@dunbustin They are smoke rockets used to measure shock waves. They use the comparison of pre- and peri-detonation film sequences to calculate blast effects.
I'm also very interested in this. I have not seen this on archive[dot]org which is pretty much the only source I know for nuclear stock footage. ancjr, would you please reply to this matter. Any hints on where you got this from are appreciated.
I m afraid the only reason you ve haven t seen this footage on any nuclear weapons testing releted vids is that this is not a nuclear devise detonated just a load of conventional highly explotive matterial equal to 500 tons of TNT... I ve been looking for that vid for quite some time, really fascinating sinse it was recorded from short distance, no fear of radiation contamination you see...
yeah, but this was in the cold war era, nuclear blast damage scaling and so forth, would have expected to see some sort of a "commander's report" on this operation, as detonation 1.5 kilotons of high explosives (sailor hat was 3 individual detonations of 500 tons piles of TNT IIRC) is quite substantial.
Plus you can check it on wiki there s a small article about this and see the related video: Sailorhat Super Blast 4 - 500 Tonnes (With Slow-Motions) quite more comprehensive! Take care nuker1337, i enjoyed some of your videos myself!

I'm glad we nuked Japan. It was the best thing that could have happen. It brought them out of the "stoneage". maybe we should do the same to Iran or North Korea or Berkeley California.

What a moron. This test was done to determine the effects of a nuclear blast, without the harmful effects of a nuclear detonation. The data gathered here makes our armed forces MUCH more ready to deal with such an event. Knowing what will happen means our forces are prepared for such an event, while others aren't. Not being prepared for something like this... now THAT is "frightening".
Isn't this the bomb test on Kaho'olawe? If it is, they stopped like 40 years ago so y'all shut up. I am going there with my class to plant... plants. :D
Boo hoo Franky, fricking tests like this go on all the time, it ain't going to stop because you have a shitty in your pants, just a few days ago we did a test on the HMCS Huron fuck off.
wow what a buntch of mother fucker "Oh! Lets use Nuclear to destroid ship. Oh! lets use Nuclear to blow town. Oh! Lets use Nuclear to blow sub" damm i wich Usa dint win any war... that clean a lot of shit like that... but noo... now they tink the world belong to them.

50 years ago, what few (compared to today) electronic circuits were present were built using electron tubes. Relatively speaking, they are almost impervious to EMP compared to transistors. Instrumentation and control systems were largely mechanical, not electronic, to begin with.
Surface detonations of nuclear weapons do not cause an EMP. The nuclear explosions you hear about that fries electronic equipment through an EMP happens only high up in the atmosphere. Look up "EMP" on Wikipedia.
Yeah this is like 50 years old. We are responsible enough to understand this is unacceptable. You can't blame the present population for our forefathers. Must be French.

Normal explosions can make an EMP theirs a video on here of the BBC in Afghanistan and a 1000LB bomb shuts off their cameras with the EMP.

I think they are there before the explosion.

Hey, ancjr, where did you get this footage, if you don't mind me asking? Is it in the public domain?

I'm surprised that that helicopter wasn't blown out of the sky by the EMP...and I wonder how well their electrical instruments fared, lol

@IrishBarFight: The explosion was a Sailorhat explosion, 500 tons of TNT. No nuke here, so no EMP possible.

@IrishBarFight
That was 500 tons of TNT,. so not nuclear, and no electromagnetic pulse.
