There is no way that this can be done better. The most beautiful piece of music ever recorded (1957): If you are happy it makes you happier, if you feel sad it gives you hope, if you feel down it gives you the feeling of the mightiness of the world. Just my number one favorite!
Interesting the comments (just about all highly favourable) but the range includes, soothing, uplifting, beautiful etc - and I'm not going to disagree but apart from beautiful my overriding feeling is always sadness - is it just me?
The Pearl Fishers Duet is my very favorite music piece. It's the most beautiful operatic male duet ever written. No other rendition comes close to it. This is the music that I'd want to hear last before I die. I've owned the CD for many years, but am thankful that it was uploaded to share with others.

I agree that Pavarotti is not the best but has a haunting quality to his voice, but as a musician i have played this song many times and found listening to Jussi's interpretation to be more helpful with breathing and phrasing a wonderful and romantic song.
Heard this for the first time today on WFMT in Chicago while driving...I had not heard Jussi Björling before. I was overcome. Thanks to WFMT and YouTube for my introduction to this extraordinary talent.
anybody see the scene in the film galipolli when he gets told they have to go over the top in the morning? he has a glass of champagne and toastes his wife while listening to this song.one of the most moving scenes i have ever seen in a film :)
I am so sorry. My father and I also used listen to this together and I take comfort from the fact that we had a last night together listening to Jussi before he had a sudden heart attack that night
One can always debate about who did this or that recording best. Who sings the very best, etc.
However, I think many people agree that there is no better recording of the Pearl Fishers duet than this created by Robert Merrill and Jussi Björling.
My father introduced me to this about 50 years ago and it still brings me to tears. I have listened to others recently but this still has such a sweetness about it.
@NRob84 Very interesting that you say that you try to play the violin the way Jussi Bjorling sings. I have always said that the viola is the second most beautiful instrument; that the most beautiful is the human voice -- and that I have always tried to play the viola the way Jussi Bjorling sings. I'm glad to hear that another musician has the same sentiments. Listen too to the recording of Marian Anderson singing the Brahms songs with William Primrose and Franz Rupp.

I've heard versions and versions (Domingo/Milnes...Kraus/McDaniels...Pavarotti/Dimitri Hvorostovsky, etc.) and none is above, not even equal to Boerling/Merrill's Pearl Fishers duet. None. This is heaven, sublime, this is by far the best I have heard. If there is a better one, or equal to this one, please let me know.
As a law student I used to go home each weekend to visit my mother as she struggled against cancer. Sunday afternoons were spent listening to music in her bedroom. This was the last piece we listened to together before she died and after 30 years it still moves me and helps me recall her love of life and gentle beauty as if she was listening still.A wonderful recording.Thanks.
So beautiful. This one version of this song convinced me to enrol in a voice program at university 35 years ago. I love it to this day. The beautiful blending of the voices makes me weep!

Don't underestimate Robert Merrill's performance - powerful, smooth, incredible resonance.
These two created a bit magic together. Definitive version! the vocal harmonies seem like they were written for these great singers. Shame Bizet never got to hear it.
@TheJBrel So true. Merrill is a fantastic baritone, always singing in great style and with taste, never ruining anything with 'sobs'. Bjoerling himself had the utmost regard for his singing, and immediately recognised his talent when hearing him for the first time. One of the finest singers ever.
Bjorling is offen compared to Caruso and I enjoy both tenors but this song and Salut demeure are proof that no one man can compare to this god of voice.
I've loved this duet ever since I first heard it in 1956. It was years before I read the story of the opera. They are two pearl fishermen who are sweraing eternal love to each other. And, then they find a mermaid ............ and their friendship is not so eternal. But, that's opera for you.
@johnnylinehan They're not swearing eternal love, they're swearing to always be friends. And yes, they find a mermaid who they both love and argue about her (though the argument is left out of many recordings - the recording with Bryn Terfel and Roberto Alagna is the only one I know of) but they make up at the end of it and swear not to argue over women again (a wise decision!)
Just recently got into u-tube. I picked up on this piece thru' Qantas classics, Bocelli/Terfel. Tell you what though, these guys are something else, bloody fantastic recording.
302MarkVII "I'm on a quest to make sure that this new generation of opera lovers not forget who Björling was."
Congratulations! Mission accomplished! I'm 24 and I'm falling (head-over-heels) in love with JB's marvelous singing. Having discovered him, I couldn't bring myself to listen to any other modern day tenor for a while. I also loved Mr. Merrill's interpretation as Zurga. Thanks for uploading this gem.
@RoyKa2010 If you listen to the *O soave fanciulla* with Bjoerling/Tebaldi and then change to the same with Villazon/Netrebko, two of the absolute darlings of today, you may hear the difference. An almost spooky experience, and sad too in a way...
@RoyKa2010 I feelk similarly. After reading David Jones' (reknowned vocal pedagogue) rapturous praise of his technique, listening to his singing confirms the praise. Always elegant, always right on the note, with chiaroscura throughout the voice :-)
@RoyKa2010 when i was 18 i chased mr bjoerling down a snowy sidewalk in cleveland and he and i walked back into the bldg where he gave me not one but TWO of his autographs. at 6 feet 2 inches i towered over mr bjoerling but compared to his genius at singing i was a mere pigmy. 2 years later he was dead of a heart attack at 49. what a tragedy. for me, he will always be the greatest tenor of all time.
a recent poll listed him as the greatest singer of the 20th century. enjoy!!
@davecotuit Thanks for sharing this sweet anecdote with us. It's is always encouraging to know that your favorite artist had a personality as great and as sincere as his art. That level of down-to-earthness must be quite a rarity among opera singers! Almost as rare as that silvery voice.
Ive been checking out other recordings of this duet and checking the comments with interest.I have always respected everybody to there own opinion. O.K,heres my opinion: It doesnt get any better then this.Period!!!
such a shame that our young people are swamped with rubbsh like rap, when there is such beautiful and evocative music like this to listen to . Bjorling and Merrill sing like angels. It always makes me cry .
I have always considered this the definitive unmatchable version. Bjorling's voice is just outstanding in this duet. I don't know if anyone heard him singing the Otello duet with Merril, that was also outstanding.
My father Jack Thomas who was himself a 2nd tenor in the Rhos Male Voice choir and who recently passed away, had a taped copy of this song and played it to his dying days. This song will always remind me of you dad. xx
Both Bjoerling and Merril were accused of being 'cold', as many preferred the more emotional 'sob-singing' in those days. Lucky us, who hear this wonderful piece sung with such extreme clarity and taste, letting us listeners discover the hidden feelings in the true beauty of their stupendous voices. Without being irritated by mannerisms. We are listening to 2 greatgreat artists. And they were great friends too. Perhaps that's part of why this is so moving...
Im sitting here with my partner Gill, she just wanted to here her fav piece of all time, The Pearl fishers. We are in tears as we listen, so moving and resplendent. What words can express such a divine feeling? there are none. But you wonderful people out there will understand how we feel. So after reading all the comments here about this piece i can say that if we, all of us, would transfer its emotions to our lives in everyway, oh! what a world we would have. Love on you softees, love on!
@lmsundin Hi, Imsundin. I presume you are asking for a translation of the Pearl Fishers, or do you mean you want a translation of my own comment? If you want a translation of the song i can get you one in French, just let me know. Regards paul.
@onlylexus If you could provide the French words, I might be able to translate to English. If you have both would be even better. Thank you. P.S. The Ten Tenors have a real nice version of this on their Here's to the Heroes DVD. Adrian Phillips and Craig Atkinson do great. Give it a try.

@onlylexus what an incredible thing of beauty this is - felt exactly the same - never heard of it - someone recommended it with the link and I was completely unprepared for the wave of emotion which swept over me - it moved me to tears and I don't understand a word of it - shows that human emotion is universal and that we are all connected by threads that run much deeper than our own trivial individuality. A gift to humanity no less.
There are a number of youtube versions that provide English translation, as well wikipedia. In brief, the duet is about a beautiful woman that comes between the two friends, and the friends finally vowing to remain friends forever through thick and thin.
En sådan röst som jussi Björling hade är så fantastiskt, det finns bara en med en sådan röst,o sjunga duett med Robert är underbar.Jag spelar den minst en gång per dag o aldrig less jag bara ryser.Tack
fan-tas-tic!!! Björling-Merrill both perfect in their respective tessitura.Cristal-clear voices, so clean, outstanding, have no words... Thanks very much for posting the best version of this duet I ever heard!!!
This is the ultimate version of this song. There are no one that can be comparede to this two one on this song. Tears are coming when I hear this song adn my soul find peace.
The most beautiful combination of voices of great beauty and passion. It revives faith in the human race and its capacity for beauty. It is achingly beautiful every note, every intonation.Thank god for you tube for offering such exquisite music for all.
I too am a "ruffy-tuffy biker" dude, but opera brings me to tears. This is one of my favorite songs. Used to come home when I was grade school (late 50s) and mom would be home (always, in those days) doing housework with her Caruso records playing. Over time, I developed a love for opera.
I first listened to this duet with my mother when i was small girl... it had a tremendous effect on me back then, so much so that i never forgot it.... fantastic!
Yes. One has to cherrypick as I do. There are a lot of beautiful songs in Operas. Some Operas have the ability to move me. I like a lot of Wagner's music but I would kill myself if I had to sit through another one of his "masterpieces". Yikes. When I was 18, I cried at I Pagliacci's Vesti La Giuba and again at La Boheme's La tua mana e gelata.
@JCSandes, Wunderlich did not record this duet. I was comparing voices only. I know when we compare, we judge, we make criticism, and this is not fair to tenors. How can I forget Gedda, Pavarotti, Caruso (I never had a good record of Caruso, he may be the greatest, who knows?), Beniamino Gigli, Corelli and so many others? In certain arias no one beats Pavarotti, in others Wunderlich is superb in Wagner ( my respects to Lauritz Melchior here) and so on...
I agree wholeheartedly. They are all wonderful and individual, which is what makes music great. We all have a viewpoint and cannot really be said to be wrong. Just enjoy the variety of beauty being offered. And a question -- Wunderlich sang Wagner?!?! Isn't that rep. too big for him? I must listen to him again. (love his voice, along with Bjorling, Pavarotti, Kraus, Florez)
Wunderlich's early death was a huge loss, but I cannot say his voice competes with Bjorling. I don't think they would have sung the same rep., anyhow. Both wonderful singers, but I still think Kraus has it over both of them on this duet.
This might be the best male duet of any opera—simply amazing. Björling is one of the greatest singers of all time; Merrill does not disappoint either. I saw a performance of the Pearl Fishers from the San Diego Opera a couple years ago; this scene is just as powerful today as when I first experienced it live.
Thank you. I can't believe I've found this. One of favourite recordings of all time. There is only one other and that is more a wish that a fave - to see Placido Domingo sing 'Your Tiny hand is frozen'. Sadly that won't happen, but I'm so glad you did this. Many thanks.
Paris 1 100hotmail, I too would wish this to be played at my funeral. There won't be a dry eye in the place. It's truly a wonderful piece of music to go out on. Love and peace to you.

RoyKa2010 1 year ago 2
@RoyKa2010 If you listen to the *O soave fanciulla* with Bjoerling/Tebaldi and then change to the same with Villazon/Netrebko, two of the absolute darlings of today, you may hear the difference. An almost spooky experience, and sad too in a way...
zgopify 1 year ago

Almost as rare as that silvery voice.

such a shame that our young people are swamped with rubbsh like rap, when there is such beautiful and evocative music like this to listen to .

This song will always remind me of you dad. xx
joninwakey 1 year ago 2

PS A translation? Yes please

@6aachristina This music is a rare thing of beauty.
There are a number of youtube versions that provide English translation, as well wikipedia. In brief, the duet is about a beautiful woman that comes between the two friends, and the friends finally vowing to remain friends forever through thick and thin.

I too am a "ruffy-tuffy biker" dude, but opera brings me to tears. This is one of my favorite songs. Used to come home when I was grade school (late 50s) and mom would be home (always, in those days) doing housework with her Caruso records playing. Over time, I developed a love for opera.

annieykc11 2 years ago

It won't let me put a thumbs up (yet?) but I wholeheartedly agree!

I would put Fritz Wunderlich very close to Bjorling. Who would know what Wunderlich would become if he had not died so young (35 years)?
gauss2005 2 years ago
@gauss2005 I was not aware Wunderlich had recorded this duet. Have you got any info abt it? I share your admiration for this two great tenors.
Regards, TheJCSandes
TheJCSandes 2 years ago
@JCSandes, Wunderlich did not record this duet. I was comparing voices only. I know when we compare, we judge, we make criticism, and this is not fair to tenors. How can I forget Gedda, Pavarotti, Caruso (I never had a good record of Caruso, he may be the greatest, who knows?), Beniamino Gigli, Corelli and so many others? In certain arias no one beats Pavarotti, in others Wunderlich is superb in Wagner ( my respects to Lauritz Melchior here) and so on...
gauss2005 2 years ago
I agree wholeheartedly. They are all wonderful and individual, which is what makes music great. We all have a viewpoint and cannot really be said to be wrong. Just enjoy the variety of beauty being offered. And a question -- Wunderlich sang Wagner?!?! Isn't that rep. too big for him? I must listen to him again. (love his voice, along with Bjorling, Pavarotti, Kraus, Florez)

@sopranosd
Wunderlich sang Wagner, check this out on youtube searching:
Fritz Wunderlich & Gottlob Frick - Der Fliegende Hollander (Wagner)
Thanks
gauss2005 1 year ago
Wunderlich's early death was a huge loss, but I cannot say his voice competes with Bjorling. I don't think they would have sung the same rep., anyhow. Both wonderful singers, but I still think Kraus has it over both of them on this duet.

I've got to ask...
...if this comes in third, which two rate above it? (And purely out of interest now I'm asking you that... which two rate just below it too?)
They'd have to be "make your heart burst" kind of good to be better than this wonderful piece sung by these masters.

This might be the best male duet of any opera—simply amazing. Björling is one of the greatest singers of all time; Merrill does not disappoint either. I saw a performance of the Pearl Fishers from the San Diego Opera a couple years ago; this scene is just as powerful today as when I first experienced it live.
