Well DUUUUHHH! Has the Big Pharma sponsored psychiatric pseudoscience gotten embedded into the culture so strong that we all assume that all of our personality traits, thinking and behaviors are deciding at birth (or even conception)? Many more people these days believe that but anyone whose not an idiot knows that *WE ALL* are products of conditioning and a child will become what you raise it to be.
From my knowledge Bandora's theory of aggression did not consist of seeing positive or negative reinforcement or punishment on their 'model' and their behaviour came as a direct result from their models actions, not their following treatment.
@maxgriff11 Bandura conducted many variations on this procedure to try and isolate they key determinants of social learning. The one you're quoting is one of his earlier studies but he later extended this to look at the influence of observed rewards and punishment (as in the vid).
@maxgriff11 from what I've read from Bandura's work this did happen in his 1965 experiment. It appears as though he replicated the experiment on several occassions but perhaps with different variables.
They were less agressive probably because the hitting in this case was intended to decrease the behavior of bullying. Looking at strictly from an operant conditioning point of view it's positive punishment. meaning an annoying stimulus was added to decrease a behavior.
the kids could probably tell that the hitting in a bullying agressive manner got the man in trouble, so they want to avoid trouble so they were less agressive.
Great and well done. I am studying Bandura right now and this really helped out a lot. Words can be so dry and you all worked it out in a funny manner.
haha luv this video!! when the teacher was explaining to us about bandura was propa boring then she stuck this video on got our attention was sooo funny!
hey, thanks for this! had to look for this for part of my course which we're doin on Violence in media. =D Great vid and whatsername, he is definately right on this! we're doin the Bandura (1965) study atm x
Some people take video's way too seriously.. just wanted to say this video propa made me chuckle out loud. I especially loved the comments u shout at the doll. "Pow, boomboom right in the nose, sokaroo, stay down, fi away," and the proffessors responce, "what the bloody hell, ur a bully"
I think YOU'LL find that the study you're quoting here and below is Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961) where 72 children saw REAL LIFE adults, not films of adults. This is the less known Bandura (1965) where he wanted to test if aggression would be imitated if it was seen not in real life, but on T.V. It was an extension of the original study to assess the potential effects of media violence.
well excuse me for trying to find some video footage for extra research for my psychology course and coming up with this.....dont fucking blame me blame the course...
i'm writing a research paper arguing against the theory that violent music influences violent behavior. i'm having a hard time trying to counter the results from this experiment because it totally goes against my thesis. any advice of how to relate this information but still convince my reader of my original theory?
well, each person reacts differently when exposed to different things. You could argue that this experiment was conducted on children [who havent developed an identity of their own, who havent been nutured to know what is excepted in society] Not everyone that watched this video immediately takes a hammer and hits a moving object Yes each individual is open to interpret things around the world, but ultimately they conform to the rules of society some don't. If you would like any more help msg me
I think i'd go down the route criticising the study. It's basically a lab experiment so there's a number of issues that potentially invalidate results. It lacks ecological validity (unnatural environment = unnatural behaviour), doesn't control a number of extraneous variables and is subject to loads of demand chacteristics. In a nutshell, the behaviour seen by the participants may not be natural. Not enough space to give you a full explanation but msg me and i'll give you more info to clarify.
its not really that accurate because when the adult was beating the BoBo doll in the original experiment it was 5ft tall and child got the 3ft doll. the doll in this vid seems too short.
Fair enough, but Bandura also didn't use an inflatable referee that was produced for the 2006 world cup, but i think that we're being pedantic. It's difficult to get my hands on a Bobo doll from 1965 - both adult and kid ones. Students don't really need to know the details about the doll, even though i suppose it could lead to a discussion about validity, generalisation, blah, blah, zzzzzz.
We are taking it seriously. It's an account of Bandura's (1965) study, based on the published journal article. It has been produced is as an educational aid-we use it during lessons to supplement teaching on social learning theory. As much as was possible, we have adhered to Bandura's original study - including using the same 'script' (socceroo is not a term we often use)! We haven't tried to recreate Bandura's videos, mearly to produce 'dramatised' versions to supplement the case notes.
Where can I find the complete video for the bobo doll experiment with all the variations including the group 3

It was 36 boys and 36 girls. Otherwise this is helpful with the basic outline of the study.

Oh man.... in some kind of way, this reminds me of the resocialization movie experiment mentioned in A Clockwork Orange. As you see here, it works.

Since the punishment ending was more hitting behavior, I'm surprised that the ones who viewed it were less aggressive.
