This can be bracketed at least in part with the memorable performance of Gunnar Johansen from years ago; Gunnar who recorded all of Busoni's piano music (also his Piano Concerto) was indeed qualified to perform the complete series: He also recorded complete series of Bach, Liszt and Freidman (also had time for an historical series of concerts).
A dir poco MERAVIGLIOSO...
Non che voglia giudicare una composizione del Busoni!Avrebbe dato una sonorità più e corposa e adatta alla conclusione d'un pezzo di questo carattere ;
@4candles Madge had his first piano lessons at the age of eight. After hearing Benno Moiseiwitsch, he decided to continue his piano studies with Clemens Leski in Adelaide. In 1963, after winning first prize in the ABC piano competition in Sydney, he went to Europe to study with Eduardo del Pueyo in Brussels and Geza Anda in Lucerne. He must be an autodidact to an extent...but he did have teachers. (:-D)

Amazing piece, it's only sad that it sounds as if Madge learned the piece 2 hours before recording.

Sounds a little like Liszt if he would've lived longer...

It really reminds Liszt's late pieces, and it just still again demonstrates how Liszt was ahead of his time.

Am I right in thinking Geoffrey-Douglas Madge was largely self-taught as a pianist?
4candles 1 year ago
@4candles No. He was taught by Géza Anda as well as some others.

@OrangeSodaKing Interesting. I thought I'd read somewhere that he was, but now I know better!

What a wonderful composition this is. Busoni is the culmination of all the great keyboard composers.

The prelude is indeed wonderful ! I agree that the rendition is a bit "spineless".
