I get total cramp in my right hand when I play the part you're playing at 30secs in!! Though I have an electric piano that has horribly stiff keys!! How do your fingers not fall off?!?!?
@Shearo Nah, she messes up a lot - that doesn't mean it's bad, which is the whole reason I mentioned it in the first place (if you read the above comments).
I'm using your sheet music to learn this. The part with the interlocking dotted eights and regular eights is really difficult but I'm still trying! Thanks so much :)
I wish you would have included the beginning and end parts (the long, sustained chords)!!! The fast parts are difficult technically, sure, but it's the contrast with the slow (but beautiful) beginning and end that gives them context and makes them all the better.
That was really very cool. I have not seen anything similar to this that I have liked this much before on Youtube. Really, it was very gorgeous and I applaud you for your efforts.
haha, i was about to make a very simmilar comment. ive got the shirt in blue! Cheer for Sufjan! Cheer for Joanna! and three big Cheers for Doublewuzzy!
thank you so much for transcribing this, i'm not good enough to do it myself but been wanting to for a long time. your project is great, please keep it up.
printed off a load of your transcriptions the other day, i'd already toiled my way through book of right on a while back, learnt en gallop earlier from your sheet music and i had a play of this one but didn't go through it all.
her stuff is really enjoyable to play, thanks for writing it out!
nice work man im hoping to learn this as a fingerstyle guitar song it would a great help if you happen to have this as sheet music or even just basic chord outline that you could send to me it would be greatly appreciated
I don't think this song would translate to guitar very well, simply because the melody is very complex, and it would sound too simplified on guitar, even finger picked. It could work, but I have my doubts.
actually, by translating the sheet music exactly it works rather well on guitar (fingerpicking of course, chords would be much too simplified, you're quite right). When I say well I mean that it kills your fingers, but with enough practice should be perfectly doable. The only the trouble is that guitars do not go nearly deep enough for the chorus section, so compromises must be made :(
yeah, you were right i didn't read the key signature. that's why the transcription seemed odd. btw, i wasn't trying to belittle your work. this is an amazing effort on your behalf and much appreciated. i haven't been playing the piano that long either so i am definitly not trying to diss your playing :)
Not much, I stated in my channel info (at least it was in the past) that I only perform condensed versions on these clips because my camera cannot take more than 3 minutes of footage.
and here in "sawdust and diamonds" where she sings "and it cleft me right..." in the transcription there is and added bass note that i don't hear in the recorded version nor do you play it in this video. i.e. you play it correctly in the video but the notes you wrote are different in small points.
would you be interested to see what i transcribed for comparison and for the sake of swapping idea?
That bass note (a low G) is now in the transcription; you probably have an earlier version of it. If you notice, the top says "BETA version" on it, or at least it should. The bass note was not audible on the recording nor was I aware of it at the time I recorded this clip. I discovered it when watching a more recent performance of it.
Also, keep in mind that I have only been playing piano for four years; some of this clips have errors in them that are simply playing errors. For example, I mess up in Erin, Swansea, the end of this clip (and I think part of the middle, where I miss and hit some black keys), and I'm sure there are others. Also, in earlier works (like Book of Right-on) don't forget the key signature... that might be misleading to the ear if an unusual flat is left out (F-flat or C-flat, for example).
What you see here is the basic shape of the work -- no opening, and each verse (four broken F major chords and four broken G minor chords, forming one group which repeats four times for each verse of the song) is only done twice (i.e., I do the four F/four G pattern twice rather than four times). This is simply to demonstrate that I've transcribed it. The actual transcription contains the work in its entirety (minus the vocal part).
I've been trying to work this out on the harp, nice to know others are inspired too!! Sounds great as well.I got a bit stuck on all the chord changes when it opens out..You've obviously got a good ear and put a lot of work in. I like the whole harp- piano thing, I transcribed yann tiersen's piece vide onto the harp (originally on the piano), and 'the piano' by nyman..but perhaps that makes the title a bit silly ;D great stuff! (Oh and any tips-like the sheet music? - let me know eh? heh)..
thanks to you I now know that joanna newsom's music is amazing on piano as well. You play very beautifully and I wish I was as coordinated with playing separate parts with both hands as you are. And I like that shirt too if thats a sufjan shirt; I just saw him front row in michigan about a week ago.
Oh please, please share your music with me. Joanna Newsom is my harp hero and you are now my piano hero. I'll be awaiting the sheet music. Then I will play until the stars can hear me.
You transcribed this all by ear, that's amazing! I played the piano for three years, but never achieved anything close to the discipline and dexterity exhibited by your fingers. You're so modest and you have no reason to be, you should be proud of yourself-this was beautiful really. I admire the effort you put into this and it's obvious you must have a true appreciation and enjoyment for Joanna Newsom to undertake such an accomplishment. Do you play any other insruments?
Well, I've only played piano for four years but I've been playing other instruments since I was nine, so I have finger dexterity already (and apparently a lot of free time).
