I have a curious question for Raider Nation out in YouTube land who are old enough to remember Raiders from the 1970's to 1980's. Dave Casper vs Todd Christensen : who's #1 and who's #2? BTW, I think it was really crappy of Al Davis trading Casper to the Houston Oilers for Dan Pastorini.
get in Christensen should. Was he the blocker that Casper and Chester were? No, but that was not what he was asked to do. And what he did he did spectacularly.
out of his ability than the fiercely determined Mormon kid.. Howie Long said that Todd just wouldn't be denied. In 1983, he was messing with Long and the fearsome Lyle Alzado. "Yes, he's messing with us but he sure can catch the rock," Alzado said. He sure could catch the rock. Indeed! And fight his way past linebackers and assorted traffic. As Long said - Christensen's determination was legendary. There should be a bust in Canton, Ohio for him. Before the likes of Sharpe and Tony Gonzalez....
have Christensen's great hands or raw boned reliability. Christensen had a great year in 1982 - his first year as a starter. He was better than Kellen Winslow and Ozzie Newsome in 1983. In 1984, Winslow was having a monster year until shredding his knee ligaments against the Raiders midway into the season. Todd became the game's best tight end all by his lonesome until the emergence of Mark Bavaro in 1986. Bavaro was a complete tight end who was also a great blocker. But NO ONE got more out of..
He was the precursor to the premier pass catchers like Tony G and Witten. Keep in mind that he came into the NFL as a free agent and not even as a tight end. After being cut by the Giants and Cowboys Todd found a home in Oakland. He excelled on special teams and was swiched to tight end from fullback. The Raiders already had the game's best in Dave Casper and the probably the second best that year in Raymond Chester. And a promising young stud named Derrick Ramsey. But Ramsey did not..continued.
I LOVE this video! I grew up in the bay area and I'm a huge Raiders fan. I played tight end in high school and when I played semi-pro football in AZ. I always wore #46 because Todd Christensen was my idol.
Its sad that most people don't know Todd Christensen... he only RULED the TE position in the NFL from 83-86. Gimme a minute, let me look up some stats... REC YDS TDS
1983 92 1247 12
1984 80 1007 7
1985 82 987 6
1986 95 1153 8
Most TEs (and WRs) dream of having years like that... Todd did it four years running. Man was a BEAST.
But most people who watch the NFL... don't know him.
Todd Christensen knew every trick on how to get open. Some of those tricks were even within the rules. He was not a very flexible athlete. He was no Dave Casper, he never would have caught the ball on the ghost to the post play in 1977 for instance. Christensen was not gifted at blocking. But he had exceptional hands, was very durable, and somehow he was able to be a very good runner after the catch. He was a smart, hard runner after the catch with superb hands and gritty concentration.
@plntntvzn Todd Christensen was a beast i played him in a charity basketball event for my pop warner football team. The Raiders were there it was awesome they beat us coaches handily it was a fun event....

@gerLd no question he broke a lot of records and helped make the pass catching tight ends to gain more attention from defenses.

Todd made some of the best catches I've ever seen. Did a full flip after one of them. Good for a big guy.
