I don't know why you're getting so many thumbs down ratings. You're working the muscles CORRECTLY, bro! When U did the bicep portion, you did it perfectly. I tell people u don't need to past the 90 degree mark, also. Your form was SLOW & you held it at the peak. 2% of people in the gym do that. No one holds the contraction...

    Go git 'em, Dan!

  • yes, the chick do dig ya Dan the SuperMan ;D lol

  • LOL this guy is funny

  • lol@ 1:05

  • Dan, I would love to see more weight training and workout videos as you are an expert in this area. It looks like you do circuit training which I just switched to and have gotten great results. You look like a vegan Macho Man Randy Savage!

  • @adc1222, derhausaholic, eulogy09, counterfeitsoda. It never ceases to amaze me how ppl like the aforementioned have nothing better to say about someone but negative crap! Those of you making such abrasive comments need to hit the gym and work off some of that anger, and hater-ade. Keep up the good work Dan. I will continue to check out your entertaining and informative videos. I gotcha back Dan. Much peace and harmony to you and yours:)

  • LMAO!!! got a few bigguns at your gym there buddy! HOTTTTTTTTT! lmao

  • Studies proving that Strength and size are related: Doug McGuff (M.D.), Mike Mentzer (Mr.Universe), John Little (renowned trainer), Arthur Jones (creator of Nautilus machines). These are just the popular and most influential people in the exercise science world. Before anyone judges me for my knowledge, research it for yourself. I am not a "kid" I'm nearly 24 years old. For all you know I have my own family. I'm taking more informative courses than a personal trainer does and I have experience.

  • Law of Specificity: You must Specifically train for something to improve upon it...if you want to be a better swimmer then swim, if you want to be a better golfer then golf, if you want to improve your push-up strength then do push-ups. I push-up and a bench press have different biomechanics and therefore can't be compared to each other. There are ppl who can bench 300-500 lbs but have difficulty doing push-ups...think about it...specific training...law of Specificity...Physiotherapists know!

  • Nautilus is a GREAT example of my point that size and strength aren't "all that related." Let me be clear, I agree size and strength are related. That is common sense. My statement meant that you can build one without the other relatively speaking.

You can get very strong on Nautilus equipment without building a lot of mass. Someone lifting lighter weight on free weights may end up building more muscle mass. I find this to be true for myself.

I have never given a thumbs down to you.

  • I never called you a kid. I said relative to me at age 42, you're a kid. I apologize for saying that. What I meant to say was that people your age tend to think they know everything and then as you get to be my age you realize you don't know anything. I wish I could make you understand, but you'll just have to live more life.

I never intended to get you angry or hurt your feelings. You started in on me when I was trying to encourage someone by telling me how wrong I was.

  • raw foods plus weights excellent !

  • I think I just realized what is going on. It's late and doesn't achilles have a test tomorrow or something? I think stress kicked in at some point. I had no idea what time it was. Good night.

  • Continued (respect):

I said, "Size and strength aren't all that related. If you just want a nice shape, you don't need much in regard to weights."

My intention was to encourage this guy. I still stand by what I said. Example: I got a nice chest and shoulders from pushups and could not bench 100 lbs even once.

You responded with, "...but you are completely wrong. I'm studying exercise physiology as a major I think I know."

Is that respectful or is it arrogant?

  • Love ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great comment. We all love Dan and whats her name? Oh yer Krista.

and we mostly love each other too.

    Its a beautifull world.

  • :) Thanks.

  • You are welcome

    Peace be with You

  • LOL! I love how people walking by have no idea they are on camera! :) Funny!

  • This is sounding more like an attack on Achilles now, for stating his knowledge. Being called a child is going to spark a response, because it is belittling him, making it sound as though he knows nothing. When in reality, he has spent countless hours researching the sport from many different valid sources, and is very knowledgeable on the subject. If you disagree then that is fine, however when the information he has critically analyzed repeatedly leads him to believe this.. then maybe you

  • (the reader) should open your mind to others suggestions. Don't just accept what you are told, think critically. He is not stating that with strength comes huge muscle gains, just that with strength, does come increased size even if very small. He has found through his studies that they are related, even if they are not noticeable muscle gains. No need to post comments picking at him like motoxbuddy has about spare time. Have your opinion and leave it alone. Just like in every aspect of life,

  • everybody doesn't always agree.

  • I think Motox was directing that more at me than achilles. Motox seems to get irritated that I'm so opinionated. :) Oh well I keep his life interesting.

  • no I wasn't and no I don't and yes you do :-)

  • I apologize for sounding like an attack on achilles. I made a comment intended to encourage someone that could not afford a gym membership and achilles felt the need to debate me. I'm open to debate but then he through his credentials to prove I was wrong. As you get older you learn to respect people older than you and understand that experience teaches you things a book cannot. You don't learn to appreciate this truth until your mid 30s.

Your boyfriend seems like a good guy.

  • I appreciate your apology, however; his comments have nothing to do with him disrespecting you as an elder, and age really should not be brought into the conversation to prove your statements. You really have no idea the extent of his experience or knowledge on the subject, and therefore; you can't state that simply your age and experiences places you superior to his. Intelligent discussion over such a topic should not be dismissed over extraneous factors such as age and experience to which both

  • parties are unaware of. The discussion was over the relationship between strength and muscle mass. 25 years of experience in health and fitness, and being 42 years old does not mean that you have authority over the answer. Even though you are apologizing you are still throwing in comments to irritate, such as saying "you learn to respect people older than you," and "you don't learn to appreciate this truth till your mid 30's." He was challenging your statement with intelligent conversation, to

  • which people seem to respond negatively. It saddens me that people are not open to debate on popular subjects. One of which is largely debated on this channel, (path to ultimate health and healing) where people with similar ideas come to receive valuable information.

  • And you are right. He is an amazing guy. It is a shame all of you on this channel who have given thumbs down to him, are not more open. Your negativity will not be accepted by us. From this... we have learned, do not interact with people on here, because someone is always going to try to bring you down.

  • "From this... we have learned, do not interact with people on here, because someone is always going to try to bring you down."

Hi RawBeauty4Life, I hope you can forgive everyone, as that is not such a cool lesson that you stated to have learned. I hope you can forgive & wipe the slate clean. Everyone here means well. The majority of communication is nonverbal, which makes effective communication through words on a computer screen very difficult. As I already stated, we are all on the same team.

  • I do not feel I am superior to him or smarter than him or have more answers than him. What I do know is that I was his age once and when I was his age I thought I had all the answers. I have a college degree too. In fact I was in the top 10% of my university but life has a way of humbling a person.

If you look at how this got started I was talking to someone else. He came at me stating I was wrong. He didn't say I see your point, but... He said I study this. I am right, you are wrong.

  • go go go DAN WITH THE MASTER PLAN , WE CAN DO THIS , YES , YES , YES ! ! !

  • Achilles and Green , you guys have got too much time on your hands.

All we need now is ACE and Screenflicker to jump in.

  • or milokito!!!

  • Yer , sorry forgot about milokito.

  • For the most part cool vid's come on dude. You must really love to look @ yourself. I not really sure what the point of that was but can we see more forest/green walking/hill climbing shit then you using the camera as a mirror.

  • Dan, clearly you're the man. You talk the talk and walk the walk. You're eating, exercising, growing, living, teaching success, even from errors. All of these for the body, mind, energy, and soul while allowing all to witness. Thus, I see you reaching other planes of reality/truths which are limitless. The motivational factor.

    God bless

  • Thanks, Dan. You rock!

  • you don't need anything but free weights. not only that, but you only need a few exercises to gain real mass, over the whole body. All you need is squats, flat bench presses, standing shoulder presses, pull ups, push ups, dips, rows, dead lifts, and planks. that's it. not machinery. nothing but real dead weight, on a barbell. do those in a 5x5 workout structure. (ripptoe workout) with a raw diet, you'll gain more muscle in 6 months than claimed scientifically possible.

  • not sure what all the comments are about, but i've been working out for over 20 years myself (off and on). it's really not rocket science. go heavy, and you should build some muscle mass if you eat right too. go lighter for defination. his form is decent, but he should go a little slower on the negative part (letting the weights fall so to speak). no, you shouldn't swing the weights or just let them fall either. it should be a slow, controlled movement (faster with lighter weights).

  • One other note: I noticed Dan getting some criticism on technique. Truthfully, form means very little except you should use form and weight that prevents injury.

Watch Ronnie Coleman lift - there are videos on YouTube. The guy swings every rep. His form is disgusting. I don't recommend swinging heavy weights as it will likely cause injury.

Unless you're hard core, just worry about getting to the gym every day and not getting injured and stop complicating it.

  • lol that is true, I agree 100%. Mark Dugdale is usually pretty good though.

  • Achilles, add me as a friend. I'm going to put some videos of me up (before & after) soon but on a new channel I will message my friends about. I'm starting working out tomorrow and I filmed my before video tonight.

My chest is fairly developed for my frame and it isn't any bigger now than when I only did pushups. I had a friend growing up that only climbed a rope attached to the tree in his backyard. He had a huge back and arms. He never lifted weights.

Look at gymnasts, they don't lift.

  • or ballet dancers! and the males do lift...the females... ;)

  • Good point. What I meant to say was they don't lift weights. They use body weight. You can build a lot of muscle mass using body weight. Unless Hershel Walker lies, he only did pushups, sit ups and chin ups and he had an amazing physique. I doubt he was very strong for his size relative to say a power lifter of the same body weight.

Again, resistance exercise using body weight is plenty for building a nice body.

  • Achilles, maybe it will help if I agree with you that to make big gains in muscle size you need to train heavy and consume enough calories. If that's your point, I'll agree with you. I'll also agree that if you train heavy you're going to eventually put on size if you're consuming enough calories.

My initial point was only intended to encourage the guy that only has dumbbells to work with. He can build good muscularity. I built a fairly massive chest with only pushups when I was a teen.

  • Second type of hypertrophy:

During myofibrillar hypertrophy, the myofibrils, being the actin and myosin contractile proteins, increase in number and add to muscular strength as well as a small increase in the size of the muscle.

Both types make it very clear that muscle size is not bound to muscle strength so thank you for using your own terminology to prove my point.

Yes, to some extent size is obviously related to strength, you can be one without the other to some extent.

  • Dan, I see that your not eating raw cacao and goji berries on your show. What's your take on those foods?

  • Also, do you mind sharing how much you were lifting for each exercise? It would be cool to see and document your lifting progress throughout time - like what you are building up to and the rate you are doing it. I'd also love to know what your pre and post raw meals are prior to working out. Dan you are so inspiring. I see your healing happening as a WHOLE. Thank you for sharing this with us. Ps. I must send my Mom this one, she's going to flip... sending it now... smile

  • Dan The HE MAN! Looking great Dan, your muscles have sculpted themselves so well. Keep breathing deep during those workouts. This video made me chuckle, I can't help but chuckle because I grew up with 2 body building parents and my earliest memories are the whole gym scene... and all the Muscle and Fitness mags around the house, Dad's protein powder distribution, etc. Great confidence, I love the looks you give yourself when you check out how all your hard work has paid off. Body beautiful!

  • haha, look at that girl eyeing you up at 2:26

  • hahahahha when that girl was checkin you out you waved at her with your eyebrows

  • Did someone say Narcissistic ?

    HaHa

  • Drowning in the lake of Dan !!! Haha ... I like this guy unfortunately reminds me of myself a lot ... my line is she wants a slice

  • Haha, same here.

What you didn't know is that that girls glance was a $20 deal.

Haha .Wonder how many thumbs down I will get for that?

    Lighten up folks.

  • Next level: Competition. Do it for us man!!!

  • 25 years of experience is worth just as much as your degree, I assure you.

  • Achilles, an example of what I am saying: In college I weighed 190 and never benched over 225 for even one rep and I trained very heavy and often. A few years later I got serious about strength again. I started with a one rep max of 205. In 8 weeks I was benching 270. I did negatives once a week with about 30 lbs over whatever my max was that day. I did 2 sets of 2 to 3 negatives. That's the only thing I changed. It had nothing to do with muscle mass, just the strength of the fibers.

  • If you think I could build much muscle mass in 8 weeks, heck no. It is not physically possible. In fact during that 8 weeks I lost body weight. I went 45 lbs over the max that I had ever lifted in my life. I weighed 165 lbs at the time, well below the 190 I weighed when I couldn't break 225. I stopped working out or I would have well exceeded 270. I gained at least 5 lbs on my bench max every single week.

Obviously mass and strength have a relation. That is physics. Anyway... whatever

  • Muscle strength almost always increases before muscle hypertrophy. NO ONE can build much muscle mass in 8 weeks unless they are a noob or on the juice...you are right it's not physically possible and that is why hypertrophy is ALWAYS a slow but gradual process. The only way you won't grow much muscle is if you have a poor diet. You don't grow bigger and get weaker. The example you provided of your college days proves that once your fibers strengthened they grew.

  • Achillesreborn, I'm a 42 year old man. You're relatively still a kid. I have been in health and fitness for over 25 years. I've tried it all except steroids.

You may know terminology I don't like hypertrophy which I looked up, but you're so convinced you're right that you're going to close your mind to growth.

During sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, the volume of sarcoplasmic fluid in the muscle cell increases with no accompanying increase in muscular strength.

Sounds like I was right to me.

  • lol you'd be amazed at what I know for only being a "kid." I find the term funny no matter who uses it because I will always be referred to as a kid by those who are chronologically older than I. Age has little relevance compared to where/whom the information is coming from. I have 6 years of fitness experience as far as weights are concerned but I've been active in sports since I was 4 years old...so I guess I have 20 years health and fitness experience...

  • I realize that what is taught in universities is mostly BS but in today's world we need credentials. The reason I began my degree in Human Kinetics was because of my fascination with bodybuilding. I had already done (and still do) lots of my own research into exercise science because I am a critical thinker and enjoy challenging tradition and conventional ways. I hope I haven't offended you at all. Also, I know I don't know everything but there is a limit per post so I have to be to the point.

  • Okay... you don't grow bigger and get weaker. Agreed at face value, but...

In high school I started by doing pushups. After about two years my chest was huge. Every time I took off my shirt someone would say something about it. I eventually started benching. I couldn't bench over 100 lbs at first. My chest was bigger than my friend that benched 200.

Did I get stronger as my chest grew? I must have? I could do more pushups without stopping but was I stronger for one rep? Not sure.

  • Dude I think this convo is over, you say you know so much about fitness and bodybuilding yet you seem to know nothing about the law of Specificity. I can see now after rereading some of your comments that you are extremely offended and downright threatened by my knowledge and age...I don't care how many thumbs down I get that's pathetic. I didn't disrespect you in anyway and was actually trying to be quite polite until you brought in the age factor. "oh my little boy, I'm far wiser and greater."

  • Can everyone please kiss and make up? We are all on the same team here, remember? The healthy team. I'm not going to bother detailing the ways in which each person was "right" or "wrong," as it is completely besides the point. We are all equals here. We don't need to get hot and bothered. Again, especially since we are on the same team here. Can everyone please walk away from this with no judgments about one another? Can the slate be wiped clean? Everyone here means well. Right?

  • Oh just enjoy it. It adds to your view count. The more comments videos get the better :)

I'm always open to debate. I sure don't want to run anyone off, but me having a debate should have nothing to do with how someone feels about this channel, or YouTube, in general.

  • To throw in a little twist, I wanted to share something I read recently that fascinates me:

Subjects who visualized themselves going through a specific strength workout gained nearly as much strength as those who actually did it (24% vs. 28%), per a report in the North American Journal of Psychology.

  • I've read this study before. It is amazing it has to do with your CNS but you have to actually believe you are lifting the weights in your mind.

  • just like with the law of attraction! pretty cool. I believe I can fly....

  • Okay, I made the "still a kid relative" comment due to you being quite arrogant toward me. I was your age once. At your age, you think you can conquer the world and you're all knowing. You won't understand where I'm coming from until you're my age. I have never felt anger toward you. I'm fine debating like we have. You think I am threatened by your knowledge and age? You are grossly mistaken. I think you seem like a cool guy. I hope you succeed in all your goals. To be continued...

  • sup dan, got any pics of when you were a meat eater/bodybuilder? just curious

  • bigger.better.faster.stronger.

  • 2:26 yea that girl was totally checking u out lolz

  • DAMN BRO IM LOVIN THESE MUSCLES i'm bout to go to the gym in a lil while too, thanks for inspiring me!!

  • You Go Dan! :)

  • cool cool ur ripped

  • Good job Dan. Is that L A Fitness Center?

  • YMCA in Monroe, WA

  • Thats a YMCA?Man thats interesting.

  • I can dig it, Dan!

  • Ha Ha.. Nice. You are so cute Dan

  • Dan, that was very funny :)

  • Look like he has abs too me.... Keep up the good work bro!!!!

  • your biceps are awesome. i'm so jealous lol

  • the best body ever !!, add me on facebook u bum!

im a skinny girl ( to their standards) but im stronger than most

  • " The little chics dig me dont they!" Dan you are so silly :-) Love the vid- thanks brother

  • had to stop some routines at the gym because of rotater cuff injury and have been slow to get back at it after physio but don't want to give up as I found it was really helping me. Can't really press much now, do flys etc. Need some help to get back into it. any ideas?

  • Do what you can! Go slow and steady! You will keep on getting more healed over time.

  • Flex at the end was worth waiting for ;-)

  • how could have such strengh and being so skinny!? :O

  • Haha, I love the ending.

  • yeah that chick at 2:25 was diggin' you.

i cant afford gym membership, all i got is dumbbells. :(

  • All you need are dumbbells. If you had a bench and straight bar for chest that would help too. You can get some very nice weights cheap on Craigslist these days. Most of my chest development came from pushups. I didn't get strong until I used flat bench, but I built plenty of muscle with just pushups. Size and strength aren't all that related. If you just want a nice shape, you don't need much in regard to weights.

  • Are you the guy that gave me a thumbs down? I can bench more than people that weigh twice as much as I do. Obviously mass is related to force, but I have known guys in the gym that weighed were like 5'11 and 160 and benched 300. You can get strong without size and you can put on size without getting as strong relative to body weight.

You're welcome to debate this and have your opinion but don't thumbs down me as if I said something wrong.

  • I didn't thumbs down you lol...but you are completely wrong. I'm studying exercise physiology as a major I think I know. Your strength relative to others in the gym means little to nothing when you compare it to others. It is all dependent on genetics, diet, muscle/tendon attachments, etc. I'm a small guys in my gym and yet I lift some of the heaviest weights as well. (remember...a person who has longer limbs will lift less in a bench press because he has a longer ROM, so really he's stronger!

  • Okay sorry for assuming the thumbs down was from you. Be very careful about believing everything you read. Many people who majored in fitness and nutrition later realized they had to work hard to wipe their mind of the bs they learned in school and start over.

Some of the strongest guys in the gym I have seen on bench have long arms. Sure there is some truth to everything you have said, but how you train is more important than how any of what you said.

  • Hi Achilles, if size and strength are "completely related," how is it that Dan has lost 40 pounds of muscle since his bodybuilding days, but today he is just as strong, if not stronger? I'm only just wondering here...I'm not picking sides as there are no sides! I know nothing!!!!

(I just verified the facts I stated about Dan, btw)

  • I'm a little confused...not trying to be negative at all but in one of Dan's vids from the summer he said he wasn't lifting as heavy anymore (more notably the deadlift). If he is stronger that would be natural strength as he has said himself that he used to take steroids. As soon as anyone comes off of a cycle they will lose muscle regardless of how they eat or train. I have never used steroids so I don't know how much one can lose but they tend to cause the body to retain water when on them.

  • Muscle is about 72% water... as for Motoxbuddy I don't have much time on my hands at all. I've been studying all day for an anatomy exam and keep getting questions in my inbox (email) from youtube. I answer when I'm taking a break. Unfortunately no studies I'm aware of have been conducted on exercise and the effects from a raw diet compared to a SAD with steroids.

  • Achilles Dan is the study. His done both raw and steroids. What do you think is going on?

Also I my other post was totally tongue in cheek - for a laugh at you guys bumping out post after post and not seeing the other point of view.

  • What he meant by that comment was that previously he lifted TOO heavy and pushed himself too hard, and so caused himself physical harm (some of which he is still recovering from).

  • Achilles and green are both right and wrong .I see both their points and they are good points but both incomplete. There is one factor that hasn't been discussed here and never is but can prove and disprove both arguements.

  • i hear you

  • i think though that she was just trying to see what was going on with this silly man his camera and his shirt

  • you can get a good deal on gym memberships if you keep your eyes open (also depends on where you are i guess). i got a great deal on 24hourfitness through costco. $12.50 a month (and no, i'm not a salesman for them :). a lot of gyms reduced their fees right now because of recessesion. talk to em and see if they will give you a good rate

  • fuck that was a stupid remark

  • He is thin and lean, but I think skinny would be someone with no muscle mass. It has been proven in several studies that the less calories one consumes, the longer he/she will likely live. People eat too much these days. Additionally, there are more trolls today than in the olden days of the 1900s.

I guess you're into bodybuilding, cool. Dan used to be too. I have followed the sport off and on since about '83. Guys like Dorian Yates and Ronnie Coleman ruined it for me.

  • Same here green .Lee Haney was the last one for me.

  • 2:24 ;)

  • i like macadamia nuts

  • i noticed the chick checking you out, lmao and damn you are in good shape dude.

  • It's 7 a.m. and I have not worked out yet. Thabks for making me feel guilty. LOL

Now I know why you look like Tarzan in that apple tree. 5stars
