I think these events are an expression of how pissed off all of us are about the MPs expenses scandal and the bankers ruining our economy but getting off scott free. This anger has filtered down to the underclass and they have expressed it in the only way they know how, with violence and criminality. I actually predicted this a year ago, and my friends thought I was nuts. You have expressed our confusion and consternation very well.
I'm as confused as you are. Some of the looters were university students and people with jobs and prospects. I can understand the anger of young people from poor backgrounds who get ground down in our society, but people with Blackberrys? Mark Duggan had a loaded gun although he never fired it. Our armed police would shoot him if they thought he was reaching for it, so we must wait for the enquiry to make a judgement on that. Cameron has no clue what he is talking about.
Pretty much summing up what I think here. Peaceful protest was good and then somehow got hijacked by people and turned into a riot. That's bad enough, but repeated riots breaking out elsewhere was just selfish opportunism. People who are blaming the conservatives for this are really just overlooking the facts, the most prominent of which is that the majority of people hit by the cuts didn't go out and steal/burn their communities.
I once tried to, um, "wipe my bum" with money, not that I'm rich or anything but I just wanted to try. I wouldn't recommend it. It was only a 1 dollar bill after all. If I ever have a few extra 100 dollar bills just laying around (within reach) I may try it again. That was probably why I didn't like it the first time. It didn't cost enough.
