That's dillusional thinking. I can jump out of a plane without a parachute and yell, "open parachute." The parachute won't open if there ain't one strapped. Back to the drawing board.

Fun story Mike. It's so valuable to work as a team. I've found that there is a limit to how much any one leader can do, at some point they need other people's help and that's much easier to accomplish if they have a great team.
If being part of a team and loosing your individuality makes you try harder, then Communism would work better as a productive force than any other system. In fact the opposite is actually true in human nature. The greatest of human achievements and brilliance have been individual and not group efforts.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. If the donkey thinks he's working in a team he has less relative responsibility for the outcome. If there's 5 donkeys each donkey only has 20% part of the work. The donkey might therefor think that he can slack while the other 4 donkeys do the work for him. If there's only 1 donkey he has 100% responsibility for the outcome and will have more incentive to excel at his work.
Let me tell you something. Imagine yourself instead of Jasper the one that's pulling the car out. You would probably would not even try to pull the car out. You would think you definitely wont have the strength to do it. Now, If you think there is someone else with you, there is a big chance you would try. That effort will be a very big one, because you think everybody else is doing it. But then we all know its only you. See? Common sense.
It's still wrong. The comment space is too small for me to give specific references but I recommend you search for "social loafing" or "diffusion of responsibility" on wikipedia or google. There is plenty of research on this subject in the field of psychology and "game theory" and empirical evidence supports my point of view. For example see "Ringelmann rope experiment". An actual group pulls more but each extra group member causes a decline in individual effort. It's proved!
You are mistaking. Diffusion of responsibility merely happens in scenarios of this nature. It does not happen often in groups this small. And social loafing happens when an individual "slacks off" because he thinks his work and effort will not be considered. This was definitely not the case here.
It does happen in groups of all sizes. Who says it only happens in big groups? pinguin6569? Allow me to doubt until you provide some reliable references in the way I did.
You just said it is common sense and explained how you intuitively though about it. You did not provide any empirical evidence. Diffusion of responsibility happens often, as proved by the Ringelmann rope experiment and a bunch of other studies. This is some "common sense" from my personal experiences: In basketball it is a lot more demanding playing 2 on 2 than it is playing 5 on 5 and even more demanding playing 1 on 1 because the fewer players the more effort is required from you as an indi...

I never said that it "does not happen". I said it is not often. And an explanation of this phenomena is already posted on my past comment.
