i thought Mike Smith from Suffocation pioneered the "Metal" blast beat, since the blast beat is originally a jazz concept, though it was utilized differently and played with different parts of the kit in jazz. I remember Mike Smith popping up with the "Metal" blast beat, but the theory of a European origin is plausible too...
@beatsrus01 that´s the cool thing by drums ! you can put everything anywhere you want :) If you play with the madest setup of the world, it doesn´t really matters when you can play on it ;)

grow up, stop whine, don't insult people with a different opinion. i recommend you to expand your horizon. watch some jeff hamilton and/or vinnie colaiuta vids and learn that jazz/fusion stuff demands the most versatility in drumming.
@sentient07 I meant Versatility in genres, Derek Roddy plays EVERYTHING! not saying that he CAN play everything, he PLAYS everything. Jazz, death metal, fusion, blues, you name it. And don't come here and say that i need to expand my horizon, i listen to/enjoy every kind of good drumming. Dave Weckl, Jojo Mayer and Dennis Chambers actually belong in the list of MY favorite drummers.

@MrObsidian To me, the more "acoustic" the output is, the more i like. Its horrible when all the beats loose their accents and all turn out sounding equal. Thats the why i like this DVD. Cheers.
@MrObsidian With trigger it's cheating, without it, it sounds inconsistent. Where is it gonna end? "You can't please everyone 100% of the time" indeed.

@JackMehoff845 yes, mrobsidian is derek roddys actual youtube account. he has been around for a while now b ecause hes an awesome guy who loves to give his insights on drumming and music...
@viliauvinen19 inaccuracy?! what the fuck are you deff?! he is derek ONE TAKE roddy! he barely commits mistakes but if he did they will record it again bitch! its a DVD for christ sake!
@jred214 well, those are not really 'mistakes', just very tiny little flams on the beginnings of double bass bursts.. and don't take me wrong, I've been watching his videos for years and learned many good things from him..
@viliauvinen19 those arent even little flams dude, the reason why his double base sounds different this time is because he is not using TRIGGERS anymore, thats what he said in his clinic. just for you to know
even if he did play it 100% perfectly, there's no reason for you to react like then. besides, there are times in this video where roddy doesn't play litterally "perfect", so don't be so offensive and spew this epithet stuff, even proffesionals like derrek roddy arn't perfect.
i deserved it so don't worry. lol. i was just hating. i know he's a nice guy. so is eric rutan. i take back everything i said about him. not that i ever had anything personally against him. i'm just not a fan of his new group. that doesn't mean he's not a great musician (which he is) or a nice guy.
I don't really dig the kind of music Roddy plays most of the time, but I totally respect his ethos. If the DVD does all the things he says, then this is the kind of material that needs to be shipped to the drumming community more often.
you know what? you're absolutely right. i take it back completely. sorry derek. i guess i was just really sad about the fact that i preferred his work with H.E. and i wish he would have stayed with them. but you are still right when you put it that way. he is helping alot of people and he's STILL badass. so sorry.
let's face it he's a really great drummer but i think his head got too big and he walked out on the one of the best original sounding deathmetal bands of ALL TIME just to whore his name out and teach his technique to a bunch of young aspiring musicians that will probably end up puting it to better use than he is at this point in his career. what a sellout.
MoltovSamson: WHAT? You call THAT a sellout? When someone walks out of the front death metal scene and teaches young kids - THAT'S what you call a "sellout"???
Dude, most of the teaching he does on internet is for free. He actually is probably the only drummer spending so much time on internet and helping young drummers all around the world FOR FREE!
Everything about D-Rod is SOOOO not sellout! He should be an inspiration to all.
@ moltovsamson wow how wrong you are. i saw AND TALKED TO derek roddy personally at the modern drummer festival last year and he was nothing but completely humble about his skills and his music. he was joking around with the other drummers most of whom he is good friends with, and was happy to talk to everyone and share his knowledge and was looking to inspire the younger kids in the audience. i wish that most others in the music business were as nice and helpful as derek was...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i think it's a real shame that he decided to take this route instead of sticking with what he had with his original band. first of all he's not as "extreme" as he used to be. not by half. the intensity id GONE. secondly what's the use of blasting to music that isn't even that brutal?
Derek left hate Eternal because t every other member of the band expected him to put his life on hold for the band, and the band couldn't support him. Even highly successful metal bands don't make enough money to live off of.
Along with the standard, "It takes not talent to play a blast beat." Spoken by those who have failed to play blast beats or have no talent to speak of anyway.
