I absolutely adore steinway pianos, but it is a shame that I can'y afford one and I haven't got room for one. I got to play one at a concert, but I still love my Cramer piano.
I love the Yamaha's... At least people can afford them. The action is great, the sounds is great! It's all in personal preference. Many people would say the Steinway is junk and instead the Bosendorfer is much better. It's all personal taste. Don't take it too seriously.... This is a great video, though. Love it.
I've played a Bosendorfer and we have a steinway at home... I prefer the steinway. THe fake keys on the keyboard of the bosendorfer are just too damn annoying.

Haha yeah right. Steinway is so much better. I bet you never have played one. I can play one pretty much when ever I want since my school has like 30 of them. They are amazing pianos!
Thanks a lot Matt. I didn't have a MIDI version of the exact performance used in the animation, so I just played it through Pro Tools quickly and posted it for you. You can find a MIDI with bad sustain here:
mfrederickson . com/piano/In Passing.mid
The MP3 of the original is here: mfrederickson . com/piano/song1.mp3
Very nice!! The key depressions seem a bit a slow to me, but the modeling is superb. I did a similar project in 1996 (a MIDI-driven procedurally-animated piano) - search YouTube for "Butterflies in the Rain".
Thanks a lot! You're certainly not kidding about the processor demands for this rendering - I distributed this one over 20 Windows machines and it still took over 24 hours for 1100 frames.
About MIDI: I certainly considered that, and it would really only be a minor extension to add that functionality - in this case I hand specified which key would play at which time and let the physics sim handle the bounce. The rig is set up in such a way that with a simple C++ parser for MIDI I could add that ability in half a day.
awesome, I just sent you a message

You publish the Maya model of this piano?

Great to know you put all the effort in. I'm not trying to be pedantic but aren't those Sharps 'n' flats a bit thin on the keyboard (or vice versa)?
MisterMulluc 2 years ago
no, its fine
thenotoriousadin 2 years ago
Yes, actually they are a little bit to thin.
But great work, anyway!!

Newer music will never be as beautiful as the music of the romantic era.

Amen to that. However, suppose someone composes Romantic-style music? Ya never know.

Nice work! Rendering with HDR's is very PC intensive! Can't match the results with synthetic based lighting.
