@splash548 You forget. It legal for cops to drive and use a cell phones , text each other and their family while in thier patrol cars, also use the many other wireless devices like thier laptops . And speed when off duty . Unlike us who the law is laid on us to carry the burden and have to pay for breaking the law with our time and bank accounts. They dont Own You Tube , and the 1st amendedment is still alive .
This is cool and I hope their efforts bear positive results. It's nice seeing a department think outside the box. How about posting some updates on how the program has worked out so far. Be safe.
I Think this is a great idea, It cost them maybe 15,000 for equipment and training, as compared to the cost of rotary wing, they can fly tandem with the right equipment (one to fly) and the other can operate camera equpment including FLIR, if they make several felony arrests from this it was worth the money, i'm talking to my chief about letting me use mine in NE Ohio.
Public use aircraft DO NOT need to operate under the CFAR's governed by the FAA for the most part.
As a high time professional pilot and long time CFII-CFII, MEI I question the aeronautical decision making process to use this type of aerial vehicle as the reliability of ultralight engines is nothing to brag about. WX conditions (light wind) can cause for a low dispatch rate. Nothing like a reliable fixed-wing or rotorcraft.
@carson0524 Because helicopters cost millions of dollars. Seriously. Check it out. These paraglider planes cost about what a used Honda does. They're also quite a bit quieter, and don't require pilot training. Oh, and they're far safer.
@MattGues Well this program only lasted for a little bit than they got rid of it because they said it was a waste of money, and apparently three of the officers that started the program did the gliding as a hobby over the weekends. My girl friends mom works at Palm Bay police station so that is how I know. They are a little beneficial, but when it comes to night searches and things I think the helicopter is better. And most crimes happen during the night.

Are you sure it's legal to fly over city limits?Check FAR part 91 I've been into ultralights for years and ultralights over city limits is a no no. 2 strokes are not reliable enough. I'm not trying to be a smart a** only bring up a question
The FAA is above the police departments authority.Just because these guys where a badge does'nt give them a right to fly where ever they want. I would like to see one these cops have an engine out over a very densly populated area and see them hanging from the power lines!
This does not seem like a good idea, don't you think that they might be shot at.

I can see the benefits but i also see a serious danger as targets for anyone with a gun on the run...the cops couldn't exactly take cover in a hurry.
