  • Ma was star in the games she had competed with Nadia back 78' she was great on bars

  • man, her legs seems like they were so long but i believe her beam routine was also only out of 9.9 if i am not mistaken. one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES EVER

  • I think Davidova also did this dismount in 1980-the Korbut if I'm not mistaken.

  • Breathtaking. Sublime artistry. But that is the tradition in Chinese gymnastics. Thank you for sharing this!

I am ashamed as an American that Ma Yanghon did not medal on this event.

  • The Chinese were so raped at these Olympics. Ma should have won gold outright on bars and I would have placed her here as well-at the least a tie for bronze but if it were up to me-I'd give her gold for her gorgeous artistry and execution. Ahead of it's time.

  • I agree.

  • I thought Kathy Johnson's routine was awesome and deserved the bronze...

  • she always makes great dismounts

  • what dismount was that????

  • I would LOVE to see the dismount in slow motion.

  • I think it's a Korbut (google Olga Korbut's 1976 Olympic beam routine). A full twisting gainer back. I could be wrong though! :)

  • Korbut dismounted with a punch front full in the '76 games

  • I believe it was Nellie Kim who did this dismount.

  • Should have medaled with this!!!!

  • You are retarded. And I happen to be an American. It sounds like you are the one who needs to be taught a lesson, not anyone else. It is people like you who give the United States a bad name. Shame on you. You should think before you do something that just perpetuates a stereotype. It only reflects badly on you and your nation. Great job. What a patriot (not).

  • WTFever, talk about stereotype, the Euros and Russians on here who still cry about any medals the US has won in competitions over 20 years ago! I agree with USAGymnast, you all are sore losers and need to go shit out your sour grapes...get a life!

  • This routine scored a 9.70 in the finals! What were the judges thinking? A 9.70 undermines how well-rounded and poised this routine was and exposes the questionable judging that took place at these Olympics.

Mary Lou Retton got a 9.75 for a routine that didn't even include a tumbling series! Kathy Johnson performed solidly but was still overscored with a generous 9.85.

Simona Pauca's 9.90 and Ecaterina Szabo's 9.95 were adequate. Szabo's routine featured a back handspring to three layouts!

  • But that said, I wish there was a way to award the total artistry in that routine. To work so high on your toes and to use the arm movements (which can risk pulling you off balance) is at least as difficult as the various tumbling moves and should get more credit.

  • if waving their arms is risky for a gymnast, they shudnt be doing gymnastics

  • LOL, well I think they mean more like risk of falling and deductions not "breaking-your neck-and-getting-paralyzed" risk. =]

  • nah still

  • The dance along, the artistic presentation was the equal of Kathy Johnson-and superior to the elegant Szabo and Pauca. I don't dispute the medals-only that Ma also was not rewarded. Does anyone know her score here?? The old memory has faded far too much (yep I"m old enough to remember '84!lol).

  • She scored 9.7, carried 9.75 from prelims. So 19.45 was her total. She was 5th after MLR.

  • China was not a gymnastics power yet. Had Ma been from Romania or the States she and her teammates would not have been so undermarked throughout-especially on bars. Their work was truly visibly superior imo.

  • Ma's routine was less than a 10.00 SV per the event finals rules (which were more strict than the previous competition rules).

  • Beautiful arms!!!

  • hello loaugust! Is it for me? Did I said something wrong?

  • How uncultured you are with that comment. Please be civil with your choice of words.

  • What's wrong with you, try to be diplomatic ,please...in many ways they are right and we are not loosers..

  • Wow... interesting dismount!

  • She should have medalled. A victim of America's homeground advantage besides Szabo.

  • Didn't she deserve to medal? If I'm not mistaken the pro-American Los Angeles Olympics allowed for Kathy Johnson to get a "pity" medal when someone like Ma was left out of the medals and had to share the gold on UB with another American Julianne McNamara, who was hardly Ma's equal on the apparatus.

  • I much prefered Ma's bar routine over McNamara's, but McNamara's was good.

  • I think Kathy deserved a medal-and so did Ma. Both their beautiful presentation was better imo than Szabo and Potorac (mind you both of those girls were superb and also deserved to medal).

  • Pauca?

  • Woops! I meant Pauca! Potorac was not there in 1984. She showed up in 1988.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  • so beautiful!!
