Madness don't think I would be alone then in thinking that the weapons system on our navy boats would be a key component for even having a navy. Surely its like sending a soldier to war armed with a tooth pick. Wonder if the powers at be will come to there sences and do some sort of up grade. Seems to be alot of investment here in these ships as well as the OSPV with one of there major components missing.
The new USCG vessels which are off a similiar weight and have a similiar role have a 25mm and 4 50 cals. The reason why they are armed like this is due to Uncle Helen's government. Likewise the OPV's are based on an Irish design which has a 76mm gun and capable on engaging anti-ship missiles. In short the OPVs are armed to a level appropriate to an IPV. While the LRV (Limited Role Vessel) HMNZS Canterbury is a civilian car ferry painted navy gray woulb be slaughtered
Do they have the 25mm for this patrol boat or just the mounting for it . Seams crazy to have million dollar ships on patrol with out any teeth. I see the oz patrol boats have them mounted. Whats the reason for these not to have them mounted ?

That is because they were purchased under the Labour Alliance Coalition Government which of course did not want a RNZN vessel to have a passing resemblance to a naval vessel in case the hippies and betnicks got upset. What is more interesting is the way they have put Seasprites on the underarmed OPVs and the LRV (Limited Role Vessel) HMNZS Canterbury
These ships are under-armed and if they meet a pirate ship, would lose all credibilty! The message has been often repeated, "if you are going defend, then carry a big gun!"
they have a mounting for a 25 mm naval stabilised deck gun - but do not routinely arm with it. they have 50 cal machine guns for normal duties - it is about all that is really necessary on the otherwise peaceful NZ coast

@bjh05 Those are patrol vessels, not war ships so they are not really going to have missiles and cannons.
