Its so funny how people are like, The Beatles are some of the best performers ever! But, the majority of their live performances absolutely sucked!!
I guess America will never know the meaning of a true performer. Instead they will criticize their every mistake and beat them down instead of lifting them up...What a country we live in.
im having trouble understanding the part at about 4:30. he said that pop music stuck to the old notes like a vengeance. then he said pop was drifting farther apart from classic. can anyone explain?
OK, I'm not even a minute in, and I'm already a little annoyed. One of the styles the Beatles "revered" was Motown, which was (and still would be by today's standards) the pop-music antithesis of "primitive sound"! Raw, sure, sometimes, but never really primitive. (The BEATLES' early sound was raw and primitive!) I'm going to keep watching, obviously, b/c I do love the Beatles, but good grief, how do you get something that important THAT wrong w/i 20 seconds?? o.0
Oh, I didn't know the beatles got popular by being bad then becoming artists. Usually when bands do that, they stop being popular.
This was interesting (if only for how horribly he confuses kraut-rock with classical, and if you disagree then what is 'classical' and what does it mean, really)
The Beatles would have never made it without George Martin. George Martin created them and he pretty much molded them to success even though their melodic ambitions were very plain and poppy.
@HollowKorean Should that be true, George Martin would have succeeded with other acts he produced in the same scale he did with The Beatles which he didn´t. Although Martin was very important in their carreers, Beatles were meant to be what they were and they only needed the right support (which Martin and EMI provided). Probably Brian Epstain was the one who really transformed them.
the beatles were good but not a patch on the gifted child genius justin beiber...... lol ps i love goodall. he really has matered his area of knowledge and expertise. fascinating analysis of music.
Thankyou for this upload, I was deeply annoyed at myself for not having recorded it when I watched it on TV. This is the best documentary I have yet seen on the Beatles music.

Goodall is fantastic really informative and unpretentious. I wonder if the Beatles themselves were aware of the observations he makes.

Best documentary ever on the Beatles.
If anyone has Howard Goodall's appearance on Desert Island discs on tape I would be eternally grateful if you could post it on YOUTUBE.
Thanks.

One of the greatest documentaries about The Beatles. I'm showing it to my college English class as an example of the way to analyze works of art.
