It was good of him to do that, but in a way I find it sad that such a great piece of Japans history will sit in a library in some small town, kinda sad.
California was also hit. Santa Barbara was shelled by a sub. That said, all of the attacks on the US mainland by the Japanese were almost meaningless. I don't believe anyone died, and the structural damage was very little in the big scheme of things.
Tried to set the woods on fire in winter? Good luck. Forest service even spent a lot of money to put a monument there. Vandals got it as soon as it was placed. What if it had burned up the whole northwest? Then what? Not worth celebrating.
Not only that but trying to start a fire in the Pacific Northwest was a bad idea too. Southern California would've been better where there is lots of dry brush.
Flying Officer Nobuo Fujita is a remarkable man to research....
He also flew over the Australian capital cities Sydney and Melbourne (where I live) as well as the coast of Tasmania, he was launched from the IJN submarine I-25. "In daylight". Those flights are fascinating to read of.............
Personally I think the sword should have remained with his family, but with respect I honour this man.........
You'd be surprised how many people outside of Oregon doesn't know that. There are still a bunch of bombs out there that haven't been found yet too. We were also shelled on a few (one that i know of for sure) occasions by Japanese submarines sitting just off shore.
@salemcripple Yes and Arizona Four Corners Jap weather baloons dropped rats and mice with Hanta Virus and altered Bubonic Plague that kills people to this day.

Thanks for uploading this. I remember seeing this display in the Brookings Library, but I never went to that site out in the woods.
