  • Utopiang have you ever been abused as a child? Had a father who so "undeservingly" believed the Bible that his actions contradicted the Bible's message? Do you know the difference between fiction and something which is written as a direct revelation, the way the Bible was!! Then if you have never have had pain and sadness of that sadness, you will never understand the book !!

  • The Shack does not deny penal substitution. Young didn't deny Jesus dying on the cross, nor did it state that God the father died instead of Jesus. It is simply elaborating on the nature of the Godhead to help Mac (the main character) understand and rebuilt his relationship with God. In the context of the book Mac sees God in a compromised light because of what happened to Missy (his daughter) and how his own father treated him growing up. Have you read the book?

  • Yes, Tikko. I understand what you are saying, but you are taking what Young said out of context. Simply, the point he was trying to make was that Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit are one. That is the nature of the Godhead. God the Father did sent Jesus to die on the cross. Young did not deny that.. In the context of the book Mac is disillusioned with God because of his abusive relationship with his own father. He is simply stating that God was with Jesus on the cross. Do you see what I'm saying?

  • Do you guys not realize that this book was a fictional interpretation? This book is one man's SHACK. A story about something that really happened to him. He shares his suffering and HIS view of who God is. To say that a FICTIONAL work is false doctrine is absurd. The trinity is the F,S, and HS ; all separate but one. To say that God didn't die on the cross would be to say that Jesus wasn't fully God TikkiRo. But we're missing the point here. Doctrine is important but God judges the heart.

  • I do not believe in the Trinity at all as I believe it is a false doctrine, but once i read it as a fiction book as it is. it was good.

  • one of the best books i have read

  • It's a good book, i read recently, though i never heard of it until i saw it in the store.

  • This book has helped many people see God in a different way. A good way.

  • Fine, if you don't care what God you know or serve, as Paul Young absolutely does not teach anything of Truth about the God of the Bible. He denies the doctrine of penal substitution (i.e. that God sent Jesus to die on a cross for the sin of mankind), and infers that God Himself died on the cross (scripturally inaccurate and bordering on heresy) , and a host of other major errors that will actually lead people AWAY from God and not to Him! :(

  • Hi, just wondering if you read the book. I've found that most critics of the book haven't read it.

I'd also like to encourage you to consider that not all Christ followers hold to penal substituion - not sure if Jesus taught it, or if this doctrine/theory was emphasized as an essential to the faith during the first 1500 year of Christianity.

  • (continued above response to TikkiRo)

As for your concerns about "God Himself died on the cross"... well I'm not sure if anyone can completely understand the trinity... there was a point to be made, it was a fiction story. I don't think Paul Young was attempting to create a theology textbook...

Anyways... I found this story encouraged me to view God as the God of love that he is... and to value my relationship with Him.

God bless you seek to know your God.

  • no god

  • Amen, TikkiRo, on every point. God bless you for boldly speaking the truth in love. Some will heed the warnings, others tragically will not. Let those of us who know that "The Shack" is heretical and teaching lies about God keep sounding out the warnings in Christ's blessed name. Amen.

  • Religion and violent literature, A match made in heaven... if you will.
