Disfrute!

  • I just found your video, and it is so out of the box for me, but I can hardly wait to try it. I love your idea about using tissue paper from gifts. I feel like as a paper crafter, reusing, just makes me feel a little bit better. Thanks for taking the time to share this technique.

  • @dee6lite2 So glad you enjoyed it! I think it is fun to try something every once in a while that is outside our comfort zone...and I totally agree - I lOVE when I can reuse or repurpose materials...gives them a new life and keeps them from just becoming more waste! Enjoy...I know you will have a great time!

  • Can hardly wait to try this technique. Thanks. Love how your cover came out.

  • @sandylandcrafter You are going to have so much fun! - would love to see what you come up with! Thanks for stopping by!

  • I had some nice results using your technique.

Would it be possible to do an image transfer on this layered background?

I am a bit worried about the tissue paper and don't want to wreck it!

  • @CatsandJournals YEAH! Glad you had good results - it is a favorite technique of mine. I think you would be fine doing an image transfer as long as you sealed it with multi-medium - which you have probably done in the creation of the collage itself. Fun idea...got my creative brain kicked into high gear.

  • This is such a great technique. You created a beautiful background and made me feel like I could do it too :) Thank you so much. Happy new year to you!!!! Looking forward to watching more of your videos, this is my first peak at your videos on you tube. Would be nice if you could please share your website/blog link too :)

  • @rkramadh Yeah! I am so glad you liked it! It is one of my favorite "go to" techniques...and you really CAN do it! I do have a blog YouTube is weird about printing links - so if you add dot com on the end of this you should be able to get there... jannsstory.blogspot Would love for you to stop by!

  • What a really cool effect, tfs

  • @KimScrapper Yeah...glad you liked it. Appreciate you stopping by - have a Happy New Years!

  • Thank you so much - this is very inspiring and helpful. Beautiful work!

  • @mermafly Thank you so much for stopping by and watching my video! Glad it gave you some inspiration for your own art...it is one of my favorite "go to" techniques and I am sure it will become one of yours too! Merry Christmas!

  • This is simply beautiful...wow...thank you for sharing...Sheree (Downunder)

  • @Scrapsassy1959 Thank you! I hope you have some fun playing around with it yourself! Let me know if I can answer any questions! Have a great week!

  • Thank you so much for doing this tutorial. It really helped me out a lot.

    Laurie

  • @altamoab Laurie...I am so glad that you enjoyed this tutorial...hope you have fun creating your own collage! Thanks for stopping by!

  • very gooood i love it~

  • Thank you- I love it that you say you cant make a mistake...its that thought that holds me back when create...oh what if I ruin it...you made a great clear vid and I learnt alot form it ...gonna keep watching you.

  • Thank you- I love it that you say you cant make a mistake...its that thought that holds me back when create...oh what if I ruin it...you made a great clear vid and I learnt alot form it ...gonna keep watching you.

  • Jann, I am so glad I found you tonite with this video....LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!! Thank you...I will be using this on many new projects!!! Joyce

  • I LOVE this technique!! Thank you SO much for the tutorial. Does this technique work on canvas? Have a Blessed day ~~ Dawn

  • @petrii1998 Absolutely Dawn....I would definitely use a coat of gesso on the canvas to begin...but it works very well on canvas. Hope you have some fun creative time! Blessings, Jann

  • I love this... what kind of paint did you use/

  • @modernman5 Here are the products I used: Mod Podge (PVA glue works too), Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist (which is a combination of dye ink, water and mica powder), Adirondak Acrylic Paint Dabbers. Hope that helps - let me know if I can be of any assistance or you have additional questions. Have a great week!

  • super bravo

    md

  • @mathoceti Thanks so much!

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 I tried the PVA with water trick earlier and it seemed to work okay! It's quite annoying having to work to a theme, but I can't wait to start making things for family and friends :) I really think home-made gifts are so much better than shop-bought. The care that goes into them is just amazing!

  • @naah Yeah - I am so glad it worked! I agree...hand-made gifts are so much better. You will have a fantabulous time making them too! Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • I'm definitely going to use some of these tips for my college work :D

One question though, does anyone know if Mod Podge is available in the UK? If not, is there an alternative that can be used? Thanks :D

  • @naah That is terrific! I love hearing that people get a bit of inspiration for their own artwork when they see one of my videos. I think Mod Podge is available in the UK - but I have also heard people say that they use PVA glue the same way as I use Mod Podge....and I do think that is pretty available throughout the UK and Europe. If it is too thick, you can slightly water it down a bit....but know that adding water will possibly cause your paper to crinkle a bit more. Hope that helps.

  • Hi Jann! Great to find your YT channel! I am learning a lot watching your videos!

    ~Jeanne~newbie to mixed media!

  • @homeschmomof4 Hey Jeanne...so glad you are finding some inspiration! I am sure that even as a "newbie" that you are having a wonderful time creating mixed media art....it is just so much fun! For me the key is to see it as PLAY...and to learn to be happy with the unexpected outcomes...those are sometimes the BEST!

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 Thanks Jann for the encouragement. You videos have really opened up a lot of fun techniques to try. Just got a hold of some wallpaper from my friend/neighbor just yesterday! I am planning to play a lot more with the summer coming on and almost done with homeschooling till Sept.! ;-)

  • @homeschmomof4 I think my wallpaper stash is one of my FAVORITE supplies....since I can slop paint all over it and not feel like I am risking MESSING up a canvas! Discovering it is what allowed me to move from being tentative with my creativity - to being abandoned....and I MUCH prefer creating with abandon! I know that homeschooling can really require a LOT of time, energy and creativity too...know you will be glad to have a bit of a break over the summer. Can't wait to see what you create!

  • love this...thank you so much! this is sooo like what i do. i LOVE pattern paper (have probably a hundred). I found vintage vogue patterns. I even use them on cards. Makes them look very french. ;) then sewing on it even takes it to that next level. I wish I would've taken pics of the journals that I have made. Thanks for this... amazing! Gave me even more ideas to try and incorporate into my process. ;)

  • @babyblueagle1 Oh I wish you HAD taken pictures - I would have loved to have seen your journals - they sound fantabulous! Thanks so much for your encouragement - I greatly appreciate it.

  • I am just now starting to get into Mixed Media Art. Thanks for taking the time to do this tutorial.

  • @Dare2bme71 So glad it was helpful. I think the key is to try and "play" like a 5 year old...who thinks everything they do is refrigerator worthy! Enjoy!

  • hey is that you use regular glue or is this a special kind of glue? ps. you're awesome

  • this is such a cool way to make a cover or a hanging. i love it espically since there is little planing (tearing paper & such). i am not a perfect scrapper, so this is great & i have all the stuff to do it with. thank you

  • @denared I am a BIG FAN of the non-planning aspect of this technique....let me know how it goes for you!

  • Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge gave it a go on a small board last night using blues and printed text, alright for a first go although do need to add some flourishes and gold so maybe will look better.

  • @teakaz123 I would love to see what you came up with - it is such a fun (easy) way to get fabulous results that are different every time! Glad you gave it a go!

  • Jann, this is AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • @brooknrich Thanks Brook...it is a very fun technique. It is my "fall back" for a cover on a mini!

  • Thank you so much!!! You've really helped and inspired me to create!!!!!

  • @SattySatty3 Well thank you! I have a LOT of fun -- and really enjoy sharing the fun with others. Come back for another visit real soon!

  • Loved the the whole idea ..what exactly is modgepodge!!!! dont think we have it in the uk, it has inspired me ,thank you

  • @mssuedancer100 I think that folks in the UK call it PVA glue, It is really just a watered down glue that has a little bit more "open" time than thicker white clear drying glue. Mod Podge comes in lots of variations...shiny, matte, for paper, glow in the dark etc. you could also use gel medium as a good substitute. Hope this helps.

  • This is beautiful

  • @kkksol Thank you so much!

  • where can u find those delicious sprays?? =)

  • @aquaprin They are called Tattered Angle Glimmer Mists. I got mine on Bluemoon Scrapbooking....there is a link to the store on my blog...jannstory.blogspot.com

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 thanks!!

  • Wow this is Geogeous and TFS.

  • @barrettyk Thank you so much! Appreciate you stopping by!

  • Oh Yeah! Alway happy to help a fellow artist! Let me know how it comes out. Happy New year!

  • Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou .... I told my sister her Christmas present was on I.O.U because i hadn't finished it, when in actual fact i hadn't started it ..SHHHH !!!. I absolutely adore this medium and you have given me the inspiration i needed to make her something WONDERFUL !!!!

Your videos and tutorials are fantastic ...HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

  • Great video. Thank you for sharing your talent and techniques.

  • @janicescherer So glad you enjoyed it....and I am glad to share what I am doing -- cause I love being inspired by all the other artists here too! Appreciate you stopping by!

  • Beautiful..!! Love it...Thanks for sharing the idea... :)

  • @Shubhangic Why thank you so much! It is a fun and "playful" technique that gives great results. Hope you have some time to play with it yourself!

  • Thank you for your most excellent video demonstrating how you create your mixed media collage book covers. You made it look soooo easy:-) Your selection of the various images were seamlessly well-placed to create a lovely cohesive visually piece of art. I look forward to more of your teaching videos. Also, thank you for reminding us that in mixed media there are “no mistakes"-many times these serendipitous “mistakes” occur to teach us a new artistic lesson/direction.

    Well done!

    Choyce2020

  • @Choyce2010 Thank you so much! I really want people to see that the basic techniques are SUPER easy -- and that they can just relax and PLAY -- it is NEVER going to turn out how you pictured it in your mind...but it might just be BETTER! I really appreciate your encouragement!

  • i really enjoyed your video. the book covers are really cool and unique. my question is how do you assemble the complete book. how does the cover connect to the pages that then connect to the back cover. it would be great if you could do a video on that. 'how to make a hardback art journal.'

  • @TwistedBlueMind I will work on doing some more binding technique vids...thanks for asking! Have a great week!

  • eeeeeeeeeeooooooooowuh.......more french tip nails.... ; P nope...can't watch

  • @Trags21 Absolutely! I use this technique on wood ALL the time. I would prime the wood with some gesso - just to save you from all your paint, mod podge or whatever medium from overly soaking into the wood. Have fun -- would love to see what you end up with!

  • would you be able to do this on wood with the same effect?

I wanted to do it on a paddle for my big (sorority)

  • WOW! Thank you so much for doing this tutorial! I just found out about glimmer mist a couple weeks ago and LOVE collage and cannot wait to make one!

  • This is great! Never used ModgePodge before, but I always wondered how to get textures like that. Can you paint over it to get that same effect, as opposed to spraying the glimmer mist?

  • @suicideskwid You really can't paint over it and get the SAME effect...because -- the spraying is done while the mod podge is WET...and it is the mixing of the two wet mediums that make it translucent. You could wait until the mod podge is dry and then really water down some paint (or dilute it with glazing medium) and paint it with that and get a similar look.... But you don't have to use glimmer mist -- any liquid ink diluted with water and sprayed over the wet MP will give a cool result

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 Thanks a bunch! Yeah, that makes sense. I just bought an empty spray bottle. Gonna see what happens when I spray coffee :)

  • @suicideskwid Oh I would love to hear what your results are with the coffee!

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 I ended up putting the MP on hold and opted for molding paste to build texture. I used two spray bottles on the wet paste, one w coffee, one w ink wash. I was rather pleased w the results. Sorta had this rock-like, fossil-esque look to it. Thanks for your advice!

  • great video... remember it's MOD Podge and also its pronounced that way... (not "modge"). but most importantly, have fun with it.

  • Fantastic, must get me some modge podge!

  • @Nellyli1 Your crafting will NEVER be the same! *smile*

  • This is great!! I'm responding under my husbands name I'm sure he will love that.. Going to try it right now.. going to look at the rest of your videos over the next little while.. thank you

  • @Demius7 Glad you stopped by - whether under your name or your husband's - just happy to have a new crafty friend!

  • Thank you for this great tutorial! I been wanting this information to get started on my own projects. Your work is beautiful.

  • @SnowSylvia I know you will make some beautiful things.

  • Thank you for this great tutorial. I've wanting this information so I can do this, but didn't know where to start. Your work is beautiful

  • Awesome! The tip about the solvent ink was great! You rawk!...;)

  • @julzabro Oh wow...thank you so much! I really appreciate it -- Hope you will use this technique in your own art...I know you will create something FABULOUS!

  • I am so pleased I watched this - it's given me some much-needed inspiration! Thanks for sharing

  • @LusciousLuce Oh I am so glad you were inspired! I know you will create something gorgeous!

  • is there a tutorial on the flowers?

  • This is so great! I love collages. I want to start this technique. Tomorrow will run to the shop to buy all the necessary tools. Thanks for giving so much interesting details how to make the work more attractive!!

  • Oh, this is awesome, I'm so lifting this for my book covers. Thanks for the tips.

  • Great technique and tutorial! Thanks so much got sharing!

  • thanks. It was really great.

  • thank you, love this video. I have been looking at tons but none like this. I am looking for something to cover a notebook and or book, will this work on the spine? WIll it be flexible enough? thank you

  • @zendoodles You might want to check out my video called "Painting and Collage Tutorial" -- it has another technique that results in a more flexible material that would be great for creating your spine. It shows how to use a scrap piece of wallpaper -- the technique would also work with a piece of fairly thick material too (like duck or twill). Hope this helps!

  • So glad I found your channel. I love this technique. I look forward to watching more of your vids.

  • @sharoncaillier Thank you so much...I am hoping to have some new things to share soon. My internet was knocked out with all the flooding -- so I am only able to upload from my phone....but I am working on some new things -- and when I get the internet back at home -- I will have several things to share...so WATCH OUT! LOL

  • Hi Jann! Loved this video!! I have seen the finished product of something like this and could understand how it was made but it was fascinating to see you do it! Is your brown craft sheet by Ranger? How big do you think it is? I saw these pink craft sheets that I loved that were very expensive at CHA but they seemed flimsy in person. Is your kind of flimsy? Does it just wipe right off? (20 questions, LOL)

  • @MsTClaiborne I LOvE my craft sheet! It is from Ranger and is about 18" x 24". It is really thin and NOTHING sticks to it. It is also heat resistant so I can emboss or use my glue gun on it and just is the easiest thing to clean up. The only thing you can't do on it is cut with your craft knife. You should watch the Flowerstoflourishes. Com website as they sell them for less than $10. They just have one deal a day so you have to check every day.

  • Great video! What type of modpodge do you use? ( There seem to be many types available.) I'd love to see a tutorial on bindings.....please :~)

  • @9doves

Thanks for stopping by! I typically use the original Matte version...although I own a couple of the others, I just come back to the basic. There is a SHIMMER version that is nice to mix a bit of acrylic paint into....but I really can do that by spraying it with some glimmer mist -- or dusting perfect pearls on it later. I do prefer the Matte to the GLOSS -- but that is just personal preference.

  • Jan, that must be the term for when I craft---collage, because I never plan anything out! That is the best way to do crafts for me...Thanks for your inspiration!! Carlene aka PinkScrapper99

  • @pinkscrapper99 Hey Carlene...I love the process of "just creating" - not having a set plan...I love the surprise of the process....I so enjoy watching what you come up with!

  • Imagine all the fun we would have if we could scrap together! :> Maybe someday!

  • Oooo...that would be great fun!

  • That is so neat - I'd love to try it!

  • Beautiful work! I am always looking for new ideas and will definitely try this! You had mentioned that you coated the board with something first and I can't make the name out from the video. Could you please tell me the name of the product. Thanks!

  • @scrapmom65 Thanks so much for stopping by. When I have raw chipboard that I am going to be working with -- or something that is a slick surface -- I paint on a coat of GESSO....just to give it a bit of "tooth" and to keep the surface even for applying the collage. There are lots of brands -- I have used just about all of them and can't tell them apart really...

  • that is awesome!! Thank you so much for posting all the tips and techniques, I'll have to watch this one a few more times and take notes lol

    StephanieD

  • Stephanie....watch just enough to give yourself some confidence...but then attack it like a 4 year old would a blank canvas....no fear of messing it up....just the joy of putting new things down and creating something beautiful@! Please let me know how it goes!

  • WOW ...... love the technique. Thanks for sharing. Joyce

  • Joyce...you will have a ton of fun....please let me know how it goes!

  • Great tutorial. Thanks for walking through the process. I can't wait to try it!

  • @mskimlouise I know you will have a fun time...would love to see what you create!

  • Wow!!!!!!!!! that came out AWESOME!!

Love your channel... thank you.. for sharing ..

  • You just never know how it will turn out -- for me that is part of the fun! Thanks so much for stopping by and your kind words....they mean a lot to me!

  • Absolutely stunning! I love collages!! Thanks for this tutorial - back to my local craft store AGAIN! TFS!

  • @alwaysfriendli I am sure it is going to be FANTABULOUS! Be sure and share!

  • Love it!!! I will be trying this technic soon!

  • love this technique...i used to do it n don't know why i stopped lol TFS :)

  • @KraftyKatsy oh do start again!

  • Love, Love all your video's! I certainly amm inspired to get back into being more creative! Thanks for the great Video!

    Evelyn

  • Evelyn...your message just made me so happy! Last fall I was in a bit of a creative funk....and I took a class that sparked my creativity again...so this feels a bit like a"pay it forward" opportunity. Would love to see some of what you come up with...most of all HAVE FUN!

  • Love this technique. Going to give it a try. TFS

    Donna

  • What a fantastic technique! I'm going to try it now. It looks so beautiful and simple! TFS!

  • This is so helpful! I've been saving my tissue paper but didn't know what for....just figured it was good for something.....someday!!!! Thanks for doing this!!!! I love inprecise techniques.....this is great and yours turned out sooo pretty!

  • Hey Kathy -- thanks for stopping by....I love the "surprise" you get at the end of this technique....and while it is never something I planned...I am almost always delighted with the results. Let me know how yours goes!

  • Hi Jann

You did an awesome job on the collage cover. It looks sooooooo cool. Congrats! I will be scraplifting this idea lol. TFS :)

  • Thank you so much! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

  • I loved, loved, loved this technique! It came out simply beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • You are so sweet! Thank you for your encouragement. I enjoyed reading your profile -- it sounds like we have a lot of things in common! Have a great weekend!

  • thank you so much for taking us through how you got the final result! can;t wait to try this out :)

  • Thanks for stopping by! You are super creative -- loved watching your "masking technique" video...can't wait to see what you do with this....so many possibilities!

  • i love it thanks so much for the tutorial u are so talented and creative im so inspired to try one out lol TFS!!!

  • Oh YEAH! Let me know how it comes out...I know it will be gorgeous! Appreciate your encouragement so much!

  • love it, Jann, I even liked it before you misted and stamped. Why didn't you post this Wednesday!?? I tossed some long-saved tissue paper on Thursday. What is that woman stamp, I like it.

    roxy

  • Hey Roxy! I liked it too without the misting....I went ahead with that step primarily to show how I got the results on the book cover that I sent to Karen....but you are so right -- it can look totally cool without it.

And you have just articulated why I have WAY more "stuff" in my studio than it can comfortably hold! The MINUTE I decide I can actually part with something is when I discover a CREATIVE way to use it! Sorry to do that to you.

The stamp is from FiveGreenGoldfish on ETSY.

  • OMGosh...today, I used my never opened Mod Podge for the first time! I loved it! Thanks for this tutorial and for being such an inspiration!!! Hugs, Rita

  • I can't wait to see what you made Miss Rita! Do share it with us -- I am sure it is gorgeous!

  • Stamping on tissue paper is something I did not know about. I liked how it turned out! I am inspired to try this. Thank you. Coleen.

  • I am always looking for ways to use stuff that I already have....if it isn't nailed down in my house...it is fair game! Thank you for your encouragement...I am super glad that this inspired you! Please share what you come up with!

  • This is the same as some of the altered art classes I have taken! Looks like scrapbook minis and altered art are coming together. Love the process!

  • I love that the lines can be crossed -- it gives all of us more options for creativity don't you think?

  • Absolutely! You have an awesome talent and creativity! Like I said, I just love the process!

  • Such an awesome idea!!! Love it!!!!

  • Dear Jann:

Your tutorial is AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing with us your technique and for taking the time to respond to my comments.

    best regards,

    Wanda C.

  • Wanda...thank you so much for your encouragement! I was a little nervous doing this one...not sure if folks would like just "watching the process" -- but I couldn't figure out a way to do it in 10 minutes (collage isn't difficult but it does take a bit of time). I am thinking about doing another one to show how I create journal (or mini book) covers with paint, collage and stamping....what do you think about that?

  • I love the music and I love the video. Oh I like to use glue and stuff, too, to glue stuff together. I like collaging. Nice to meet you!

  • Thanks Regina! I think collaging is a great way to "break out" of a creative block...just feels like {play} -- which all art should feel like anyway! Appreciate you stopping by!

  • stunning... loved watching you work. Thanks for sharing.

  • Gorgeous technique!! Into favorites! :)

  • That was fun to watch. TFS!!! love to see more.

  • that is soooo beautiful...tfs... :)

  • ohhhh I love it!! Thanks so much for sharing with us!! I can't wait to give this a try!! I love that stamp of the lady!!

  • Thanks so much! I got that stamp at an Etsy shop called FiveGreenGoldfish. She has fun vintage images.

  • thanks so much !!

  • Jann,

This tutorial was awesome! I love how the cover turned out. You got my wheels turning!

    Yolanda

  • What a great tutorial, thanks so much for sharing, this is another technique i'd love to try out :-)

  • WOW!!! This is absolutely stunning and I SOOOO appreciate the tutorial, I cannot WAIT to try it!

    You are very artistic!

  • Gorgeous! Did you use a book cover for a mini or was I just seeing things?

  • I did show one book cover that I used this collage technique on -- it was for a travel journal, But the others were just chipboard that I used to create a cover for a mini-album. THe finished project from today's tutorial is going to be a mini-album cover for a girlfriend of mine.

  • Thanks for sharing

  • beautiful! thanks for the tut!
