I don't believe in hero worship, so I would like to thank Michael for all of his inspired music over the many years I've been a listener. I would reserve grief and emotional attachment to his friends and family, because I did not know him personally. To all of you my heart goes out.
Great video! And frankly, I had always in my mind looked at this as common ground between both Michael who I did not know well, and Randy who is a friend, and who's solo here is amazing. The common ground of brotherhood was and still is inspiring. We all miss you Michael!
what a music language! what a sound! what a sensibility and passion! what a genius! just one and only in pantheon of music gods - Michael Brecker! RIP maestro!
I was fortunate enough to see Michael Brecker perform in Atlanta on a couple of occasions. I actually was able to sit in on one of his clinics at Emory University. What an artist! He will always be my hero.
So good to see that someone took the time to do this. Thank you, Ben. I was a friend of Michael and was involved in trying to find a donor. It is still so hard for me to hear him play without sadness sweeping over me. He was just too young. Beautiful video.
Michael left a huge legacy for all jazzmusicians. This tune is full of tension, emotion, beauty... by the way, does anyone have a lead sheet of this ? R.I.P
indeed, there is a version of this composition, one of his best, on Stern's 1991 album "Odds or Evens", a worthwile cd, which, by the way, features Bob Berg on tenor sax.
When I was young tenor player, I picked a copy of Now You See It Now You Don't out of the CD Bin.
I listened to it all night.
Like many here, I am one of Mike's musical children, stumbling like a baby over licks he pulled off effortlessly.
He's gone now and I'll never be able to see him play again ( I made it a point to seek out his shows), But I each time pick up my horn, count off "Never Alone" , I carry the message and honor the man and his music.
I always made sure i went to see Michael when he made, all too much breif, appearances in the UK. I have seen him with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, His Brother in London but i will always remember his appearence at the Birmingham Symphony Hall when his Sax fell apart and he asked anyone in the audience if they had an elastic band. one was provided and he played on in his usual splintering style.
I really want to thank you for all your great and loving comment. Im sure Michael would appreciate all of this.
Its nou just over 2 years ago he passed away. I still an remember how I felt. One of my saxophone teachers called me in the middle of the night. He was in New York the time he was in the hospital and passed away. Than he told me he passed away, I couldnt believe is. The day after I made this tribute to one of my greatest heroes.
So gutted he has gone, can't help feeling he had much more to say on the instrument. What an influence he was on me and so many other players. He will always be missed. R.I.P Sir.

I've come back to this song at times of death, happiness, sadness, love... its evokes so much with such a quiet song. Randy and Mike narrate everything with their fingers and lungs, in a way that few others ever could or ever will be.
at 5:33, it's a little...special. But it's the true sound of michael's sax, not a perfect flat studio sound for idiot teenager. And at 6:00, in your face, where it comes from ? the tenor sax is not suppose to have more thant 3 octave range !! this is michael brecker, the best.

Once again -- this is Mike Stern's tune "Common Ground" recorded live from Barcelona, Spain in 1992 -- I have it an VHS, but I doubt it's available on DVD. Just a guess. Dennis Chambers on drums. GREAT concert. AGAIN: BRECKER BROTHERS LIVE FROM BARCELONA, SPAIN, circa 1992!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Ben for posting that, that song is incredible I have the live in spain version of it which I saw a few clips of it. I am blessed I have been able to play with Randy, his brother will live on forever in the world of jazz
I am also looking for a copy of this performance. I believe it was made only in vhs format and is since out of print. I did find a Brecker Brothers live in new york cd with the same lineup and some of the tunes that are posted on youtube. I don't have the details with me, I'll post them another time. The performance is excellent on the cd, it's sounds like they were still feeling each other out, compared to the barcelona performance which is just insane.
I saw directions in music with brecker, hargrove and hancock in Eugene and I have to tell you meeting him in person was the one of the many joys I've had in my musical career. Another great tenor player I talked with before he passed on was Joe Henderson at the Stanford Jazz workshop. It was a much sadder life he led what with all the drugs and emotional problems, but they were both geniuses in their own right. I just hope both found peace that they gave us through their music.
Believe it or not, folks, but there are still some people out there who do not have an ear for and an appreciation of modern jazz. We should weep for them. But, more constructively, we should encourage them to watch/listen to this wonderful tribute to Mike. Christ, but he played so well. He is always so inspirational to me. I couldn't play as well as Mike in a million years of practice. He just had 'it'. Rest easy old mate.
I first heard Michael I think as a sophmore in high school in 1983. Heavy Metal Bebop. Man ... he blew me away. Every time he came by my area, I kept saying I'd go hear him play next time. I never did. Man ...
wow, this just hit me like a ton of bricks. i used to listen to the brecker brothers when i was a teen in the 70s and when they used to jam with the horny horns with fred wesley and maceo parker with parliment. i didnt know he passed away. thats sad.
"Common Ground" was composed by guitarist Mike Stern. This track is featured on the C.D. "Brecker Brothers Live 1992" recorded on the Jazz Door label - and features Mike Stern as well as Mike Brecker on this wonderfully cerebral music. Just love it !
Yeah, Michael at his soulful best. As always, the whole piece lifts when he enters. His voice inspires me as much today as when I first heard him 30 years ago with the funk band Dreams, after I started playing sax in high school. Even though I never met him, Michael's been a guiding light throughout my lifetime of music, as I'm sure he has been for thousands of other musicians. There will never be another one like him. Thanks, Ben, for this beautiful tribute.
Michael played on 900 albums. He had that something that exceeds the technical, something that makes us more aware that we are more than what we seem. He showed us the light. I will miss you, may you rest in a pure land where your soul can rest...........thank you
This guy was realy close to my heart, i remember me him and my dad going fishing, we had a real good bond ill miss the times we had together, i miss the talks we had. even now i go down to his grave to piss on his stone and out crisp packets in his rotted asshole, i loved the smell the friction his asshole and my cock gave, ill be sure to visit his body again when im out of jail
I agree with you, roberto. It is impossible for life to be an accident. What came first, the sound or the ear? God knows...Really, He does. R.I.P. Mr. Brecker.
I'm trying to think of the words that come to my mind when I hear this music; neutered, white washed, sterile, clinical, half assed, and in conclusion, processed.(you know like Velveeta cheese)
I don't think, sidewalk diserves harsh response. Art effects people in different ways. There is a lot of technicality in Jazz that is really supposed to go easy on the average listiner. And for Sidewalk to comment that it is "sterile" or whatever, one only have to consider the source. Brecker was nothing short of a Phenom. Maybe, Sidewalk would investigate Mr. Brecker if he was not shot down for his critique, which he is allowed to have.
I totally agree. Some people don't realize -- and never will -- just how amazing this man's music was. I have never liked "The Who" nor "The Rolling Stones" very much. But it doesn't mean that their music wasn't/isn't great. "Beauty is in the mind..."
well apprently this tune is on 'Brecker Brothers Live 1992'. i have only just found this out myslef, so i need a copy too, becasue no i dont have it! i hope theres a recorded version of the doing it at the North Sea Jazz festival aswell, but i wouldnt get my hopes up. But yeh, 'Brecker Brothers live '92' is the way to go. x
Kathy, you can't get a copy of this. I bought the VCR version of this performance (Barcelona, Spain) at least 10 years ago. To my knowledge, it is not on DVD nor on a CD. The closest you could come to it would be to buy the "Return of the Brecker Brothers" CD. But it does not have this tune on it. Nor does it capture the live "electicity" that was so obviously present that night...
My saxophone istructor once told me that Michael Brecker, after achieving much critical and popular acclaim, was asked by a journalist "How does it feel to be the greatest tenor saxophonist alive today?" Brecker quickly responded, "why dont you ask Jerry Bergonzi?"
RIP Michael. You have inspired a generation of players, including myself, to continually strive to become greater saxophonists. Most influential tenor player since Coltrane
Ben Rodenberg (of that great city of Rotterdam)kindly reminded me that the track in Mike's tribute is "Common Ground" by Mike Stern. This marvellously 'celebral'track is featured in the C.D. "Brecker Brothers Live 1992", on the Jazz Door label. Also featured in this fabulous recording date is Mike Stern himself playing terrific guitar.
Last night (Thursday) the great British modern jazz tenor saxophonist Mornington Lockett led a tribute to Mike Brecker at the Spin Jazz Club in Oxford, England.
He's so great, RIP Michael. HEY EVERYONE, I just found this piano player who is completely amazing. Search for "Long vent: Improv on Piano." My jaw dropped.
Thanks for this wonderful video. I can see the similarity to Jow Zawinul's work. It sounds very Miles-ish to me, too. I'd love to know the source of this Brecker solo. Let's also pay tribute to the great work Michael performed with Joni Mitchell's great bands.
Farewell for now, Big Mike. You're always tucked away waiting 'in the wings' of our jazz memories. We'll meet again.
Thank You Great Master...Not only for the divine contribution to our many lives through your art but, even before that, for the great person you are, my friend!
Beautiful and thanks for this tribute to a towering genius of the saxaphone. I first heard Pools from Steps Ahead when i was a teen. It changed my life. RIP Michael, your music will live for ever.

Thanks Michael.I hope he got saved before he died. God had given him great talent. RIP.

Man ...

Hi, nycaholic,
See my written comment of a few minutes ago for details of this track and C.D.
Best of British luck to you, fellow jazzer.

Michael played on 900 albums. He had that something that exceeds the technical, something that makes us more aware that we are more than what we seem. He showed us the light. I will miss you, may you rest in a pure land where your soul can rest...........thank you

Never been a jazz fan, though I've never had a problem with it. More of a metal man myself and even I can tell this is phenomenal.

I'm trying to think of the words that come to my mind when I hear this music; neutered, white washed, sterile, clinical, half assed, and in conclusion, processed.(you know like Velveeta cheese)
SidewalkFrequencies 4 years ago
Do you play better?
jazzkenpo 4 years ago
I don't think, sidewalk diserves harsh response. Art effects people in different ways. There is a lot of technicality in Jazz that is really supposed to go easy on the average listiner. And for Sidewalk to comment that it is "sterile" or whatever, one only have to consider the source. Brecker was nothing short of a Phenom. Maybe, Sidewalk would investigate Mr. Brecker if he was not shot down for his critique, which he is allowed to have.
Got2Liv 4 years ago
I totally agree. Some people don't realize -- and never will -- just how amazing this man's music was. I have never liked "The Who" nor "The Rolling Stones" very much. But it doesn't mean that their music wasn't/isn't great. "Beauty is in the mind..."

well apprently this tune is on 'Brecker Brothers Live 1992'. i have only just found this out myslef, so i need a copy too, becasue no i dont have it! i hope theres a recorded version of the doing it at the North Sea Jazz festival aswell, but i wouldnt get my hopes up. But yeh, 'Brecker Brothers live '92' is the way to go. x
SAXtotheMAX 4 years ago 3
