has ever had.
RIP Eric & Ernie.

Watching and listening to these guys makes one feel good all over. Too bad we don't have more entertainers like M & C. God rest their souls.

Watching these at Christmas was a magical time, when things in the news wasn't as bad as what is is today! and Christmas felt like Christmas and not commercialised as it is today! and no hundreds of channels to watch, bliss!!!!

Different generations of comedy:
The gentle and uplifting comedy of Morecambe and Wise... and the gutter comedy of Little Britain and Russel Brand.
I think the choice is obvious.. don't you?
555pontifex 2 years ago 11
Oh, I totally agree with you 555pointifex. I am only 18 years old but even I think that modern comedy is rubbish compared to classic comedy. Modern comedy lacks the charm, wit and genius of classic comedy.
EmperorOfEditing 2 years ago 6
And I completely agree with you. Classic comedy walks all over modern comedy.

@555pontifex Americanization destroyed British comedy, the best kind.
SwingStu 8 months ago
@SwingStu wrote "Americanization destroyed British comedy, the best kind." Well maybe - but remember that "Bring Me Sunshine" was written by Arthur Kent ans Sylvia Dee. Two American songwriters. It's hard to even think of ol' Eric and Ernie without that bit of Americanization.

Wonderful stuff. The phrase 'national treasure' is banded about in the press too often, but M & W were the real deal. Everybody loved them, and with good reason. We ar still missing them today.
Gulftastic 2 years ago 3
my whole life, was M&W, tommy cooper, so sad they are gone, but never forgotten
redredreds100 2 years ago 2
With all the repeats we get on Freeview, why can't they give us Morecambe & Wise???
anothercrusader 2 years ago 4
ROFL! 1:14- 1:40 is absolutely hilarious! Classic comedy is better than modern comedy by far.

True legends, We need more of there re-runs on tv, Cheer up the whole planet. No more doom and Gloom. Peace and Love to all

Rest in peace Eric and Ernie
leejohn70 2 years ago 2
You're so right. Comedy nowadays is mostly cynical and self promoting. I follow modern comedy and enjoy it but acts like Eric and Ernie are like therapy - they leave you feeling joyful and refreshed. That must be a really difficult thing to achieve.
