  • wonderful picture of a way of life gone forever - does anybody have a picture of BILL DAISY selling cockles and whelks on his stall opposite the shipwrights arms in the 1950's?

  • So sad to see Ramsgate be come the arm pit of the world. I am born & bread in Ramsgate & the place in a mess now. Nothing to be proud of anymore!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you, thats me in one of the pictures aged about 8, I remember it well, we had many day trips and a couple of family holidays there in the 60's and 70's. So sad to see its all gone. I remember the archery and it was always the same lady there, very friendly, and the helter skelter with the pit you ended up in, what a laugh.

  • It's so sad to see what Ramsgate has become. I wish I had been alive back in the day to see it all, looks like a different place.

  • Whoever took the picture of the 'Clock Tower' being pushed over after Pleasurama burnt down must have been standing next to me as I remember watching it!

    very Sad!

Thanet Council have done really well haven't they!!..........All those lovely things in Ramsgate, Margate and the surrounding area to bring in the Tourists.....and just neglected!.....what a complete bunch of overpaid wasters!

..........oh but there is the 'Turner Centre'!!!!????.......talk about the WRONG people in the WRONG jobs

  • ........... Wake up Thanet Council! .....while you take 'Back-handers' and are busy lining your pockets...Rome Burns!.....and you still can't understand why less and less people want to visit!....there's nothing left, the Hearts have been ripped out of Ramsgate & Margate! So very very sad!

  • I was at school in Ramsgate, East Court on Victoria Parade. I was there from the age of 9 until I as 14. even then I could sense something really sad about the place. \ I remember looking at all the old photographs of the pool and the Railway and wishing I had seen the place in its prime, I still loved it there, the sea the long walks along the beach and amazing rain storms.

  • I think it is so sad to see what a bustling vibrant place this town was and not that long ago either to see the cold depressing miserable place it has become now......... You have caught the very essence of the town today :(

  • @fizzipop189 same as margate with bembom brothers etc mate.. I used to spend every day of my summer as a kid at pleasureama etc in ramsgate with my cousins etc, i lived in broadstairs so went there all the time and margate for bembom brothers, its sad isnt it? it used to be so packed and just a fantastic fun place for everyone to be, now its mostly shops and shit. Thats the only way to describe the entire area of thanet. shit. greed is the reason and Jimmy G is an arsehole.

  • @fizzipop189 ramsgate is a dump, margate is a dump, its sad isnt it. Used to be so alive and just so vibrant as you say. I dont think we wil ever see those days again but what pisses me off is that my kids will never see it at all, period. Anyway great upoad, its so nice to see vids of the good old days, shame about after that.,

  • Whoever said Louie is dead is a MASSIVE liar..............my mate just posted a pic of him on facebook and he looks very much alive!!

  • I was there on holiday just 2 days ago...I never knew the history of Ramsgate Main sands...and it is quite sad to realise it is a shadow of what it once was. Even the sheltered area where we usually eat our fish and chips (from Peter's Fish Factory of course) is now boarded up and inaccessable.....I just hope things improve. As an outsider I see that Ramsgate (and indeed Thanet as a whole) has such enormous potential. Thank you for posting the video.

  • lived in ramsgate all my life, used to be a great place, now a dump, can't wait to move!!!!!!!

  • My family used to holiday every year in Ramsgate during the 70's, I would have been in my pre to early teens and have great memories of the place. Pleasurama and the model viilage were great places for kids. It really is so very sad to see the decline. Thank you for putting this on you tube.

  • I went here in 1979 when it was pleasurerama, from the sand front you could see the dodgems helter skelter and waltzer as well as that great harbour. I never got to see the model village though. It so winds me up that all the great things in life have to change, when it was already fab to begin with.

  • Jimmys godden's a C**T

  • Jimmy "untouchable" godden. What a ****. He must be a hypnotist or something as ALL his failures end in fires. And no police or insurance company can see this. Hmmmmm And now he has a new arcade on Margate seafront, might be Gap MK2 within 6 months.

  • @womblediehard You don't know anything about thanet clearly you dick head, it is a brilliant place it's people like you that make it a bad place go back to Surrey if it's that bad!

  • @IKazzahLegend have you ever left the planet Thanet? You wouldnt know a brilliant place if it bit you on the arse. Now as being a dick head you must be one of the chavs iv'e described as that's the local attitude, all gob shite. If you read my post properly which you didnt so can only leave me with the conclusion you have learning difficulties. Now get someone to read it for you if you have trouble, and by the way the town is decaying and rotting and you call that excellent you plumb.

  • does anybody read or seen on news ,about margates mayor, illtreating and killing his little kitten,150 fleas on its poor little body. not one drop of blood left in it, WHY O WHY is he stioll mayor.PLEASE PEOPLE OF THANET ,GET RID AND DO IT FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • louey died and his ashes were sprinked over the old pleasurama.

  • I remember Louey, black suit big hair always in the arcades.People thought he was weird but he was alright, he gave me some money so i could play the Tron game years back. RIP LOUEY.

  • @yougit23 I still see him walking around town :)

  • lol this is a amazing video its a shame that its only got worser id love to see it back in the old days it would be amazing

  • Used to live in Royal road right next to christ church school when I was 9, loved going down to seafront after school. that was back in 1969. Been back once in 2000. Ramsgate council should hold their heads in shame for the destruction and apathy they have wraught.

    Peter

  • Yes quite. I've lived here in Ramsgate all my life and I can say that it's only got worse: the town and the seafront a shadows of former glory back in the 60's. Much of the seafront is just used for car parking space -and the time they're completely empty as there's very little along the seafront to attract tourists. I'd blame our local MP Dr Ladyman. Shame on him

  • Does anyone remember a Band from years back Called Burnt Ash Playing at the Royal Victoria Pavillion for the Summer Season 1976 I think?

  • very good video thankyou.

  • I speak for everyone here when I say, I miss the old Thanet; no chavs, more things to do and altogether a better place to live. Now look at it :S What a shame.

    Lovely music :)

  • We used to come down here and Cliftonville every summer back in the '70's and it breaks my heart to see how everything has changed. I knew about that the old Rly stn at Ramsgate Sands but I never was aware of the funfair built there afterwards. Still maybe the new Dreamland with all the Heritage rides proposed may go some way to address the balance...if it actually happens that is :(

  • Brilliant history of how thanet council have let Ramsgate die. All that destruction and apathy over the past 30 years. Still there should soon be a concrete carbuncle on Margate seafront as a memorial to their ineptitude!

  • its so unbelivable how much ramsgate has changed

  • A well prepared illustration of changing times ! ( did someone mention the master of destruction Jimmy Godden? ) maybe not... the old railway tunnel still exists from Dumpton Park on the mail line to the blocked up end at the harbour... how about a video expl;oration of that as well !

  • I used to live at Baker's, aka Harrison's Restaurant, for two years, while I worked at Tiberius Casino... How sad it looks now. :-(. I loved my 20 formative years in Ramsgate, visiting every pub, and finding hidden gems, like The Flowing Bowl... Now distant memories... How I hate getting older... Thank goodness for Broadstairs!!! So far!!!

  • Portovechios mentioned Harrisons Cafe, a trip to Ramsgate would not be complete without going to Harrisons Cafe! Their Milk Shakes were to die for and flavours you could get, Orange, Lemon, Lime. In my head I can still see the lady who used to work on the till sitting on her swivel chair! Happy Days indeed, I hope one day that Ramsgate will once again be the wonderful resort that it was in the 60s and 70s.

  • Blimey, that's a devastating dissolve when the famous Baths gets turned into a carpark! I've been researching a swimming pool complex here in Sydney (Australia) named the Ramsgate Baths ( long ago demolished for a supermarket) and it was inspired by the renown of Ramsgate England as a bathing spot,

  • Hey . Thanks for an awesome video! used to holiday there every year with parents in 70's then went there with my mates in our cars! Remember Louey well!! what happenened to him?? Dont ever give up on the town, all it takes is people who care (and a lot of money) anything can be turned around , the good times will be back !

    Thanks again ,

  • Hey,my memories of the seafront in the 80s were great and always will be but it's still very nice in a modern way, miss the neons everywhere and the smell of donuts and hotdogs, and Louis hair! I was there.....riding our 50s up and down and banging the penny flipper for some fag money..Neros,rockafellas,Manhatten Stardust, 5th Avenue & Harrisons...Model Village.......boohoo boohoo

  • this is very tear jerking! im 21 and unfortunatly dont know if any different to how it is at the moment, apart from pleasurama being there as i had my birthday partys there, i remember it being on fire! but the storys my dad has told me and to of finaly seen pictures of how it used to be! my god how could this of happened. Same goes for Margate! we need some life put back into this place. cos it can be beautiful!

  • This countrys Governments aka "The Crown" has litually taken apart our country and left us with nothing but FAST FOOD CHAINS AND PUBS!!!

Any entertainment for the public has been destroyed!!!

  • Great video and music by the way. What a chance missed that the land will be replaced by houses. Oh yes, that will bring the visitors in.

  • Jimmy Godden singlehandedly destroyed the amusement and tourist industries in Ramsgate, Margate and Folkestone. Like a plague, he has swept through killing the towns and rendering them pointless to visit.

  • so true.

  • What a dump, compared to the way I remember Ramsgate and Margate in the 60 and 70s

I for one will not be returning for a pleasure trip

Many thanks for posting great video

  • How nice did the outdoor swimming pool look by the way?? There isn't much for holidaymakers to do in Thanet. There are a few nice pubs but that's about it. You should send this to the lame and arrogant Thanet Council

  • Ramsgate is still thriving I think Margate and Cliftonville has died on its arse the most. Yeah a few shops have gone from Ramsgate but the harbour is so so lush :) they got bars and restaurants down there its all good.... I am sad about Pleasurama used to go in there circa 1992 - 1997 nearly every saturday blowing me pocket money.. always used to see 2p Louie on the slot machines too ahhh memories

  • Haha, everyone who went to pleasurama knew louie.

Always the same coat and hair. he's straight from the 70's hahaha.

  • The downfall of Ramsgate has happened soo fast. Im 23 and it really was a much nicer place when i was younger. Ha even when i was just 16 it was a nice place!!!! I dont live there anymore and havent for a few years but everytime i go back more shops seem to have closed down and been borded up :(

  • Great video. It's sad to see how the Kent coast has declined, Ramsgate, Margate, Folkestone and Dover all relics of what they once were.

  • very well made...

  • Very well done I walk my dog along there most mornings and I will take alot more interest. Its also very sad to see how much has changed for the worse.

  • Did alot of growing up in pleasurama when i were in me teens! I used to lose my pocket money there EVERY weekend! Then, i remember the night it burnt down - i had to cook 500 Big Mac meals with only a handful of others at the mackyD's drive thru in westwood for the fire brigade! Great Days! ...great days...

  • Very nice, though sad! The transitions between the pictures "before and after" was really cool. ^_^
