  • love the vids. I personally have a TS 9 and an older ts 10. I think for my playing which is in the

blues and country market I find that the TS 9 adds a nice over the edge sus when needed.

The more I play though the more I am beginning to appreciate a clean guitar and knowledgeable playing.

You apparently have the same ears as I have, as you expressed everything that I was thinking.

  • Definitely the TS9. It sounded a little more crispier.

  • TS808 is the nicest, and i'd say grab the TS9DX as a second flavor to have two pedals with a broad variety of character. i'd skip on the TS9 itself. i already own a TS808, so i guess i need a DX now!

  • Hey guys, i am fixing to buy a Twin Reverb, which as you know, has no dirty channel. and i'm looking for a good crunch pedal. would the TS 808 sound good if it was used as a crunch channel and then i threw a Boss OD-3 on it for like choruses and solos. I can't test this out because in my city, the guitar shops don't have the TS 808 on hand

  • The TS 808 is sweeter but with less output I would say, the TS9 has more output but it's more harsh to my ears.

  • TS9DX WINS .........GUY'S CHECK OUT MY PROFILE PIC PEDAL BOARD ....I USE THE DX IT MAKES THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING SHAKE........ROCK ON

  • If u have a solid state just throw it in the trash where it goes.

  • If th guy could play guitar we had probably a benefit of this comparison

  • @lehrgangswerk He was contrasting the sounds of three different pedals, not performing to impress random trolls; the simplicity and consistency of his playing were entirely appropriate for this purpose.

  • what exactly does a tube screamer pedal do? would it give the effect of a tube amp when just using a solid state amp?

  • @tatoo190 well i know that many people who play metal use tubescreamers on the overdrive channel as a clean boost, but i think they are simulating the breakup of tube amps

  • I have a ts dx and find I usually just keep it set to original mode. Once in a while through a clean amp with a strat I'll kick it up one mode to fatten it up a bit. Any more than one mode up is too woofy for me. I luv the sound of the ts-808. A little more complex and less of that midrange vowel like sound. If your looking to scoop mids out a little more I would go woth the mxr zack wylde od.

  • Thanks for saving me a bunch of money. I thought I wanted one of these, but none of them are my cup of tea. Guess I'm back to the drawing board on what Overdrive pedal I want.

  • @JLWing77 I'm not an expert in Guitar but I'm a music fan! I play drums and DJ and I love Behringer the make great stuff for the price so if your tight in your budget go and watch a video on the Behringer vintage tube overdrive. It' sonly 35$ or so! check it out and hope it helps

P.S.: go on their website in the pedal category and see what pedals could interest you!

  • TS9 sounds great. \m/

  • @dbsensplzrdstrz I own a rockerverb, and I use a 1984 TS9 with the JRC chip. I use the clean channel and get it to just where it starts to break up, then hit the tube screamer. Beautiful sound.

  • I would say those three are great pedals, but for me the best is ts808, for clean or for overdriven channels, its great for both ways, the ts9 its great too but more for metal and that stuff, it sounds more "plastic" so as the ts9dx, and it also has the ts9 function plus some different options, great pedals, really cool, the three, I have tried them all, I really love them

  • I think each tube screamer makes your sound worse. You got a nice glassy distortion out of the amp, why throw a wet blanket over it with a tube screamer? It just makes the sound dull.

You'd need a ton of compression to take that sound out of the crapper!

    My two cents worth,

    mike d.

  • Hey you should do a video running overdrive pedals/tube screamers through a peavey 6505(if you can get your hands on one)

  • Okay, lets just make this easy for people that dont wanna watch 8 minutes of this-- they all have the same exact tone. The Turbo Tube Screamer (one in the middle) just has a few hotter gainier variations at hand at your disposal. Use em to had grit to your tone, drive your cicutry and your tubes. Play, have fun, and enjoy!

(I watched the video though just so everyone is clear. Nice video Tone King! Im a fan.)

  • Purely for a solo boost and mabe being used as a slight overdrive I like the TS808. I think it has more character when he's playing those short little licks and got it on over the distortion.

  • What most people don't realize is that Ibanez doesn't make shit. Ibanez is nothing more than a brand name owned by Japanese company, Hoshino Gakki - the same company that owns the Tama brand. They make next to nothing of their own, they subcontract other companies to make it for them - as they did Maxon in the 70's with their TS-808. You want a real Tube Screamer? Don't bother with Ibanez crap unless it's a vintage 808. Otherwise, get a Maxon. Anything else is just a cheap imitation.

  • i just got a Marshall mode four, its not a all tube amp but it has a 2 ECC83 tube pre-amp, would i get the same effect out of the ts9 or would i loose tone?

  • hey! which one's closer to John Mayer's tone? :)

  • @piccicacca TS 808 or Marshall Bluesbreaker will get you in the ballpark.

  • TS9 should always be every ones choice. Especially if you have a Orange Rockerverb.

  • TS9 for me. The DX was a bit too muddied but the TS9 was just right.

  • Comment removed

  • damn that amp don't need a tube screamer. lol

  • actually Stevie Ray Vaughan used the ts808

  • finally somebody demoing an overdrive pedal on an amps overdrive channel

  • ts808 hands down if you want more gain there are plenty of mods out there for that but the ts808 just has such a smooth warm harmonically rich tone and plus it's the one that almost every pro uses

  • TS9

  • I am a purist.

    TS9 for sure.

  • @leandrotorreal Wouldnt that mean you would want an original ts-808 haha

  • Fcking DX mate! i gonna buy that shit up!!!

  • @ThePonapple

On an amp with multiple channels one usually is clean or it may say "rhythm" the other is overdrive or dirty/ distortion. Usually the gain knob affects the distortion unless you're playing a Mesa amp in which they get technical and make the gain just affect the output volume slash to middle currency if e equals mc squared. Good luck!

  • more rocking, less talking? He spoke for about a minute

  • Guys im a mega noob. Can one of you please tell me what a clean channel and a dirty channel is?

  • the dx on TS9 setting? does it have the exact same wiring?

  • TS9DX FOR ME

  • Great demo!! ..i cant stop imagining danny de vito in a house built out of amps :)D :)D ...but seriously man great demo - thank you for this one - great shoot out demo!

  • Ha! Wouldn't have taken the piss if I knew it was your catch-phrase =) I've subbed, thanks for the good TS9 comparisons. Looking to push my tube amp a bit further and reckon the TS9 is a good place to start. Thanks again.

  • @jigmesam nice. I guess it only takes a few videos to figure it out, huh? BTW - Ill share w/ you a funny story. For a short period of time - I stopped doing it - and everyone asked where my intro went? I guess it wouldn't be me, if I didn't do my intro :-). Anyway - always appreciate the dialogue! Have a great weekend!

  • very helpful demo, I like the TS9 and the ts808, not so sure that the 808 is really worth the extra money, anybody have an opinion?

  • @actionjacksondan get a ts9 and buy the banshee mod for it from e-bay the mod cost $25 I've got that mod on my ts9 and it sounds amazing it brings the ts9 to the original specks of the ts808 plus adds twice the gain, converts the pedal to true by pass, decreases background noise, and adds a bass boost switch and comes with very good directions although i would not recommend installing it your self if your not experienced with a soldering iron hope this helps

  • @js6729 Cool deal, thanks for the advice

  • your the best, tone king!! i

s this your job??? you are so lucky!!

  • @Imsjr can you make the ts9-dx soud like a ts-9

  • I'm liking the the TS9. The TS808 sounds a little too warm to me, and the TS9DX sounds horrible and Muddy. The TS9 was perfect.

  • the ts9 sounds better than the ts9dx when the ts9dx is on ts9 mode but i have had the ts9dx for a couple of years and its a great pedal! very versatile!

  • it's good as boost? :D

  • @AKMusic188 yes very

  • really liking your tone hence the toneking

  • TS808!

  • I like the turbo the best

  • Is the TS9DX Digital?

  • I have the TS9DX and when I use it at high volume I get tons of high pitch feedback. I have a boss NS2 which keeps noise in check but can't seem to handle it when the TS9DX is on. Anyone know of a resolution to this feedback with the TS9 that I can use to resolve?

  • @leerat69 Yes a Hum Eliminator or a Boss Noise Suppressor.

  • Which would you recommend to run in front of an Orange Rockerverb?

  • @dbsensplzrdstrz i use ts808 with my rockerverb. really nice tone.

  • such a loud opening theme.. :( but the review was good

  • Personally I think I prefer the TS9DX. More versatile.

Whoever I heard it from was right that these pedals really scream when you put them on top of a dirty amp.

  • Which one would be better for stoner-rock and blues? The TS9DX sounds a little too trebly, IMO.

  • @Falling2Grey29 ts808 for sure that's what it was made for

  • It's not the real ts808 but a reissue..

  • 3rd one's the best for me Danny D.!

    Cheers for the demo!

  • RoCk ON! ..Later!...

    Danny DeVito!! :)D

  • Bro just out of interest,..is that you're bedroom? or is your house built out of AMPS!

  • last one no doubt i dont care the cost

  • Thanks man, this vid helped me make up my mind.

  • Which would you reccomend for metal? The TS9?

  • @trashthethrasher JB Brubaker from August Burns Red uses a TS9 and it sounds gorgeous

  • @SharkMako yeah he does but he uses it with a combination of other distortion pedals lol

  • The TS9DX sounds better when modified by Keeley.

  • @213thrash In my opinion the amp is the most important for the Thrash Metal and i would use the TS9 as a lead boost.Hope that helps.

  • Which is best fro thrash metal?

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the demo. What's your opinion of the Keeley modded TS-808's? I do play blues, for the most part, and want something that will break it up nicely, but not distort the shit out of it. Know what I mean?

    Thanks.

  • personally i love the ts9... rally clean tone in comparison to the others! and im all about that clean crisp tone :)

  • got a ts9dx to use together in chain signal with a ts808 that already have :)

  • will this run through a line 6 spider 3, 150 watt combo fine, some od pedals dont so i was wondering if this is ok

  • Wait he's coming at us live?

Amazing how he started doing this review just as i clicked on it! :D

  • I wish there was more single note riffing and such to compare the tone...with the chords i didn't care what they sounded like, it's all just distortion.

  • in my opinion the ts808 is better both for blues and rock, TS9 sounds kinda harsher to me,even though it doesn't differ too much from the first, if you play rock you wanna use it with an already crunchy amp, so the TS808 is gonna give you that warm punchy mid hump which is so sweet for some vintage rock

  • I do like the Ts9. I've got one for the last 25+ years and really like it.

    Dennis.

  • Great demo, I think for me it would be the TS9, just to give it that singing quality with my Marshall

  • there isn't that much of a difference between the $180 and the 100$. save some money by buying the ts9

  • Or u could just get all three :D

  • hey toneking! i was wondering. wich cables/patchies do you use? the sound is very good!

    thanks in advance :D

  • the TS9DX imo is the best, has better midrange and clearer highs, also seem more vocal.

  • crap guitar.

    crap amp.

    TS808 rules

  • jay leno is that you?

  • The one on the right seems brighter. Hard to tell which one sounds better from the vid?

  • very good reviews..less talk more play

i like the 'ts9' personally as ts9dx is too versatile; im not ganna use the other modes for sure. ts808 is another way around I may buy it if i like to have some 'creamy tone'.

thx for the reviews, keep rockn'

  • For solo boost on Overdrive channel, which one gives me just that little extra something Marshall-like?

  • Toneking, dig it! Love the vid, thanks for taking the time to put this up! In your own opinion for lead licks which of the two would you recommend? TS9 or TS808?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @COLEA001 Thanks. TS808 is warmer ... so for blues it's a great pedal. For Rock ... the TS9 has a bit more 'treble' to it ... so it may suit you better. HOpe that helps!

  • @lmsjr where the distortion comes from?it's just amazing! and with the boost it's even more amazing

  • As always, very helpful review!!! Saved me lots of the "Russian roulette" factor of buying off line.

  • Should i buy a TS to make my Peavey Valve King Head more Metal, or should i just save money for a new amp?

It sound like a dirty Marshall, but not like a straigt-throught "Metalhead" , can i get a better Rythm sound with using a TS, or any other Pedal, f.e. the BOSS Metalcore?

  • Should i buy a TS to make my Peavey Valve King Head more Metal, or should i just save money for a new amp?

It sound like a dirty Marshall, but not like a straigt-throught "Metalhead" , can i get a better Rythm sound with using a TS?

  • Can you use the TS9 to emulate a tone pot? I've seen loads of guitarists that use guitars with no tone pot and always have a TS9

  • Ibanez guitars = SHIT

    Ibanez pedal = THE shit

  • @CacheSeaker

Your idea of Ibanez Guitars = Bullshit..

Seriously Try an Ibby, Try an Rg570/550 And then Tell me they are shit...

  • Hey man, what kind of guitar you playing in the video? Sound awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • TS 7 - then mod it to a TS 808 specs ;)

Saves quite a lot of money...

  • i aggree tthe 808 is creamier and probably would sound great teamed up with a big muff or even a cranked up eq. didn't hear the mushy tones that were talked about with the dx, i thought it sounded great throught that amps crunch chanel. I have the dx and run it with a boss fender bassman pedal through a marshall jcm 900 in the clean Chanel with the dx set on hot played my first gig with it last night punk rock it delivered a real fluid tone not too crackly or noisy sounded pretty good .

  • I just dont think Tubescreamers sound good on Les Pauls...

  • @FreaquedeMusique It just depends on how the person uses it. I can get a great blues tone with humbuckers out of my TS9, but I do prefer to use it with a strat.

  • Hey, it looks loke you know "a bit" about tone and pedals haha, and i was wondering if you could help me.

For a couple of days i´ve been to figure out what pedal to buy, i´m between a few, and I can´t decide for myself, help please? I use a Fender Stratocaster American Deluxe 1963.

They are: Boss Blues Driver BD-2, BB-2 Bluesbreaker II, FulltoneFulldrive 2, Ibanez TS9DX, Ibanez TS9, or the Ibanez TS808 .

I would really appreciate your help, Thank you.

  • This video helped me make the final decision on the TS 808. Thanks Tone King. I appreciate your work on all this gear. I play it through my V3 too.

  • would the TS9DX be a good pedal to boost a marshall plexi for a solo?

  • I wanna hear all 3 on at once!

  • Comment removed

  • From a player perspective, I'd have to go with the 808. The clarity, the harmonic glassiness, are all what constitute a great pedal. I've used many different overdrive distortion pedals from various manufacturers, and have my picks from them, but for what Ibanez has in their offering , the overall punch, bright yet clean gain , the 808 is definately the way to go.

  • Really cool demo, thanks!

  • tried the TS9 and it kicks ass for metal

  • I'd get both the 808 and 9. So much versatility in there.

  • i still love my TS 808, i play indie rock with that.. and still awesome

  • I would never leave that room 0_0

  • wow I'm not a fan of tube-screamers...always thought the Fulltone OCD killed em, but thought the TS-808 was worth a try...but after hearing this demo, to my ears, the regular ol' TS9 sounded the best, and did great when boosting an already dirty amp..great demo, TK may have to take a shot at a TS9.

  • not a huge difference to me between the three

  • definitely the TS9DX. been wanting to get that one actually. informative video! thank you!

  • tanx , very good lesson )

  • Less Talking More Rocking

    Haha I Love It!

    D:

  • The 808 was my favourite.

It just pushes an already dirty amp that perfect amount.

Definite;y going to look into buying one of these.

  • stalin said 1 death a tragedy 1million a statistic, I say 1 pedal a tradgedy 30 a rockin good time. thank u mr.tone king

  • I use the TS9DX (on 'hot' mode) as a boost for my Peavey Transtube, on the lead channel. Makes the harmonics jump n scream.

  • oh man, i dont know how to choose... ts9 ts9dx, ts808, bad monkey, ocd........

  • You know a completely under rated pedal? The TS7 is a cheap pedal but I for one love it. Not enough gain for my metal but sounds wicked on my bass.

  • the best tube screamer out there In my opinion is the Maxon VOP-9.

    heads above the rest

(VOP- stands for Vintage Overdrive Pro)

  • Who says you can't play copyrighted material, YouTube..?

  • Honestly i don't like any of them, or maybe its just the dirty channel on the V3. To me, they really lacked a big thickness and presence, but if i had to pick from this video, the Dx is where it's at. Out of all of them, it's the thickest most natural sounding distortion. I didn't like the other two because they were to like..velvety and zappy and electronic sounding.

  • I think TS9 would be my first choice.

  • This is exactly what I needed. Thank you. Ordered TS9 :o) Hey toneKing.. Why don't you review Laboga - Mr.Hector. It's a bad ass amp

  • i go with the dx i like gear that does more than 1 thing

  • morley vs cry baby vs vox 847 :) PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • I think the right one sound way the best at The OD channel, The classic is by far the best at clean channel.

  • I think the TS9DX would be best for me. Usually, OD pedals suck out some of the bass of the guitar tone, and I think the DX in the higher-gain modes would add some of that bass back.

  • I've always preferred the standard TS9 - and after this excellent comparison video, I still do. A tube screamer makes nearly EVERY amp sound better... I use it all the time with amp tones in my GSP1101 as well.

  • TS 808 for me! Hey thought this was 30 pedals in thirty days! Your doing 2 to 3 at a time that makes it 60-90 pedals in 30 days! lol

  • @paulster14 true, true ... glad someone picked up on that :-).

  • hey tone king you were an influece for my guitar equipment..till your lastest videos same licks and everything i been watching you since i you started putting videos up but change it up a little bit.

  • @masterofpuppets986 Thx master ... I have to tell you bro - this ain't easy! See, I can't play copyrighted material, and coming up with 100% of my own stuff at 10 minute clips at a time, my originality runs dry at times. I have been working in some new licks (harmonic minors, legato licks, octave runs, etc.). Hopefully some folks picked up on em' :-) I'm trying!

  • @lmsjr does it make it copyright if you play those licks elsewhere on the board?

  • @lmsjr You can play copyrighted material as long as you do not get paid for these videos or in any way receive money for these reviews,

Oh and i remember that ive seen you play a riff of Mr. Crowley in one of ur earlier videos,

  • @lmsjr Good job brother, I really appreciate your videos.Bless from Sweden,

  • @lmsjr I liked the the ts9 the best.

    thanks

  • TS 9

  • TS-808 the original and still the best

  • I'd probably go for the DX just for the flexibility.

  • TS9DX

  • I have a TS9 and idont know maybe im using it wrong but i cant seem to get the sound i want from it...TS9 alone i mean

when i use in conjunction of an amp or other pedal it helps as a boost

  • I would agree that these ar best for pushing Marshalls and Like Fender amps

  • @akaboo69 TTK PAINT ONE RED AND YOU HAVE CHRISTMAS COLOURS LOL

  • Good old Crispy Cream TS808 tone for me. Perfect for for getting a creamy blues bite and provides about as much extra kick as I need on top of a dirty channel. Thanks for demoing more Ibanez gear.

  • TS9 all the way... I actually preferred the DX in front of the carvin, but I normally wouldn't push a high gain amp like that with a TS anyways, I find those amps usually stand on their own. Now if it were pushing that marshall, I have a feeling the TS9 would blow the others away...

  • I preferred the DX.

  • ts9

  • what about the TS7!!!!!!!!!!!! you need the Ts7!!!!! JK nice shoot out

  • IMO TS9DX is the winner all the way. Cheers!

  • I think that more than one pedal shoot out must have more time reviewing

  • i'm confused, i dont know my preference xD

  • what about them all on at the same time???

  • i got the 808 cause its just right for my songs

  • For Metal TS9.

    For Rock TS9Dx.

    For Blues TS808.
