@W3R3N0082 A nuke will produce a massive EMP pulse in addition to the nuke blast, but there are other ways to create a large EMP pulse without an atomic explosion.

In the climax of the movie Ocean's 11 they use an EMP pulse to shut down the Vegas electronics grid to get into the casino vault. Fun movie but I always worry about all the poor people with pacemakers or on life support in the hospital they killed with that thing, just to steal some money. :-(

@blink180heights A serious strategic EMP would require a high altitude nuclear blast, though. It's just a nuclear warhead exploded high up. And even if that wouldn't directly cause mortality, the secondary effects from inoperational hospitals, crashing trains, cars, etc., ruined economic and communications systems, etc. would effectively make it tantamount to mass murder.

The older cars would run. Newer car would have the solenoids fried out. Anything in a Faraday cage would be protected and work after the pulse, unless it relied on outside transmitters like cell phones, TV and internet.
