@anryth well, currency (such as a dollar bill) is necessary for our economic system to function properly. Can you imagine if there was no currency? You could not simply go to the store and buy something with money, you would have to barter for it. If you didn't have anything the seller wanted you'd be SOL. Currency allows you to purchase commodities without bartering. Diamonds have no such economic function. Also paper currency does not involve cutting off the limbs of children in Africa.
