How is it possible for a rational mind to take issue with a character in a children's story? Especially one how so valiantly gets the sleigh to it's destination?
It is religious thinking that leads to that kind off offence.
I am disappointed in the man. Not because he is offended, but that he would pretend to be. It seems to me that he is patronising his audience.
@gabiotta I have no idea why Dawkins is offended, but I can give you a few reasons to dislike the story: Its shallow and paternalistic.Rudolph is bullied, ostracised for his appearance, which he can't control and is only allowed in the social group when the boss decides his deformity becomes useful. That can be alienating for kids that read the stories with deformities that aren't so convenient as well as used by justification by the bullies.
@gabiotta Furthermore, lets say that Dawkins isn't offended by Rudolph and wants to use an example that his audience will understand without having to go into a tangent. Whats wrong with that if he gets his point across?
The thing is, I know this audience.. They are a highly educated and extremely cultured group of people. Indian literature in English is at the cutting edge literary fiction. They also come from a country that is rife with sectarian violence, where people are often killed over religious offence.
Like I said, I think he is patronising them and it weakens the points he is making. It is little more than more of the silly name calling that popular atheism has descended to.
Indians should throw out those christian evangelicals out of the country...they are there to do Indians evil
