They had everything in 1980. They did not repair it. They took further 5 billion USD in loans and still did not maintain and did not repair it. What makes you think that several billions more in loans or aid will change anything? You have to realise that the true reasons to their plight are inside them, in their complacency and acceptance of these conditions. I will rather donate to Chinese peasants rebuilding their homes after earthquake - two days after the disaster they already making bricks.

When I left The Rhodesian Armed Forces for The British Armed Forces in 1980, you could see the hand writing on the wall for Zimbabwe and 29 years later it has all come true. It may not excuse Europeans completely, but there was nothing uniquely vicious in their actions. When Europeans came to Africa, slavery already existed; they just joined the process and, as usual, did it better than the others.

While I wouldn't make any such crazy claims, I would say that the Catholic church is mostly responsible for the continued spread of AIDS in Africa. Much of African countries were colonized by Catholic European countries, and the continued denouncement of birth control by the Pope has resulted in continuing cases of HIV. Abstinence? Who do the clergy think they're kidding?
