@nickmotture you dummy, it's called sarcasm, that's why he got thumbs-up. if you still don't get it. he really means, "what are all these no-bodies doing acting in a great famous play". now you agree.
Shakespeare already rolled in his grave because of Romeo and Juliet. If he's rolling in his grave for this one, he might at least end up facing the right way.
I'm reading this book in my class now. really hard reading is kinda confusing. 7th grade and i don't understand the wording and i kind of wish they would make a kind reworked version making it easier :p
Shakespeare is not meant to be read. He would have hated to learn that you have to read it in class. All of Shakespeare's works are meant to be performed. I used to hate Shakespeare, even as a freshman Theatre major, but when I actually saw one put on stage it made so much more sense.
This back and forth about the appropriateness of a female Prospero seems to completely ignore the fact that there is a long standing theatrical tradition of adapting roles across gender. Female Hamlets, for example, have actually been relatively common -- and many of them performed very successfully. We may as well start dismissing Kurosawa's Ran on grounds of textual infidelity.
Frankly, protestations against the perceived PC-ness of the movie miss the point in way that is that is as underedu
VERY disappointed that Prospero is a woman now. This was my favorite Shakespearian play BECAUSE it had a strong father/daughter relationship in Prospero and Miranda. The mother/daughter relationship is very different from what Shakespeare's story really was. I don't care that it may be more appeasing to feminist critics-- oh well...
The movie was okay. My "modern" ear found the dialog over reaching and drawn out. Or, more to the point, boring. The costumes were so out of place, tank tops and zippers! Over all, this movie was a hodge podge of nonsense. Alice and Wonderland meets Matrix. Totally gay.
Omg, I studied this play extensively when I was twelve and completely fell in love with it. I've been getting a bit sick of the constant remakes and adaptations of the film industry the past few years with everything original being either rare or unpopular, but I think I'm actually really excited about this one. I hope Hollywood does a half-decent job of keeping to the original play a bit better than they did in Romeo and Juliet.
FOR ALL WHO ARE WONDERING: It seems people are only answering what the song at the END of the trailer is. However, the song that starts at 0:17 is 'Hell is Empty' off of the Tempest Soundtrack, and the one that starts when you see Russell Brand is 'High Day Two-Step', also off of the Tempest Soundtrack
I'd like watching this. But it would be kind of silly to watch it in german dub. I wonder if they make an exception and show this in english around here.
I think having a woman play Prospero will be interesting because a) Prospero's language is very gender neutral b) those dealing with magic tended to be female in this day c) the relationship between Miranda and Prospero is more matriarchal in the language. Go read the play and don't just fucking accept Sparknote interpretations as the only "right" interpretation.
……. My husband & I were just WONDERING when the directrix extraordinaire, Julie Taymor, was gonna come out with her newest gem … Thank you for posting this, heyuguysblog, thank you! ~ (•8-D
I am still not sure wtf this movie is about but because it's Julie Taymor's film with russell brand, alfred molina, helen mirren, and other great actors, I'll see it anyway.
does it say anywhere that helen mirren is in fact, acting as a female in this role? maybe she is acting like a man - because it is called 'acting' after all. it may be a tongue and cheek reference to when females weren't allowed on stage at all, & to have such a strong female actress carry this role, we should all be happy. and for those who have their panties in a twist about it HAVING to be a man, maybe you're missing a key point of Shakespeare's works - he was quite fond of gender bending!
@thatdaythemusicdied1 Julie Taymor switched it up a bit, and changed it from the sorcerer Prospero, to the sorceress Prospera. No gender bending, just bad directing and casting.
ok...I have to agree that Prospero should be a man...I have nothing against women and I know that there are adaptations all the time but I think that they should have stayed true to the play and shakespeare's vision...but this still looks amazing..Prospero is Miranda's father.not her mother...and besides men were mostly ceremonial magician's and alchemists back in those days..
I don't understand why it matters that Prospero is a female in this rendition of the play.
What people must understand is that there's a difference between stage performances, written works, and movies. Things are often changed in transition, as angry book fans watching a novel play out on a screen will happily tell you.
No doubt the producers thought that having Helen play the part would add something extra to the story that would have been absent had a male portrayed the role. And it's sim
