Es gibt kaum jemanden, der nicht schon mal eine Träne bei diesem Lied vergossen hat. Die ERinnerung ist dabei nicht ausschlaggebend sondern einfach nur die Melodie. Es wird eine der schönsten Stellen des Rheines besungen.

I'm pretty sure this is from "german university songs" --five cd's of Erich Kunz and the Vienna state orchestra and chorus, conducted by Anton Paulik.The bulk of these cd's are still available (piecemeal) ---just google in the details. I can assure you, if you can afford them, you certainly won't regret the expense.

my German Au Pair always used to say "Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,

Daß ich so traurig bin" when something wasn't going right. I never knew where it came from until now. It's a powerful little song. :)

this song reminds me of my first trip to Germany in 1953, when I was a stagiaire student at the Collieries of Lorraine, and one of the first love kisses I ever received by a girl, while we were on a boat sailing down the Rhine. I can't stop a tear when I listen to it.

Juntos cantamos La Nochera que nos acordamos de hace mas de medio siglo cuando eramos niños en Argentina. La musica "de fondo" era La Serenata de Schubert. My grandmother sang this to me many years ago, and myself now a granma tried to remember the words to share with my grandaughter. What a beatiful sound this was. A memory of many days past.

@torrohnm When I was a young woman, I worked in a nursing home in Berlin. It was so sweet to hear the old people sing these wonderful songs. I knew a few of them in English, like Zwei Herzen in Drei-Viertel Zeit, and Wien, du Stadt meiner Träume, they would just beam, that an American would know these songs. My grandmother was Austrian and grandfather German. I loved working with old folks -- no one is so appreciative of kindness and respect.
