I visited St Petersburg just before they celebrated their bicentennial. I found the people friendly and approachable even more so once I tried speaking Russian - which wasn't very good. Only place I know that has a market where you can buy fruit and veg or an ex-cosmanaut space suit. Eye opening place to visit. Especially the telephone bars. Not sure if they still have them.

Until I saw this, I didn't know Putin had brought back the Soviet anthem (with modified lyrics, of course). Good taste on his part, it's about as inspirational as any piece of patriotic music I've ever heard. Say what you will about the various people who've led Russia (and I wouldn't have much nice to say about any of them except Gorbachev and Yeltsin, both of whose best intentions ultimately failed), but you can't fault their composers.
